New York Shitty Street Seating Du Jour: Adapt & Overcome!

McGuinness street seating 1 nys

If there is one thing I have observed in my years living in the Garden Spot, it is this; its citizens are thoughtful and often quite resourceful. As the neighborhood has “changed” this has diminished somewhat— but as the above photo attests some of that “community spirit” persists. We you have just looked at, gentle readers, is an ad hoc piece of shuttle bus seating installed on the western side McGuinness Boulevard just a hop skip from Kent Street.

Bus Stop Seating nys

The selection of chair is welcoming, even downright cheerful. Just want a tired commuter would want to see while negotiating our mass transit system, In terms of style (if not capacity), it far surpassses its kindred in Long Island City. But would I expect anything less of our fair burgh? Of course not! Last but hardly least —the piece de resistance, if you will— is additional measure taken so as to discourage theft.

This is, naturally, a coordinating/”re-purposed” red brassiere. I give this arrangement two enthusiastic New York Shitty thumbs up. Bravo!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Lights Down At Nassau Avenue & McGuinness Boulevard?

Per a tipster:

the light on Nassau and McGuinness is totally out. I called 911 at 7:20 and no one showed up – except the cops who drive through the knot of people/cars about 7:30 and didn’t stop. I went out to get wine about 8pm and there was still no one there. Its gonna be bad.

More details:

I walked up to Nassau/McG at 720 heading home, lights were totally out. traffic was bad and impatient, so were the peds/bikes (yes bikes). I called 911, they took the ca(ll), but I got a feeling they thought I was calling about a single light bulb being out. Waited ten more minutes, worried that someone was going to blast through, trucks, cabs, etc. Other people called the pct. Patrol car w/ 4 cops (not sure if it was a 94th) wormed its way through the knot headed north, didn’t even stop only blipped the siren…

As of 8:43 it is still K.O.ed. Be careful over there, folks!

A lady named Christa writes:

5 people have been killed in this intersection and it is one block away from a school.  The community is demanding traffic calming techniques including a possible slow zone.

This petition has close to 250 signatures in 48 hours.

My interest in this is personal as my husband was hit by a car turning off of McGuinness Blvd.  Luckily, he wasn’t injured badly.  As our Assemblyman Joe Lentol says ““People here aren’t afraid of getting mugged – they’re afraid of getting hit.”

Here is another article from the “Daily News” (dated 2010) with the shocking statistic that “researchers witnessed drivers violate traffic laws every 17 seconds at Nassau Ave” at the exact intersection where Nicole Detweiler was killed as well as 4 others.

http://m.nydailynews.com/1.165534

Please considering covering this story.  The last thing we need is another study from the DOT that goes nowhere.

Again, here is the petition if you post those on your site.  Personally, I think we need a 20 mile an hour slow zone on McGuinness since drivers regularly go 9 miles over the speed limit.  Most pedestrians will survive a crash from a car going 30 miles per hour, but won’t survive one going 40 miles per hour.

Mcguinness1

That, “Horsecrap”, the title of the email I received from an anonymous tipster. With a certain level of reluctance I opened it and, as you can see, what I beheld was beyond my wildest imagination (and I can imagine an awful lot). Sometimes one finds love—

horsecrap

or at least its, um, droppings— in the strangest of places. In this case McGuinness Boulevard just a stone’s throw from the Shit Tits. Well done, fellow Greenpointers (?). WELL DONE!

P.S.: I wish I had done this when I married my prince charming, the Mister, almost eight years ago. Of course our anniversary is coming up on Halloween. Hmm…

A very nice lady named Lori writes:

Hello Miss Heather!!

I have found a kitty roaming green st between Mcguiness and Manhattan. I rang bells looking for her home but no one knew her family. Right now I have my own fours cats and a friend that found herself homeless and her cat in my apt. So during the day she comes in the apt and at night is in the enclosed backyard. Not the ideal situation but I couldn’t leave her on the street. I am leaving for vacation in a week and need HELP finding her home or a foster… or maybe a new home. She is very sweet with a bit of cattitude but doesn’t even give me hard time getting in the carrier taking her from the yard to the apt at least twice a day… she does growl a bit while in it just to let me know she doesn’t love this plan! NO microchip and pretty sure female.

If any of you know to whom this lady belongs, please contact her good Samaritan at the above-listed phone number. Spread the word!

A person we’ll call “L” writes:

Hi,

This cat followed me home late last night and wouldn’t leave. It’s very friendly but was very hungry and dirty. It doesn’t have a collar only an old flee collar. It’s currently hanging out in our back courtyard with food and water. Would you mind posting it on your blog in case it’s owner is looking for it? Please don’t post my email address! The cat was spotted near Kent St and McGuinness when it started following me.

Thanks!

Motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists please take note some of the traffic and crosswalk signals at McGuinness Boulevard (such as this one at Java Street) are not working. Be safe and look out for each other, Greenpointers!
