Tomorrow: Community Vigil & Public Meeting
While I suspect this does not impact a number of people who read this site, I nonetheless feel compelled to pass this along. There has been a great deal of controversy about the proposed Success Academy Charter School slated to grace the premises of M.S. 50. This has been exacerbated by the fact the operators of this charter school have seen fit to direct a great deal of advertising to the Southside’s more affluent neighbors while seemingly ignoring the Southside, where this school is to be located, altogether. (For example: the copious advertising to be found at the Bedford Avenue stop of the L train.)
This has not gone unnoticed by the concerned parents of M.S. 50 and El Puente, and to this end tomorrow, February 16, 2012, starting at 4:00 p.m. they, along with a number of allied organizations (including St. Nick’s Alliance and Williamsburg and Greenpoint Parents for Our Public Schools, to name a couple) will be having a vigil on the premises of El Puente, followed by a march to M.S. 50 (where a meeting will be held at 5:00 p.m.).
If you are a parent and take issue with what appears to be the privatization of our schools by our city at the expense and/or neglect of its public schools— or simply want to learn more— please do make it a point to attend this event. You can also learn more by checking out the Southside Community School Coalition’s web site.
