Another Halloween Party: Palace Cafe

Palace Cafe

This one was brought to my attention by a reader named Sherry. She writes:

I… wanted to let you know there’s an adults-only Halloween costume party at the Park Palace Café (Nassau and Russell), known as Goodman’s for some reason to my family, on October 27. I might drop by uncostumed to see how hipsterized what I remember as a working-class bar has become.

I walked by this very establishment yesterday and it does look pretty hipsterized. Inasmuch as it is possible (McGolrick Park is homeless person H.Q.) , anyway. Here are the deets about the party:

WHAT: Halloween Costume Bash and Art Party

WHERE: The Palace Cafe, Nassau Avenue at Russell Street

WHEN: Saturday, October 27, dusk until closing

There will be a prize for best costume and art work by Lenka Curtain is to be featured.

So there have you! Yet another Halloween party to choose from on this upcoming Halloween(ish) weekend!

Miss Heather

  2. If by “hipsterized” you mean, staying the same for the last 20 years then yes, this place has been “hipsterized”. It has been a few months since the last time I grabbed a beer there, but last time I did I was fortunate enough to recieve a bit of a history lesson about the place. It has been in the same family for 3 generations, the current owner can often be found tending bar, and his grandmother can also often be found seated at a table there. You won’t however find her sitting at the bar. She told me that even though women are currently allowed in the front room/bar area, it wasn’t always that way, the ERA didn’t apply there until the early 80s(if I remember her words correctly). Even though she & former husband owned the place, she still to this day, does not feel comfotable sitting at the bar.

  4. I have to agree that I find it unlikely that Goodman’s is too ‘hipsterized’. My friends mother hangs out in there! And last time I was there it was chock full of locals, but there was also a few fresh faces, too. The “Art Party” tagged on the end of this Halloween Bash may indicate they’re trying to court some more.

  6. I was being mildly facetious when I wrote about this place being hipsterized. Clearly I failed to convey this.

Truth be told, what I could see happening to this establishment is what happened to Tommy’s Tavern in 2005: seemingly overnight it changed from being a dive whose patrons licked the windows when I walked by to a fauxhawk ridden hell hole. Thankfully, things seem to have balanced out a little: some nights the locals hang out there, other nights it is hipster hell.

    Ditto.
