Presenting The Heckscher Community Garden

As I mentioned yesterday East Williamsburg sports a number of community gardens. The crown jewel of them all is easily the Heckscher Community Garden on Scholes Street. When I walked by yesterday they were busy at work mowing and culitivating, so I went in to take a peek.

The work these people have done is really impressive.

This little grotto makes you almost forget you are in the city.

Here are the volunteers hard at work. The woman manning the lawn mower is a Greenpointer!

And what would a garden be without a gnome to preside over it?

Those of you who are looking for something free to do tonight might be interested to know they will be showing Step It Up 2 this evening. Yeah, the movie sounds kind of crappy but at least you will enjoy it (or not) while luxuriating in one damned nice park. The show starts at 8:00 p.m., so pack your lawn chair, fill up the cooler and head on down to 136 Scholes Street! It’s absolutely free!
