MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Newtown Creek Boat Tour

I almost forgot about this one but thankfully got a reminder from my buddy (and Chairman of the endeavor): Mitch Waxman. Despite the untimely passing of Bernard Ente, the tour guide extraordinaire of this event, the show must go on. And go on it will this upcoming May 21st. Tickets cost $60.00 per person and can be purchased by clicking here or contacting Mitch via email at: waxmanstudio (at) gmail (dot) com. I am very aware that $60.00 is a pretty hefty sum for many folks however, I speak from personal experience that you will get an eyeful (and noseful) for your money. Follows is a slide show of highlights from a tour yours truly took a few years ago. Enjoy!

From The New York Shitty Photo Pool, Part II: Rosemary

Rosemary

Today I was absolutely delighted to noticed that a new person has joined my photo pool! Of the above stunning subject Seaniedawg writes:

This is Rosemary. Born in October of 1919, she moved from Greenpoint, Brooklyn to Long Island City, Queens in 1923 and has resided in the same house ever since. What was once a tree-lined street with 3 bakeries in as many blocks, has now faded into obscurity by the weathering factory buildings of an industrial past, and the high-rise condos of a gentrifying future.

Now in her 91st year, her face is etched with the experiences of a New York City long languished, and I luxuriate in the opportunities I have to hear her stories.

Bitter she may be at times, yet still full of vim and vigor, I see Rosemary’s face as a vestige of generations gone, but not wholly forgotten.

Great shot— and story!

Queens Slide Show du Jour: D.U.P.A.L.I.C. & Beyond

59 Street Bridge

Yesterday was a rather trying one for yours truly. First it was my site crashing at midnight. This made me rather unhappy. Awakening to find it was still down made me unhappier. Realizing however this was due to factors way beyond my control I decided to revisit one of my favorite places…

Polish Paradise

Polish Paradise located in scenic D.U.P.A.L.I.C. (Down Under the Pulaski At Long Island City). As always, it did not disappoint.

Pylon

For starters, this is without argument the largest pot hole yours truly has ever laid eyes upon.

VERY SPECIAL

And of course there is the extensive array of empty liquor containers to be found at this location. I was particularly impressed with this 1.75 liter bottle of Hennessy. That stuff ain’t cheap! Arguably the most provocative part of my trek came to pass in a rather desolate part of Long Island City. It was there I was somewhat startled to hear someone shout:

Hey lady, why aren’t you in Greenpoint?

This came courtesy of the inimitable proprietress of Word Books: Christine Onorati. In any case (and without further ado) here are some highlights from my journey. NOTE/SPOILER: There’s some pretty neat street art at the end. Enjoy!
