Greenpoint Photo Du Jour: Alternative Use For Manhattan Avenue’s Bike Lane #457
Grab a dolly and your best bud and take that new twin mattress home!
To close on the subject of mattresses always exercise caution when purchasing one. In New York State it is legal to sell “reconditioned” mattresses, e.g.; used mattresses that purport to be “sanitized” for re-use. I use the word “purport” because they quite often are not. Reconditioned mattresses are required by law to have a yellow tag— but unfortunately often do not. It should also be noted that reconditioning isn’t a guarantee it won’t harbor a few unwanted guests, if you know what I mean.If the price of that mattress (or box springs) seem to be too good to be true, it probably is.
To get an idea why this practice should be abolished (or at the very least strictly regulated) click here and you will be redirected to New York Vs. Bed Bugs web site. If you want to see some shit that will really gross you out click here.
Sleep tight!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Holy Sh*t!
Luke writes (in an email entitled “Crikey!”):
this morning my girlfriend and i were in champion coffee’s backyard
and this guy showed up… wtf?
Household pet or is Garden Spot of the Universe at long last reverting back to its original primordial state? First is was a raccoon*, then it was a chicken on Craigslist and and now reptiles have entered the fray. Too bad Marlin Perkins is no longer with us— as it would appear our ‘nabe is a becoming a veritable Noah’s Ark of critterdom.

*about whom Luke writes:
also, the raccoon that was in the tree @ box st has moved on. we saw him on tues (sleeping), and he was still there yesterday (stretching etc). i hope he’s ok.

Purloined Row Boat Update: Found?

Laura wrote (at 9:23 p.m.):
I see that someone lost a row boat. We found one on Saturday at the Nature Walk. I don’t recall if the sides were the color described. From the back on the photo, looks like it could be grey. There’s a number on it 995. I’m going to call the phone number listed to see if it’s the same row boat.
Laura writes at (9:31 p.m.):
The phone number that the folks have written on that sign is the 94th precinct phone number. (718-383-3879— Ed. Note) The officer who answered the phone knew nothing about the boat, but is going to call one of the detectives to see if they know anything. Good luck with that!
Let’s see. All they (94th precinct) have to do is go to 132 Noble Street, ask for a chap named Christopher, take him to the Nature Walk and ask him if this his boat?
So it goes.

New & Noteworthy: Orphanage Mopeds
Okay, this isn’t that new (per the gentleman I spoke to this afternoon this establishment has been open since April) but I want to pass it along to all my moped-loving friends and neighbors. Although I eschew operating motorized transportation (or anything with wheels period— I do so in the interest of public safety*), I think mopeds are a great way to fight gridlock. What’s more, instead of selling new merchandise the folks at Orphanage restore older (and many cases, very neat) models for re-use. Swing by their shop (or web site) and see for yourself!

A Newtown Creek PSA
Filed under: 11222, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Long Island City, Newtown Creek, Queens
Today I had the utmost urge to go out for a walk. I did not want to venture too far, however, lest I get caught in a torrential downpour. So I kept my wanderings local…
and went to the new park at the end of Manhattan Avenue. It was at this location that I found the following corker.
OK, I understand the city has to put these signs up. But who in their right mind would want to eat something that once called this home?
Gross.

P.S.: WTF is this?!?
Greenpoint Photos Du Jour: A Little Wildlife In The Garden Spot
Filed under: Greenpoint Magic
Today was exactly as I wanted it to be: peaceful and even a little bit dull. That is until this evening when my buddy Laura tipped me off to the excitement unfolding in far north Greenpoint.
A raccoon took residence in a tree on Manhattan Avenue between Clay and Box Street.
Amusingly enough he (or she)Â is hanging his hat across the street from the Greenpoint Hotel and the Marzili Hostel. Maybe they were booked tonight?
Or maybe they have a “no raccoons allowed policy”? This is a shame as he (or she) is pretty darned cute!
Peek-a-boo!
