New York Shitty Day Ender: Nassau Avenue Crater Fixed!
Remember the crater/portal at the intersection of Newel Street and Nassau Avenue that Jay Lombard brought to my attention January 28, 2010? It took six weeks— but it has been repaired!
He writes:
This isn’t earth shattering-ly amazing news BUT it was nice to see. Remember that photo I sent a few weeks ago of the large hole in the street on Nassau? Well, it was repaired recently and I like to think that calling 311 helped get it fixed a little faster than not reporting it at all. Won’t know the answer to that, but they did a damn fine job patching it up! Now if only we could stop drivers (and pedestrians) from texting when they should be watching where they’re going then the streets of NYC will be safe for EVERY body.
I even saw a dude texting while riding his bike down manhattan ave – at least he was in the bike lane.
Ha
As it would happen I spent a great deal of my time today communicating with a buddy of mine who is a community liaison for our State Assemblyman: Joe Lentol. First we discussed the lack of proper sanitation on Eagle Street. Then we went over the chicken feet at the American Playground. What does it say about our city when it takes six weeks to fix a pothole and a State Assemblyman feels compelled to raise said city’s awareness of quality of life issues in Greenpoint? The answer is very simple: not much.

Has Anyone Seen Socks?
Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
I happened upon this flier yesterday on Nassau Avenue. Socks is a five year old grey and white “tuxedo cat” from Dobkin Street. If you have seen this gent or know of his whereabouts please contact his “people” at the above-listed telephone number. Thanks!

Spotted On McGuinness Boulevard: Missing Ghostbike
Many of you are no doubt familiar with the senseless death of Solange Raulson. For those of you who are not, she was struck and killed by a truck at the intersection of Nassau Avenue and McGuinness Boulevard December 13, 2009. Many questions have arisen about how this tragic event came to pass and how it is being handled by the N.Y.P.D. Most remain unanswered. But two things can be asserted with 100% certainty: she died too young and is missed by many.
ghostbikes.org erected a memorial at this intersection (which you see at left) to serve as a reminder of Ms. Raulston’s life— and death. Now jump forward to today: as I was running errands I made an interesting discovery.
This item has gone MIA. I find this curious as the other memorials at this intersection were untouched. Does anyone have the 411 regarding what happened here? If so, please share via comments or contact me email at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com.
Thanks!

Greenpoint Photos Du Jour: 271 Nassau Avenue Gets That Touch of Urban Authenticity
Filed under: 11222, Abjectecture, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
The construction fence isn’t even down and yet this edifice (which could pass as “workers housing” in any country with “People’s Republic” in its moniker) has already received a make-over.
Impressive.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Beware
Jay (who sent me the above photo) writes:
Future location of a pedestrian’s broken ankle. Corner of Newell and Nassau. 10 inches wide 3 feet deep… and growing.
While hardly the stuff of front page news it DOES touch upon something I have long intended but neglected to expound upon on New York Shitty. Namely, what does one due when he (or she) finds something like this in north Brooklyn? Call 311 ASAP. You will be given a complaint number. Write down this number and forward it along with a simple description of what you have reported to Community Board 1. This can be done quickly and easily via email at bk01 (at) cb (dot) nyc (dot) gov.
I realize this may seem like a lot of fuss over a paltry pot hole. But I would like to counter that although Jay saw this hazard in time to walk around it, someone else (especially a bicyclist) may not. Be a good neighbor: when you see something like this, call it in. It’s our community folks. Let’s watch out for each other!
