Last Gasp: Greenpoint Goes Green On Sunday!
…sort of. Some of you might remember the debacle at last year’s Earth Day celebration. For those of you who are not in the know fliers were posted advertising this event all over 11211 and 11222. None of them mentioned Exxon Mobil was a sponsor. But they were. A sponsor. When the word got out hilarity ensued.
This year Exxon and their funky bunch will sport a table instead. Per a tipster:
Thank you (excised) for giving me a heads up that Exxon Mobil, WILL have a table at the Go Green Event. I will not be attending the event after all. Even though I appreciate Town Sq(uare’s) efforts, I would feel personally responsible for misleading people, if I didn’t let this group know.
Furthermore, I personally feel that Exxon Mobil has contributed greatly to this community’s environmental problems and I will continue to not attend events that allow the corporation to present themselves as an entity interested in this community’s GREEN well being. Their time is better spent on actions that will get the Creek cleaned up & the affected community greened up.
Those of you who find Exxon’s intransigence and shameless (and regrettably, very effective) attempts to buy off this community by throwing around chump change and purchasing positive PR offensive— or are simply disgusted by the useful idiots who facilitate their green washing— mark your calendars:

Happy Easter From New York Shitty!
Mister Heather took this great photograph of a not-so-rascally rabbit getting a little play time in McCarren Park recently. Follows is a slide show I compiled of some shots I took in the greater 11222 area to celebrate this Easter Sunday. Enjoy!
Get off the computer already and enjoy the sunshine!

A Revue Of Greenpoint Street Furniture
This week the street furniture gods have smiled upon Greenpoint. Perhaps this is due to a number of people moving? Or the fact I live in Bedbug central? I try not to think about it too much to be perfectly frank. In any case, here’s a revue of my latest finds. Enjoy!
This stunning ensemble hails from Newel Street. Not only has a stylish three legged coffee table been thrown… in for good measure…
but you also get a sock. Use it wisely.
This much worse for wear bit of street seating comes courtesy of Norman Avenue. If only these cushions could talk; I bet they’d have an interesting tale to tell!
I found this saucy number on Nassau Avenue. Why someone would discard something this stylish is beyond me. I am certain they had their reasons.
Last— but hardly least— Meeker Avenue hits us up with this cream colored sleeper. There are a lot of home furnishings roaming the streets of our mean city. These are but a few. Until next time…

Greenpoint Photos Du Jour: PROJECT MEGAPOLE

Since yesterday, March 31, was on the heels of none other than April Fool’s Day I decided it would be fun to engage in a little tomfoolery. It took me a little while to figure out how I was going to go about this but after walking around Greenpoint a couple hours it finally came to me:
Geez, there are sure a lot of businesses whose names integrate “Poland” in some way, shape or form here.
I know what you’re thinking:
NO SHIT SHERLOCK, you live in ‘Little Poland”!
Yes, I know. But previous to yesterday afternoon I had never pondered how many business names here reflect the cultural vibrancy of my fair ‘nabe. I decided I simply must know once and for all how many of them there are. To this end I started documenting them. Here are my findings/observations thus far:
- There are a darned lot of them! In a casual 1 1/2 hour search I turned up 25 businesses on the west side of McGuinness Boulevard alone. I imagine once I expand my search to the area around McGolrick Park I will find many more.
- Most were pretty mundane and descriptive in nature, e.g.; Polish Meat Market, Poland Farm, Old Poland Bakery, and so forth. This is a shame, as some of the most stunning examples of marketing I have found here in the 11222 employ a suffix/prefix formula: Anna – Pol Travel, Dunne’s Polemost Liquors, POLSERVICE, POLMART and (my personal favorite) MEGAPOL Music. Granted, this is not the is not the stuff of Saatchi & Saatchi but they do have a certain je nais sais quoi. Besides, if it is good enough for The Garden Spot of The Universe it’s sure as hell good enough for me…
and YOU! On that note and without further ado here is a slide show featuring the findings of what I have christened “Project: MEGAPOLE”. When I have completed my mission you can look forward to a map, statistical breakdown and yes, maybe even a pie chart or two. Enjoy!

TOMORROW: Brooklyn Standard Is Open For Business!
Unlike most of the people (who still in fact have jobs) reading this, I do not work a conventional 9-5 work week. I like this because it enables me to go out and take pictures on lovely days like this one. What’s more, it gives me a leg up on learning what’s going on. Case in point: Brooklyn Standard. Not only are they hurriedly getting the store prepped for its Grand Opening…
but said opening is scheduled for tomorrow, April 1. No foolin’!

Cody Utzman was kind enough to let me snoop around and take a few snaps so you can get a sneak peek of what awaits you tomorrow. Here they are!
I think I can safely say this is the first and only “bodega” I have ever seen in Greenpoint that is appointed with a chandelier. I suppose that’s gentrification for you!
