From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part III: A Question About Polish Bakeries
This inquiry comes from a chap named Mark. He writes:
Hiya Heather,
…I have a Greenpoint question for you. What do you think is the best bakery in the neighborhood? I’ve been tasked with bringing a cake to my family’s Thanksgiving celebration, and thought I would try to order something from a place in the neighborhood. Do Polish bakeries tend to take orders? Are they usually open on Thanksgiving morning? I realize that’s actually three questions, but if you know the answer to the first one I’d very very grateful.
WOW… where do I start? Well, I will preface by stating I that tend to stay away from sweets. There are two reasons for this:
1. I am a very, VERY picky eater (just ask my parents or the Mister).
2. Too much sugar makes yours truly bounce off the walls.
The previous disclosures having been made, I have to say my favorite bakery is Jubilatka. Advice/Tips:
- If they are offering apple pie, BUY IT! They do not go overboard with the sugar. The sweetness of the apples they use carries the day!
- Jubilatka usually rolls out a pretty nice assortment of babka this time of year. Their chocolate/ginger bread babka, as I learned last year, is pretty— and tasty!
My piece having been said (and knowing there are many great bakeries here), I am going to offer up Mark’s question to my commenters. What is your favorite Polish Bakery— and why?
Miss Heather
