From The New York Shitty Inbox: La Taverna Gets DOH’ed?

latavernaTHUMBIt’s proving to be a HOPPIN’ day at the New York Shitty inbox. Charles writes:

Need to snap a shot, but did you see La Taverna, the italian place at Java and Manhattan, was closed as per order of the health and mental hygiene dept? Ack!

I did a little poking around the New York City Health Department’s inspection records and the latest inspection dated from May— and La Taverna passed with flying colors. This certainly makes one wonder what happened. If you have the scoop please share via comments. Inquiring Greenpointers want to know!

UPDATE, 3:45 p.m.: I did a walk-by. Whatever happened it appears to have been trivial because La Taverna will be open as of 5:00 p.m. this evening!

Greenpoint Fashion Watch: A Moment of Greenpoint Gratitude

Chile relleno preparation (as practiced by yours truly, anyway) is a rather extensive process*. When I reach the “halfway” point I take a break. This time around was no exception: to this end I took a walk. As I was strolling our fair ‘nabe’s streets I thought about the numerous things I have to be grateful for: having good friends, wonderful neighbors, a husband who tolerates my admittedly eccentric behavior and manifold obsessions; a roof over my head, a relatively well-behaved (and occasionally downright loving) pride of felines and a job whose nature I not only enjoy, but comes with co-workers who render those not-so-pleasurable moments into fun ones.

Above all I am grateful to live in the best damned place on earth: Greenpoint, Brooklyn U.S.A. The Garden Spot of the Universe is home to such Heatherian favorites as the Shit Tits, the Newtown Creek Nature Walk, McGuinness Boulevard, West Street (what’s left of it, anyway), 218 Beadel Street (the house and person who lives in it— both are wonderful) and the old Russian Peoples Home sign on Clay Street (to name a very few). It is also home to some of the most charming, witty, intelligent and kindhearted people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I consider it an honor to call these people, my fellow Greenpointers, neighbors.

And, but hardly least, there is this gentleman who I spied in front of La Taverna today. There is so much fashion fabulousness going on here I am not even going to attempt deconstructing it. What’s more, I need to get back to cooking!

More later.

*Which I will go into later. It ain’t going to be Julia Child, but hopefully you’ll enjoy the secrets to my relleno success.

OPEN: La Taverna

Last night as the Mister and I were walking down Manhattan Avenue when we noticed a buzz of activity in front of La Taverna. Upon closer inspection we learned they were having a Grand Opening $4.00 all-you-can-eat introductory buffet. Since we had eaten Italian food for lunch we passed, but I did make it a point to peruse their menu. Not only was it rather extensive (and vegetarian friendly) but the prices were incredibly reasonable (for example: the Rigatoni Arrabiata was a cool $6.75). Methinks I will wait a couple of weeks (so they can iron out the kinks) and give them a whirl. You can check out their menu by clicking here, here, here, and here.

Be advised La Taverna does not serve wine at this time. So if you want a little vino with your eats you need to bring your own.

Greenpoint Restaurant Watch: 946 Manhattan Avenue

Remember that most curious conversion I told you about last month? You know, the space that was formerly a bookstore but whose Certificate of Occupancy stated it was a funeral parlor? Well today the sign finally went up. And I have some very good news on the “culinary diversity” front!

Your eyes are not deceiving you. This eating and drinking establishment will be serving fare previously unavailable in my corner of Greenpoint.

Per the really friendly guys who erected the sign “La Taverna” will be serving “Mediterranean food”. When I queried them as to whether it would be Greek, Turkish, etc. they confessed that they did not know. Nonetheless I told them this was most welcome news because our community has too many Thai restaurants already. As you can see in the above photograph, they found this piquant observation quite amusing.

I got no word as to when this establishment will be opening its doors. However, I took a quick peek inside and the interior appears to be very close to completion. The tables, chairs, light fixtures— you name it— were all in place and the only thing I could see lacking were the customers. In other words I am going to prognosticate that La Taverna will be gracing the Garden Spot sooner rather than later!
