From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Mugging On Banker Street?

This item comes via a woman named Camille. She writes:

Hey Heather, just wanted to let you know about a mugging last week.

I don’t know if you post this kind of thing, but I wondered if it might help any readers avoid a similar situation. My boyfriend was mugged last Thursday night at 9 pm on Banker between Meserole and Calyer. Two late teens/early twenties guys approached him for directions, then grabbed him and threatened him with a box cutter. They had a little scuffle and pushed him down to the ground, where he hit his head. They took his wallet and phone. Tall good looking guy in baseball cap (turned backwards) and one short guy with chin-length hair wearing a white doo-rag.

I suppose if anyone saw/heard/knows anything, or found a brown leather wallet (kind of western looking old souvenir with a deer on it), it’d be great to know. The wallet may have been ditched near mccarren park.

Looks like it could be some repeat offenders, from this post on the Brooklyn Paper.

If you find this wallet please contact Camille via email at: camillemcmorrow (at) gmail (dot) com. And oh yeah— be careful out there!

Lost In Greenpoint: Vitrine

As the gentrification march bravely continues in the Garden Spot I imagine we’ll be seeing more of this kind of thing (which comes from Manhattan Avenue at Meserole Avenue). If you have seen this person’s vitrine or know of its whereabouts please contact its rightful owner at the above telephone number. Thanks!

Methinks the peeps at Bartosz Travel might be taking this extraterrestrial thing a wee bit too seriously.

Peter writes:

So today I awoke to many sirens and word that a scaffolding had collapsed down the street (on Meserole & Manhattan), and that a worker had fallen. On my way back from getting coffee just now, at the rumored location of the fall, I happened upon the attached…

Yikes.

Miss Heather

P.S.: Here’s a rundown of what happened from a gentleman named Colin:

I was just out for a walk and happened upon a big hubbub at the corner of Meserole and Manhattan. Looks like the scaffold at the building on the southeast corner (which I believe had previously been slapped with an order to vacate) collapsed, and a construction worker fell four or five stories. I didn’t want to pry or rubberneck, so I’ve got no further information, but I thought that this was a neighborhood happening of considerable import. Whoever it was that fell, I really hope they’re alright. Looks like it was a long way down.

UPDATE, May 12, 2010: the address of the building in question is 760-764 Manhattan Avenue. 760 gets a clean bill of health per the Department of Buildings. When one examines 762-764 Manhattan Avenue (AKA: 106 Meserole Avenue) it gets much more interesting:

So let me get this straight: not only was this sidewalk shed not up to standard, but it was erected without a permit. Someone had to die in order for this to be discovered?!?

Inexcusable.

Here’s the final grotesque. Taken by yours truly today while riding the B43 bus:
