Much has been made of Bring To Light, which is slated to grace our waterfront this upcoming weekend. So much so, that I do not think it merits further attention here. However there is an event coinciding with it that I feel compelled to pass along: Light On The Inlet. Here’s a run-down per one of the organizers, Stephen Zacks:

A community event at the site of the future home of The Greenpoint Monitor Museum, produced in conjunction with Bring to Light 2011 – Nuit Blanche New York, will feature The Greenpoint Monitor Museum, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Oliver Tilden Camp No. 26, and The Depressionaires.

The public will have a rare opportunity to visit scenic Bushwick Inlet, a cove on the East River accessible at the end of Quay Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The Greenpoint Monitor Museum will dedicate a sign to the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War and the Museum’s 15th Anniversary while identifying the place as the site of its future home honoring Greenpoint’s history. Funds for the sign were obtained through Assemblyman Joseph Lentol, and a donation from the Greenpoint Lions Club covered a sign support system and installation on land donated by Motiva Enterprises.

The first of a series of USS Monitor and Civil War 150th anniversary events celebrating the “Laying of the Keel of the USS Monitor,” Light on the Inlet will feature Civil War tents, uniforms, artifacts, photos, video projection of archival materials, and live music by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Oliver Tilden Camp No. 26 and The Depressionaires.

Event commences at 2:00 PM

3:00 PM – Unveiling of the Museum’s Site Sign

At 4 PM and sunset (~ 6:39) – The Depressionaires perform polkas, waltzes, and popular songs from another time.

Check it out!

A lady named Laura writes:

Heya Miss Heather,

I was hoping you could reach out to the community of cat lovers, as there is a family of kittens that I found (not my colony) and older cats that need trapping.

I don’t live in the area anymore, but come back every other day to feed the Green street cats and now the kittens, which are on West between Green and Huron.  I’ve posted signs for help from the west st residents but have had only 1 response.  It’s very disheartening.

I am not trained in TNR (trap, neuter and release) and don’t own a vehicle so I am looking for someone who does. I will help in any way, money or otherwise.  The situation is serious. Everytime I come to feed the cats, I see a new kitten.   There are about 12 now.

Again the cats are on West street between Green and Huron, behind a blue construction wall.

Anyone wishing to lend Laura a hand (or would that be paw) should contact her via email at: Laura (dot) Molins (at) showtime (dot) net

Thanks!

Freeman Street

As promised follows are some highlights from my sojourn around north ‘Point this afternoon. Aside from the two above-depicted houses (which can be found on Freeman Street between Manhattan Avenue and McGuinness Boulevard and are lacking electricity) the damage was minimal. Rather, it would appear that the Garden Spot has (inasmuch as is possible) regained its sense of normalcy. As you will see we are enjoying our (scant) public spaces, the El Blablazo tree has survived; some hapless soul was (is?) awaiting access to the Box House Hotel and I even met a dog named “Kitty”. While not depicted, Jerzy (AKA: the chap who lives in a truck on Franklin Street), is safe and sound— if quite busy! I suspect he feels the same way we all do: it’s nice to have our neighborhood— replete in all its glorious eccentricity— back. On that note and without further ado, enjoy!

This weekend I was approached by a chap named Matt. He wished to use a photograph of mine as the basis for an advertisement slated to grace the next issue of Williamsburg Greenpoint News + Arts. As you can see from the above image, I happily obliged him. In any case, this turn of events is as good a reason as any to announce we Greenpointers are in for something pretty nifty this upcoming October…
