An East Willie PSA: No Mops Down The Toilet, Please!
Filed under: 11206, East Williamsburg, East Williamsburg Brooklyn, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn
This takes me back to the first apartment I ever inhabited. One evening, far longer ago than I care to recall, some friends I were celebrating a birthday. My kitchen sink inexplicably backed-up. A bunch of black gooey stuff came up. We panicked. While they did the best they could to stave off deluge of murk I called the landlord.
He arrived and suction-pumped the sink. Up came a couple of popsicle sticks and the remnants of a dead snake. Methinks it was a rattler, but its state of decomposition rendered it too difficult to determine with any certainty. Mine is(and was) an educated guess. The landlord glared at me and admonished me NOT to place such items in his plumbing. Despite my protestations that I was (and still am) a vegetarian and therefore would have no reason to have a snake in my sink— much less a dismembered one at that— he remained unconvinced.
The previous anecdote having been shared— and the horrific grammar and spelling of this missive taken into account— here’s what I want to know:
- What the hell are “whipes”?
- How does one flush a mop down a toilet?
- Why would someone see fit to flush a mop down a toilet?
I guess there’s a first time for everything.

Today’s Bit o’ Bloomblight: 11 Orient Avenue
Today I woke up in a rotten mood. This is not necessarily unheard of this time of year; there’s something about the short days and long cold nights I find unsettling. Wishing to be alone, I decided to go for a walk. My logic for doing so was as follows: I would probably find an object for my anger. I did.
This is the sight which awaited me when I rounded the corner from Metropolitan Avenue onto Orient Avenue. The address is 11 Orient Avenue. For those of you who are wondering, here’s what this property looked like in May 2008.
While hardly easy on the eyes, it is better than the following.
A colossal pile of dirt and rubbish.
As it would happen I encountered a very kindly old lady walking by this delightful sight. I asked her what happened. She was unable to pinpoint an exact date, but told me it happened last week when the winds were particularly strong. The fence simply collapsed. As you can see, this lot is now open for any and all to exploit as they see fit. Currently it appears to be a garbage disposal area. I have little doubt it will be inhabited in the near future. Albeit not by tenants of a more affluent persuasion, who were undoubtedly was the demographic the developer and Robert Scarano, architect, had in mind when these plans were filed in 2007. So it goes.
I have written this before and I will write it again:
I strongly believe people respond to the environment around them. This is why I am a big fan of public art especially in our subway system. Gestures as grand as a mosaic or as simple as keeping public facilities neat and clean send a positive message. The vigilance (or this case, lack thereof) with which our municipal government enforces the laws put in place to preserve our, the citizenry’s, quality of life speaks volumes about their attitude as public servants.
This is unacceptable. No one should have to live with this.

Jim (who sent me the image to the left) writes:
We have a stray cat who has meandered her way into our(5 dudes in a loft) hearts…… She appeared over the summer looking for our inside cat-acknowledging us only with a vicious hiss and running away. A little love and affection later, she now lets us pick her up, purrs on our laps, makes us go “Aaaaawwwww”……
We want to bring her in, but need to get her fixed, get her shots, etc. Wondering if you have a place in the GP area where we could bring her to get that done at a reasonable price? The ASPCA van isn’t coming around this area too soon. Much appreciated and i love the blog-your the best!
If there’s one thing yours truly has a soft spot for it is men who like cats— and who couldn’t help but love this adorable lass? Here are a few thoughts off the top of my head:
- I recall the Toby Project occasionally provides affordable spay and neuter services in Brooklyn. I have checked their calendar and the next time they will be remotely near Greenpoint is January 27. On this day they will be in Bedford Stuyvesant.
- Speaking for myself, my husband and I go to Northside Veterinary Clinic. I’ll be upfront: people tend to either really like Drs. Leiman and Eisner or can’t stand them. We have had positive experiences with them. I would also like to add that I recently accompanied a friend of mine who had rescued a kitten there for a “check up”. She was very happy and Dr. Eisner, knowing that “Peanut” was a rescue, gave her a 20% discount off the cost of all the tests, etc. I am certain it was still not very cheap, but the cost split five ways might be do-able for youse guys.
On that note, I am going to solicit thoughts/advice from my readers. If you have any advice for Jim please leave them in the comments. Thanks!
Congratulations Jim! Gasolina is a cutie!
