Greenburg Photo du Jour: Jerzy Popieluszko Square

This afternoon as I was passing through J. Po. Square (as I call it), I finally had the pleasure of meeting the woman responsible for keeping the area around Mr. Popieluszko’s statue spic and span. Her name is Regina and today she and her husband were sweeping and bagging up leaves with a great sense of purpose; tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. there will be an event to celebrate the life (and tragic death) of the namesake of this park! Those of you who happen to be in the area— or are simply curious— should swing by and check it out!

Happy Pulaski Day from New York Shitty!

From The Community Board 1 Public Safety Committee Meeting: What’s Up With WASCO?

I have received a number of emails voicing concern about what it going to happen to one of Greenpoint’s (and McGuinness Boulevard’s) preeminent features: The WASCO Auto Shop. I have some very good news: last night a liquor license application for an “eating and drinking establishment” was approved for this property.

During the proceedings the applicant, a twenty year Greenpoint resident, assured everyone that 139 Nassau Avenue’s signature feature, “WASCOmobile” (which has been identified as a Chevy Nova*), would be kept! In addition, the garage doors looking upon McGuinness Boulevard— the Champs-Élysées of north Brooklyn— will be converted into large bay windows for patrons’ dining pleasure. This was the source of considerable amusement to a number of gentleman on the panel— one of whom noted that all McGuinness Boulevard has in the way of ambiance are “roaring semis”. But hey, as long as everyone keeps their hands and feet inside at all times things should be just fine— right?

*This has been disputed. A chap we’ll call “J” writes:

actually, I think its a Chevy II 100, the cheaper model, but aside from less chrome trim and insulation, its the same thing as a Nova. Before it got painted Greenpoint Beige, it was its original Fawn Tan. Yes, I’m a car geek.

Thoughts, anyone?

From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part III: Anyone Lose A Ferret?

At/near the corner of Nassau Avenue and Leonard Street, to be more specific. If so, I am pleased to announce that he (she?) has been found— safe and sound —thanks to none other than Greenpoint’s pre-eminent veterinarian: Brad Seaman! More details (including a flyer) are forthcoming. However, in the meantime, if you happen to be the keeper of this ferret (or know who is) please shoot the Greenpoint Veterinary Hospital an email at: gpointvet (at) gmail (dot) com or give them a ring at: (347) 529-4353. Thanks!

Coming (Back) To Greenpoint: Blue Bloods

That’s right folks: after The Kensington Prospect (from whose blog I grabbed the image at left) broke the good news that Blue Bloods were looking for “working class neighborhood types” for a film shoot coming to pass in their neighborhood August 12 (lucky devils!) I have learned they will be returning to Greenpoint this upcoming Friday, August 19th. Hipsters, Hispanics, elderly women (and men); men with long hair and tattoos; and of course “Polish types” take note. This is your opportunity to be famous! Or at least “working class”.

On Friday August 19th, 2010 a Television Show Production of “Blue Bloods” will be shooting interior/exterior scenes at Leonard Street @ Nassau Avenue.*

APPROXIMATE TIME:    10am – 5pm

New York Shitty analysis: I suppose it is only fitting that an entity endeavoring to find “working class types” would elect to shoot in a working class neighborhood. Why buy the cow when you can get the milk stereotypes for free?

Now if you don’t mind I am off to procure some Zywiec and polish my scimitar…

Miss Heather

*Which, it should be noted, is along a bus route. Brilliant move, Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting!
