NEXT WEEK: A Ribbon Cutting With Mayor Mike!
Some of you probably know ground has been broken for the new soccer field which will grace Bushwick Inlet Park. What you probably do not know is (per a most curious anonymous source) I have been told there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony with none other than our fair Mayor as well as “other elected officials and Commissioner Benepe” this upcoming Monday, July 6, 2009! The festivities will kick off at either 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. (I am awaiting confirmation for all of this— if/when I get a firm time and date I will post them here.) Let’s celebrate!

Some of you may or may know that this morning John Liu, who is running against David Yassky for City Comptroller, was on Bedford Avenue meeting and greeting morning commuters. Well, Mr. Yassky decided he too should canvass this thoroughfare (being as it IS in his City Council district) and invited a handful of his buddies to join him. The reception he received was chilly to say the least:
David: Hi, my name is David Yassky and I’m running for City Comptroller.Woman: Did you vote for a 3rd term?David: No, I’m not running for a 3rd term.Woman: But you voted to extend term limits.David: Yes, I did…Woman: It’s a terrible idea…David: Well, I disagree with you…Woman: …and I hope it comes back to haunt you.David: Shrugs meekly. New York Shitty Day Ender: Karl Gets A Pair
(…And Then Some!)
On June 29, 2009 my buddy Kevin of Forgotten NY wrote in his latest “slice” entitled The Four Corners of North 4th:
This new condo on the NW corner of Driggs Avenue and N. 4th is Nforth by archiect Karl Fischer, who has worked extensively in Montreal and NYC. He has perpetrated a traves … er, muscled the old LIRR/Pennsy Powerhouse in Hunters Point into residential units and has also designed Schaefer Landing on the site of the old Schaefer brewery on Kent Avenue.
I actually like the building — it features very large windows — a trend in residential architecture — and a throwback look with actual brickface…
I have to respectfully disagree with my colleague: this building, along with its numerous (and seemingly exponentially proliferating) siblings is simply awful. What’s more, I learned today I am not the only one who harbors this sentiment.
At a casual glance I counted at least twenty penises (penii?) gracing this edifice. Whoever was responsible for this amusing (and it should be noted, NON-permanent) act of vandalism didn’t stop at NForth either: the Karl Fischer next door got four of its own.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: An Ugly Incident At Bedford Avenue

A number of you, dear readers, have brought this story to my attention. For those of you who are not in the know, a rather ugly arrest recently came to pass at the Bedford Avenue stop of the L train involving— get this— a PUG. Although there is certainly more to the story than what has come to light, I strongly encourage each and every one you to read Gothamist’s coverage (they have since added some photographs of the incident, such as the one to the left, which was taken by Jason Wagner). One word: DISGUSTING.

North Brooklyn’s Newest Park!

An area I am particularly fond of knocking around in East Williamsburg is the Grand Street stop of the L. This isn’t because it is particularly nice (it isn’t). Rather, I find the industrial and residential patchwork of this community fascinating. I never know what I’ll find. This was especially true of my last trip down Grand Street. It was at 910 (just east of Bushwick Avenue) where I found the following.
Hmm, this must be some of that affordable housing I have heard so much about?
I thought to myself.
It isn’t.
It’s a park.
And a pretty nice one at that!
There was nary a dog turd, drunken horde of rowdy teens or trace of corporate sponsorship to be found. In regards to the latter most, maybe there should be? A number of you, dear readers, are probably aware that the Parks Department is in dire financial straits nowadays. This is one of the reasons why they’re trying to sell the naming rights to the McCarren Park Pool. Some of my fellow citizens have cried foul over this. I say the Parks Department is not going far enough.
I would like to humbly recommend that our fair city enlist some corporate sponsors partners to build a dozen of these bad boys and station them around north Brooklyn. Hell, the Transmitter Park site is available and 65 Commercial Street, being a parking lot, would be ideally suited for one or two of these portable oases. The possibilities for directly advertising services of special interest to the residents of 11222, 11211 and 11206 are endless! 1-888-bunion-1, bedbug extermination services and of course my good friend Hongo Killer immediately come to mind.

Any information on the shooting that happened last night around 11:30ish at the St. Cono di Teggiano Club at 231 Ainslie St? I was watching a movie in an apartment nearby when I heard something that sounded like a gun shot, followed by a large crowd, several officers, two ambulances, and a some crime scene tape. I didn’t go out to find out what was going on for fear of my own life…

TOMORROW: Brooklyn Record Riot
Although I am not a LP enthusiast, I know many people reading this blog are. Therefore, I feel compelled bring it to their attention that tomorrow, yes June 28, the Brooklyn Record Riot will be in effect at the Garden Spot’s very own Warsaw. General admission starts at noon, runs until 8:00 p.m. and will only set you back a paltry $3.00. The more dedicated collectors among you can gain early entry at 10:00 a.m. for $20.00. LPs, 45s, EPs, and “”collectibles in genres ranging from soul, rock, jazz, country and dance are promised. The “dollar room” will be making its triumphant return as well. If you happen to be a north Brooklynite and vinyl is your thing, tomorrow’s your big day!
