From The New York Shitty Inbox: Sunflowers For The Garden Spot?
Morning Miss Heather,
I’ve been living in Greenpoint for the past 4 years now and follow your blog regularly. For the past year I’ve been giving away free sunflowers all over greenpoint, to young and old, greenpointer and new yorkers. I feel the greenpoint (especially) needs color and the perfect way to accomplish this is through sunflowers. I raise baby sunflowers from seeds and then give them away, in turn spreading the wealth of color. It’s time to go to the next level though. So, is there any kind of funding that the NY Parks dept can supply? If so, how could I propose a plan for funding…
I think this is a terrific endeavor, Matt. And while I do not know how one goes about securing funding for such projects, I know a number of people reading this blog do. If anyone has advice for Matt please tender them via comment or email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. I will gladly forward them. Otherwise you can read more about Matt’s project by clicking here.

Jason (who forwarded me the above find) writes:
Hi Heather,
First of all, I love your blog! I have been a proud resident of the Garden Spot for 15 years, and I have come to count on you for news on our illustrious nabe…especially restaurant news. Anyway, this little (creepy, but I think most dolls are creepy) beauty was on Norman Ave near McGuinness last Friday the 12th of March. Dunno if you want to post them but here you go.
Hope you’re well, and enjoying our incipient spring weather!
Thanks for the kind words, Jason! They are greatly appreciated as is your find. And on that note I am off to enjoy this lovely day (and perhaps grab an ice cream cone). More later.

Spotted On McGuinness Boulevard: Missing Ghostbike
Many of you are no doubt familiar with the senseless death of Solange Raulson. For those of you who are not, she was struck and killed by a truck at the intersection of Nassau Avenue and McGuinness Boulevard December 13, 2009. Many questions have arisen about how this tragic event came to pass and how it is being handled by the N.Y.P.D. Most remain unanswered. But two things can be asserted with 100% certainty: she died too young and is missed by many.
ghostbikes.org erected a memorial at this intersection (which you see at left) to serve as a reminder of Ms. Raulston’s life— and death. Now jump forward to today: as I was running errands I made an interesting discovery.
This item has gone MIA. I find this curious as the other memorials at this intersection were untouched. Does anyone have the 411 regarding what happened here? If so, please share via comments or contact me email at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com.
Thanks!

(Or at least proof)
The ‘Burgificaction’ of McCarren Park pisses me off in a big, BIG way. I was reminded of this yesterday. So as to clear up any confusion as to the provenance of the McCarren Park Pool I offer you this: an article from the August 1, 1936 edition of the New York Times. Our city’s ostensible newspaper of record.
Political bosses in Brooklyn are a dime a dozen. History (thankfully) forgets most of them— but not the “Prince of Garden Spot of The World” AKA: Peter J. McGuinness! A well known (if reviled) thoroughfare hereabouts bears his name. If it wasn’t for Mr. McGuinness’s chicanery, political savvy* and charm Williamsburgers wouldn’t have a pool in which to party (or piss).
In, I repeat,
Greenpoint

P.S.: How can you not love a guy who says this (about a brief sojourn in “the south”):
I don’t like that Jim Crow they got or their goddam white crow either.
*His career survived the Seabury hearings.
