‘Tis The Season: El Blablazo
When I received the above photographs from Christo this evening I knew I had to see what the guys behind El Blablazo were cooking up in person.
It is nothing short Greenpoint glorious!
The gentleman responsible for this masterpiece have assured me that they will resume decorating El Blablazo tomorrow. In addition, they told me anyone was welcome to come by and add decorations because this tree is (and I quote) “a public tree”!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: La Taverna Gets DOH’ed?
It’s proving to be a HOPPIN’ day at the New York Shitty inbox. Charles writes:
Need to snap a shot, but did you see La Taverna, the italian place at Java and Manhattan, was closed as per order of the health and mental hygiene dept? Ack!
I did a little poking around the New York City Health Department’s inspection records and the latest inspection dated from May— and La Taverna passed with flying colors. This certainly makes one wonder what happened. If you have the scoop please share via comments. Inquiring Greenpointers want to know!

UPDATE, 3:45 p.m.: I did a walk-by. Whatever happened it appears to have been trivial because La Taverna will be open as of 5:00 p.m. this evening!

Or would that be much to DO this weekend? If what I found in my inbox today is any indication there is a log going on this weekend. Mark writes:
Hey Miss Heather did you see this? Papacito’s is celebrating it’s pseudo-one year birthday and recently acquired liquor license. They’re inviting people to come celebrate with free food and tequila. Pretty cool!
Most cool indeed! Among the goodies promised are free tequila shots from 11:00 – 1:00 a.m. and live mariachi music. Check it out!

If mariachi is not your cup of tea, a good friend of mine (and fabulous D.J.), The Professor, will be spinning an evening of “Motor City rock, soul, punk and psycho-funk” at Greenpoint’s very own Boulevard Tavern. Having known the Professor for some time I can attest to his outstanding taste in music. Go. You will not be disappointed!

This little guy got lost in the junk shop last night. It’s a fun place for kitten and humankind alike. I don’t blame him. But at some point the party ends, e.g.; you don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here. To this end I was entrusted by Larry da Junkman to retrieve Anthony and take him back to his rightful home. I did so by a string and he warms the Skwinkles of my heart!

Greenpoint Photos Du Jour: Ho! Ho! Ho!
Although I am not into this kind of thing there is something to be about the industriousness of Rush Hour’s latest viral marketing campaign. Inasmuch as I can tell they have filled every pay phone kiosk on Manhattan Avenue with these cards.

A North Greenpoint PSA: The Indian Groceries Are In!
Last night I took the Mister to see the marvel that is the Mini Mart Deli Grocery. True to the proprietor’s word, there was a slew of Indian delicacies awaiting our perusal.
Spices!
Indian food fixins’.
And for the less culinary inclined: Micro Curry!
All in all I was very impressed with all the foodstuffs they have managed to cram inside and outside this establishment. Not only are the usual suspects (such as tomatoes, which truth be told didn’t look so great.) in abundance but there was more exotic fare such as okra, ginger (some of the best I have seen hereabouts) and culantro (albeit labeled as “spinach”) for the picking. Make no mistake about it dear readers: I am very excited about this!

Colin writes:
Just thought you might get a kick out of this ridiculous video shot at Greenpoint’s own Fruit and Deli Market. Enjoy!
Not only did I almost feel of my chair laughing at this but it literally rendered the Mister speechless. I assure you this is no small accomplishment. Thank you so much for passing this along, Colin!

Williamspoint Slide Show Du Jour: 2001-2004 B.C.

The above photograph is probably in some part responsible for motivating me to write about Greenpoint. Like most things in my life, it was an accident. I had shot a roll of film, then 9/11 happened. Not having the means to buy more film I rewound it, thus creating this double exposure of life on Manhattan Avenue juxtaposed with Manhattan going black.
I do not want to suggest that this photo set is dark. It isn’t. The Garden Spot of the Universe and the people who live here are resilient and vibrant. But it does make one wonder about how things have changed since these photographs were taken.
My favorite is this one, lest you are wondering.
