Greenpoint Halloween Watch: The Return of The Humboldt Hurler!
Today yours truly found herself traipsing all over the Garden Spot. First it was a belated visit to the Shit Tits. Then I checked out the Greenpoint Food Market (which I highly recommend). After that I swung over to 180 Frost Street to see what’s shaking. Somewhere in between I checked on the progress of my two favorite Halloween haunts: 648 Humboldt Street (whose staple I like to call “the Humboldt Hurler” which graces the beginning of this post) and 97 Russell Street. The competition is heating up and it’s looking good. Follows is a slide show highlighting their progress. Enjoy!
New York Shitty Analysis: 97 Russell is lagging behind— but we still have 21 days to go!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: 3rd Annual District Dog Halloween Parade
Yes, I realize this isn’t until the end of the month but I wanted all you dog owners to have ample time to get a costume prepared for your pups! Some of you might recall that last year’s winner was canine dressed up as our very own and beloved Crosstown Local.

The G Train Dog won! And in keeping with tradition, when called upon, the G Train (dog) would not move. He had to be coaxed from his spot by his owner. Hilarious!

Greenpoint Halloween Watch: Pirate!
I don’t know about you, but on a blah day like this nothing cheers me up like a little Halloween goodness. This pirate hails from Russell Street just down the block from one of the coolest, creepiest houses in Greenpoint. Keep an eye for him!

Joann Kim (who sent me the above flier) writes:
As summer wanes and the crisp fall air makes room for more snuggle time we’re preparing for another awesome Saturday at the market. Since it’s launch we’ve had a mix of returning and new vendors and it’s been amazing to sample and take home sweet and spicy caramel, baba ghanouj, coffee and some amazing scallion pancakes. This week we’ve got folks providing soup, caramel, pickles, jam, empanadas, spreads and baked goods and more all ready to consume and take home, so make sure to come by and sample some delicious treats!
We’d also like to make a humble request, only to ask you to continue spreading the good word about Greenpoint Food Market within your community. We depend on word of mouth and a curious and hungry belly and appreciate your support thus far.
I have a confession to make: this is something I have long planned to check out but have simply never gotten around to. Methinks this weekend I will have to do something about this. You can learn more about the Greenpoint Food Market by checking out their web site. CAVEAT: do not click the previous link if you are hungry!

Greenpoint Halloween Watch Part II: Eye On 97 Russell Street
Okay. So I have given everyone the good news that 648 Humboldt Street has started construction on this year’s fright fest. Well, I have even more Halloween happiness to impart: their friendly rivals at 97 Russell Street are up to some ghoulish goodness of their own!
Some of you might recall the lady behind this wonderful display got off to a late start last year. This was because she took a trip to Egypt!
She has gotten off to a much earlier start this year…
and it’s looking good!!!
If or when the opportunity arises do swing by and see this wonderful display unfold for yourself. If you happen to catch her working be sure to say “hi” and thank her for making Halloween a lot more fun for all of us. She’s a really sweet lady!

P.S.: On a Russell-related note, today the Lutheran Church of the Messiah got a make-over courtesy of our friends, The Good Wife.
Shalom!
From The New York Shitty Inbox: “Craigslist Play Night”
When I got word of this one a few minutes ago I simply HAD to pass it along— even as scant as the details are. Tomorrow, August 21, starting 8:00 p.m. our very own Church of the Messiah will be hosting an evening of entertainment inspired by the most enchanted place in cyberspace: Craigslist. With subject matter as ripe for the picking as the List that is Craig, one would have to try very hard not make this a rollicking evening of entertainment. What’s more, at a paltry buck a play (yes you read me correctly ONE WHOLE DOLLAR), who can complain it if isn’t? Check it out!

Every so often I like to create assignments for myself. This, my latest one, came the way they usually do: via a flight of fancy. One day I wondered to myself if Greenpoint, the Garden Spot of the Universe— and patron par excellence to the aluminum siding industry— sported a rainbow assortment of siding products. What you have just seen, dear readers, is the result of one month’s worth of research. There is only one conclusion that can be drawn from the copious amount photographic evidence/data I have collected: yes!

Greenpoint Gentrification Watch: The Garden Spot
How do you know your neighborhood is getting tony? It’s not Manhattan-esque rent, shops that charge $200 for a pair of shorts or forty story glass towers. It is this.
This veritable I.M.Peie of potty planterdom hails from Russell Street.
