North Brooklyn Street Art Du Jour: Mixed Bag
Lest the relative silence today on New York Shitty has not been an indication I am kicking off this 4th of July weekend early. Over the next several days I will be posting— albeit not as prolifically as usual. (Hey, even I need to take a vacation once in a while!) The previous having been written, here’s a cavalcade of street art to get the party rolling. Enjoy!

I will end today’s offerings with the above photograph of a father, his daughter and niece enjoying the view of Manhattan from the end of Java Street. As with most things in life, it was not so much the destination as the manner in which they got there that was interesting. You see, today this proud father taught his daughter (who can be seen at left) how to ride a bike. On West Street.
Wearing a “My Dad Rocks” t-shirt, a grimace fueled by determination and training wheels she gradually got the hang of it. Albeit in fits and starts. That’s when dad decided to up the ante; he took her to Java Street.
Many of you might or might not recall that the western end of Java Street is paved with cobble stones. This can be very challenging terrain to tread upon, much less operate a bicycle on. Especially for a novice. But they raise them tough in Greenpoint. And so with a shout of encouragement from dear old dad:
If you can ride across this you can ride across anything!
and one minor “spill” notwithstanding— she did!

News From The Greenpoint Grapevine

Some of you might have noticed that the lot at the western terminus of Greenpoint Avenue (the designated site of WNYC Transmitter Park) has received a heaping helping of mulch. I was initially mystified but have since heard some neighborhood buzz that might shed some light on this recent turn of events: this space will be temporarily opened as a dog run.
Although I am pleased at the prospect that north Greenpoint’s mutts might finally— albeit temporarily— have a place to stretch their legs (and sniff each other’s butts) and I might have the opportunity to see the WNYC Transmitter building up close and personal (it’s a lovely Art Deco building) I must confess that I cannot stop asking myself:
Where’s my park?

The Bounty and Boardwalk Empire are not the only film projects in the Garden Spot nowadays. The above actor (starring in a film being made by some students from the New York Film Academy) was nice enough to ham it up for the camera for me on Oak Street!

Greenpoint Street Art Du Jour: The Battle Of West Street
Filed under: Greenpoint Magic
Lest my previous posts have not made it clear West Street is one of my favorite thoroughfares in Greenpoint. I suspect the reason for this there is very little in the way traffic— or people, for that matter— to distract me from my thoughts. In a city of over 8,000,000 people this is one of a very few places I can be guaranteed “alone time”. Except for yesterday. It was hopping.
I found this battle in progress between Oak and Calyer Street. As some of you might remember I found something remarkably similar to this on Flushing Avenue by the Navy Yard last November. Exactly what does this mean, you ask? I honestly don’t know— but it was a most unexpected and fun discovery to be had on a Sunday afternoon nonetheless!

New York Shitty Day Ender: Summer Fun
I cannot think of a better way to close this lovely weekend than with a few shots of my neighbors (which, yes, includes a sock monkey) having a little fun in the sun… north Brooklyn style!

Greenpoint Recession Watch: Yet Another One Bites The Dust
In news of the hardly surprising variety (as I imagine the market for high end furnishings is next to nonexistent in Greenpoint nowadays— if indeed it ever existed at all) Green & West Furniture, which opened last autumn at 190 West Street, has closed shop.
