Long Island City Photos du Jour: 5Pointz Selections
This post goes out to my new friend (and art lover) who took the opportunity to strike up a conversation with yours truly as she was taking the above photographs. Our conversation started when he told me that he really liked this artwork and he had never been to 5Pointz before.
Miss Heather: There’s some really nice stuff to be found. Be sure to go around the corner.
Miss Heather’s New Friend: You go around taking pictures of this stuff?
M.H.: Yes.
M.H.N.F.: Why don’t you take my picture?
M.H.: Sure, why not?
M.H.N.F.: Do you have a boyfriend?
M.H.: No— it’s worse than that: I’m married.
M.H.N.F.: So your husband lets you go around taking pictures of men?
M.H.: Yes, I’m just going to do what I want anyway. I also take pictures of women. I let him look at those.
And with that he laughed and I went on my merry way!

New York Shitty Slide Show du Jour: 5Pointz
It has been awhile since yours truly has paid Long Island City a visit. Today I did so, albeit hurriedly. I am not too sure what the deal was with the busload of tourists milling about but there was certainly plenty of wonderful art to be enjoyed. Without further ado here it is!

New York Shitty Day Ender: Live From Newtown Creek

While prognosticated, the rapture did not happen today. Or if it did I was left behind and am ready, willing and able to process copious amounts of photographs and video footage from my Newtown Creek experience. Before we proceed here are some interesting facts/observations:
- Courtesy of a nearby radio station the Kosciuszko Bridge is “live”. In other words when men perform maintenance on it they must be “grounded”.
- The sour mash from breweries which formerly dotted the creek were fed to cows and their milk (which was reputed to taste rather awful) was then sold to orphanages at deep discounts. For this reason the product was called “orphan’s milk”.
- The “product” from our local waste treatment plant is dried into cakes (their words, not mine) and sold on the open market as fertilizer.
- After a week of heavy rainfall Newtown Creek is awash in Coney Island whitefish.
