Huron Street Kittens Update: Jerzy!

A number of people have asked me about the kittens that were found dumped next to a bunch of garbage cans last month by a very good Samaritan named Sarita. There were initially four, two being one week old and the other two being approximately four weeks old. The two younger ones regrettably— but not surprisingly— died. This left a brother and sister which we named Anna and Jerzy. In regards to them I have some good news and some bad news: Anna has died. Lisa has no idea what happened. She simply woke up one morning and Anna was gone. If there is any consolation about this sad passing of events it is:
- At least Anna spent what little time she had being loved and cared for as instead simply dying on the street like so many stray/abandoned kittens do.
- Her brother Jerzy is happy and healthy. He has tested negative for feline leukemia and FIV!
Here’s Jerzy the day he was found: April 13, 2010.
And here he is after a very exhausting “play session” at Muddy Paws yesterday!
Lisacat writes: …He is so damned cute right now. Super feisty, eating great, eyes cleared up, good poops, etc. I’ll test him for felv/fiv before Sunday, I think he’s going to be amazing!
But don’t take her word for it. Here is Jerzy having a grand old time!
In closing I would like to thank everyone once again for their generous donations towards Jerzy’s medical care. It took several weeks of antibiotics and TLC but as you can see it was money well spent. I agree with Lisa: he is going to be a very remarkable guy!

This flier comes courtesy of my buddy Diana, who writes:
Hi Heather,
I spotted this on Calyer near Guernsey and thought you might want to post it, he looks like a sweet cat and his owners seem heartbroken.
If you have seen Sunny or know of his whereabouts please contact his “people” at the above-listed telephone number. He is clearly missed!

Okay.
I am not now a mother nor do I ever care to become one. Whatever genetic predilection towards child-bearing I was to receive at birth I never got. While some women fret over their under-sized breasts and see fit to “augment” them, I rejoice having AA cups because they do not interfere with my use of power tools. I was supposed to be a woman. Instead I became a cat lady.
Which brings me to today’s Mother’s Day post. It is about a kitten named Rozza.
Lisacat writes on May 7, 2010:
Rozza was rescued in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. A woman was walking a friend’s dog and noticed the dog was carrying something in his mouth. She thought it was a rat, but it turned out to be a tiny kitten less than a week old. His eyes were still closed and he was listless and filthy. The woman rushed him to the vet who told her to get a bottle and formula and try to feed him. When she went to Muddy Paws for supplies, Robin referred her to me. I took him in and have cleaned him up, removing the fly eggs from two wounds that could be bites, but more likely some other kind of injury. Note that the vet did nothing to clean him or even notice the open wounds! Rozza is in bad shape, not nursing and very weak. He is taking formula a drop at a time. I’m flushing the holes and giving him fluids and antibiotics.
Yesterday Rozza was nursing with gusto!
With a little encouragement from Ma Gandolf— the dog!
Drunk on formula and love.
Sleeping.
Mothers come in all stripes. Occasionally they come with whiskers and tails.
Happy Mother’s Day!

New York Shitty Video Du Jour: Meeting Nemo & More About The Huron Street Kittens
Filed under: 11211, 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, East Williamsburg, East Williamsburg Brooklyn, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
As I mentioned last week, a couple of my favorite north Brooklyn cat ladies (including the woman who is taking care of the Huron Street kittens) conducted an adoption event at Muddy Paws yesterday. I made it clear I planned to swing by. My purpose for doing so was twofold:
- The get the latest news on the Huron Street kittens
- To meet Nemo
I am pleased to report that the Huron Street Kittens are faring well! Lisa is still treating their eye infections (which is understandable) but they are eating on their own and, despite their humble and less than auspicious entrance in this world, are proving to be gourmands. They are thumbing their respective and very cute noses at dry food (which is less expensive), but are consuming wet food with gusto. Lisa also told me that after initially being leery of human contact (can you blame them?) they are learning to trust her. I for one think this is a terrific development. When the time and opportunity affords Lisa has promised me more pictures of these little ones. You can rest assured I will post them on New York Shitty.
As for point #2: yesterday afternoon I— at long last— made the acquaintance of another Greenpoint cutie. Nemo.
This winsome (and very inquisitive) guy hails from Russell Street and for reasons that are unclear became separated from his mother and litter mates at the tender age of one week. That is when he found his way into Lisa’s care. He has proven to be quite the early-adopter: not only is he eating wet food at four weeks but is also a stone cold killer. At least inasmuch as a two pound kitten can be as you will see. Enjoy!
Anyone interested in giving this amazing little guy a home should contact his foster/bottle mom Lisa at: lisavallez (at) gmail (dot) com. NOTE/CAVEAT: there is an adoption fee and application process. Landlord approval is mandatory.

P.S.: As for the identity of the good Samaritan who stepped forward and took the Huron Street kittens home. I met her last week. She is a truly amazing woman— could you possibly expect anything less? Her are a few facts about her:
- She was born and raised in San Francisco.
- She has lived in Greenpoint for one month (who says all noobs don’t care!). Prior to that she lived in Harlem.
- She likes Sidecars and Old Fashioneds. This impressed the Mister TREMENDOUSLY.
- She is a dancer who has worked in performance pieces by the renowned artist Mike Kelley.
- She is a yoga teacher at Greenpoint’s very own Good Yoga.
- She recently had a birthday.
The latter most became the object of some suspicion to her manager when she failed to arrive to work on time that fateful day. Her boss lady, Flannery, writes:
…She was on her way to teach a 7 am meditation class when I received a text telling me she was going to be late because she found some kittens in the road.
I’m embarrassed to say that it did occur to me that perhaps she was just running late and feeding me a line that she thought I might swallow with greater ease than “I’m late because I overslept after my birthday weekend bacchanal,” but either way I didn’t mind. No harm, no foul. We’ve all been there. But when she came to class and told us the story of kitten saving, and later that night at her dance class when she told us about the loss of one of the kittens, it was clear that she really was the right girl in the right place and the right time.We hear about people’s misdeeds so often, that I hope you might take a moment to highlight her beautiful act…
Done! Without further ado here is our mystery woman. If any of you happen see her during your Greenpoint ramblings, dear readers, please welcome Sarita to the neighborhood. She’s a keeper!
