OPEN: La Taverna
Last night as the Mister and I were walking down Manhattan Avenue when we noticed a buzz of activity in front of La Taverna. Upon closer inspection we learned they were having a Grand Opening $4.00 all-you-can-eat introductory buffet. Since we had eaten Italian food for lunch we passed, but I did make it a point to peruse their menu. Not only was it rather extensive (and vegetarian friendly) but the prices were incredibly reasonable (for example: the Rigatoni Arrabiata was a cool $6.75). Methinks I will wait a couple of weeks (so they can iron out the kinks) and give them a whirl. You can check out their menu by clicking here, here, here, and here.

Be advised La Taverna does not serve wine at this time. So if you want a little vino with your eats you need to bring your own.

Manhattan Avenue Photos Du Jour: Happy 4th of July!
This morning when I headed out for my daily constitutional I quickly sensed something was amiss.
Namely that Manhattan Avenue north of Freeman Street is celebrating— or preparing to celebrate— the 4th of July. In June.
Those of you who are wondering what is going on (and have not noticed the multitude of notices), a forthcoming film by Columbia pictures entitled The Bounty* will be filming a parade scene (replete with stunts, oh joy!) here on Monday, June 15th through Wednesday June 17th from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
How the hell this got approved without a public outcry is beyond me. But in any case those of you who have the misfortune of relying upon the B61 or B43 for your daily commute (and I imagine there are quite a few) might want to start planning accordingly.
In the plus column it would appear this endeavor has netted some business for the community. Like this float in the works I stumbled upon at Kings Studios on Moultrie Street.

*Which will star Jennifer Aniston, among others. Including Gerard Butler. Not to be confused with this Jerry Butler or this one. Apparently this Butler is some seriously HOT SHIT. Who knew? I wouldn’t; I’m married and don’t give a damn. But rest assured I’ll charge these broads serious cash money to camp on my roof.
Greenpoint Photos Du Jour: J. Josephs & Son
Filed under: Greenpoint Magic
The funny thing about living in Greenpoint (and New York City for that matter) is how much you take for granted until it’s gone. In my case this would be J. Joseph’s Sons Company. This storefront (located at 1058 Manhattan Avenue) is among my very favorites in north Brooklyn. We learned last week that one former holding of the J. Joseph empire has become a rather tony art gallery but otherwise the rest of J. Josephs (or “J. Jo’s” as I like to call it) is more or less intact.
What’s more, they have recently put something incredibly nifty in their window…
a couple of shots of Manhattan Avenue from 1928! Just for fun I decided to recreate the above panorama.
I had to take a slightly different vantage point (only someone with a certifiable death wish would stand in the middle of Manhattan Avenue) but many of the elements are still there. The notable exception being the movie theater to the left. It was called the Midway.
This has since been demolished. It has since become the site of an(issued on-again, off again construction site. Judging from the permits its issued it will be a five story apartment building. Provided it gets completed anytime soon— which I seriously doubt.
To close on a bit of related trivia, many of you are no doubt aware that our Starbucks (located at 910 Manhattan Avenue) and the drug store located at 723 Manhattan Avenue were both movies houses at one time. They were the American Theater (later the Chopin Theater) and the Meserole Theater respectively. What you might not know is one more movie house in Greenpoint is still standing. It’s a little difficult to recognize at first glance but it’s there nonetheless. Anyone care to guess where it is?

New York Shitty Day Ender: Summer Fun
I cannot think of a better way to close this lovely weekend than with a few shots of my neighbors (which, yes, includes a sock monkey) having a little fun in the sun… north Brooklyn style!

*Yes, this item hails from Long Island City. But I couldn’t resist posting it in the hope it will inspire someone to trick out a Yugo.
Best Tree Pit In Brooklyn!
So let’s recap. We have recently learned that Manhattan Avenue is now graced with a terrifyingly nice art gallery and in the previous post we checked out a wonderful garden on the Southside (where the sign to the left can be found). What do these previous two items have in common, you ask? Not very much I suppose— but they are both very germane to this post.
Inasmuch as I harbor a fascination for the abject the fact of the matter is I also take great pleasure in things that are visually pleasing. The furniture I saw at Gallery 1889 was aesthetically stunning but not the kind of thing I would want in my home. It was a little too sterile and user “unfriendly” for my taste. Simply put, I liked the form but there was a sore lack of attention to function.
Now that I have established my philosophy about items made for human use I would like to segue to the subject of trees. Or more specifically how people in Greenpoint tend to treat them. This is can be summarized in two words:
1: Like
2: SHIT
But Greenpoint’s trees (and tree pits) are not only used as ad hoc trash receptacles and public lavatories. Anyone who has the misfortune of living on Greenpoint Avenue between Manhattan Avenue and Franklin Street will tell you they are often employed as bike racks with appalling results. Yours truly has seen many a bike lock and/or chain digging into the trunk of some hapless tree all because some asshole is too damned lazy to keep his or her bicycle in his/her apartment (where, I will add, it belongs).
If one cannot bother to be friendly to our leafy companions he or she should simply leave them alone. I fail to understand why some harbor such antagonism towards our photosynthesizing friends. Especially when you can do something incredibly nifty that helps them and gives you a place relax and/or watch the world go by.
Which is exactly what the folks at 1071 Manhattan Avenue have done.
Someone put a lot of thought and effort into creating this premium example of street seating. I will highlight a few of my favorite features.
First up: wire mesh has been employed to discourage canines (and their human counterparts) from giving this tree a golden shower. Or using it as a waste basket.
Speaking of trash, note how a bag has been thoughtfully placed on the back of the bench to provide a receptacle your garbage. As for the table/newspaper rack that’s genius. Plain and simple.
The garden (replete with tulips) is the icing on the cake!
In closing whoever designed and executed this, the best tree pit in Brooklyn, deserves some real and lasting recognition be it from our municipal government or the design community as a whole. It has an elegant simplicity and feel for human use one does not see much nowadays. In other words it is a perfect marriage of form and function. This is the Falling Water of tree pits.

P.S.: Special thanks go out to Laura Hofmann for reminding me to write about this. Thanks!
New & Noteworthy: Gallery 1889
Today as I was running errands I stumbled upon a most pleasant and unexpected surprise…
…an art gallery has opened on Manhattan Avenue! Obviously I simply had to go inside and see what this Gallery 1889 was all about. Much to my surprise the work they had on display was actually good. Even more surprising the woman working there nice enough to tell me a little about the space (like when it officially opened which was May 15th, if you’re wondering) and gladly let me poke around and take a few photographs. Follows is a little taste of what I found. Enjoy!
These images hardly do this work (especially the really neat whirligig contraption in the window) justice. Go to Gallery 1889 and see this show, RE/BUILD, for yourself. It’s quite something.
