Spotted At First Avenue: “Official Neglect”

I am not a marketing whiz. I leave that to the experts. But placing such a polemic at the entrance of Canarsie-bound L train, well, strikes me as being misguided at best. We have problems of our own. Believe you me when I waited for the mighty Crosstown Local (which was more fragrant than usual) last night— for over 30 minutes— at Metropolitan Avenue— I found this missive wretchedly comical. You want to see neglect, Upper West Siders? Why not cross the pond and see the not-so-benign neglect that our city has seen to lavish upon us G trainers.

21st Street, Long Island City, Queens

Taken March 6, 2010.

This sign is unnecessary. When foul-smelling muck is dripping from the ceiling people will inevitably avoid the edge of the platform until it is absolutely necessary. That is, when the G train finally arrives. Taken July 4, 2010.

If my memory serves me correctly this tile work was done in the late 90’s. As of July 4, 2010 it looks like ass. I skipped Nassau Avenue. Here’s why: because there is a busted water main and it makes the Norman Avenue entrance smell like dead fish. But back to the purpose of this post:

  • Token booths being unattended
  • Dysfunctional Metrocard machines
  • Non-functional panopticons (Lest anyone from the Upper West Side is reading this: the ones on the L and G appear to be fully functional. Exactly what effect this has as a crime deterrent has yet to be determined.)
  • I know of not a single person who has attempted to use the intercoms in North Brooklyn. It is popularly considered as an exercise in futility. (If anyone has please contact me via email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. I’d love to hear your story.)

These conditions (and worse) are taken for granted in the hinterlands (READ: the outer boroughs), my uptown friends. We often have to go above ground in order to interface with a station agent. Occasionally we encounter an actual human being.

To conclude: the grievances our friends at 86 Street have stated are pretty much par for the course. They are nothing special. These people are simply better organized. Perhaps a few G,L,J,M,7 (to name a few) trainers would like to make their voices heard at this meeting?

There is cool and then there is COOL. Having a portrait of your wedding party shot in front of 5Pointz definitely qualifies as the latter. You can’t see it in the above photograph but the bride is wearing metallic magenta high tops. Very cute!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Take The Newtown Creek Survey!

This item has been brought to my attention by a number of people and at last I have some time to pass it along to you. Here’s the deal: the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is dedicating $10,000,000 to (and I quote) “communities affected by delays constructing the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant”. Naturally Greenpoint figures foremost among the aforementioned “communities”. To this end the City Parks Foundation has created a survey to assess how we, the residents, use our public parks. This, in turn, will in some measure be used to determine how this money will be spent. I advise each and every one of you to take a moment to fill out this survey. You can do so quickly and easily online by clicking here.

In closing, I would like to tender a few thoughts:

1. I find it curious that Greenpoint, Williamsburg and Long Island City appear to be the only communities that are affected by the Waste Treatment Plant. I seriously doubt someone in, say, Maspeth or Sunnyside would agree with this assessment.

2. This survey states that these funds will be spent after consulting with local community groups. Who, may I ask, are these community groups? If Open Space Alliance North Brooklyn whose Executive Director, Stephanie Thayer, is also a Parks Department employee (READ: Adminstrator for all north Brooklyn parks and in this capacity can determine how money is spent) is one of said “groups” this strikes me as a conflict of interest.

3. I find it disturbing that these funds may very well be used for parks projects the city has already promised— and failed— to fund. In other words, this strikes me as a “bail out”. Why should the state be brought in the redress our fair city’s inability— or unwillingness— to keep its promises? Especially in regards to the ones made during the north Brooklyn 2005 re-zone? Just a thought.

UPDATE: I have taken the survey. Aside from finding it curious that Cooper Park and Grand Ferry Park excluded (I mentioned them— I really like Grand Ferry and Cooper— the latter’s crappers are among the best to be found hereabouts. What’s more, Cooper Park is located closer to the Shit Tits than East River or Gantry State Park. Why the exclusion?) I found question #6 of particular interest:

What would you like to do at public parks that you cannot do now?

Reader Contribution Du Jour: Over The Rainbow

These stunning images (one of which features one of yours trulys favorite things!) come courtesy of Beebe, who writes:

I’m a long-time reader, first time emailer. I’m an Astoria resident with a studio in the very southern part of LIC. So I frequently look across the water to Greenpoint. Late this afternoon, I shot a rainbow sprouting over the Shit Tits. (I apologize for not knowing the name of the sewage processing plant and relying on such crude slang.) It’s yours to use as you see fit… I’m also attaching a photo of tonight’s fantastic sunset. Just in case.

Keep up the shitty (i.e. good!) work?

Thanks for the images— and the kind words.

Miss Heather

P.S.: Oh yeah, it’s officially called The Newtown Creek Waste Treatment Facility. But I stick with Shit Tits. It rolls off the tongue more elegantly.
