From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part III: A Question About Polish Bakeries

November 11, 2010 ·

This inquiry comes from a chap named Mark. He writes:

Hiya Heather,

…I have a Greenpoint question for you.  What do you think is the best bakery in the neighborhood?  I’ve been tasked with bringing a cake to my family’s Thanksgiving celebration, and thought I would try to order something from a place in the neighborhood.  Do Polish bakeries tend to take orders?  Are they usually open on Thanksgiving morning?  I realize that’s actually three questions, but if you know the answer to the first one I’d very very grateful.

WOW… where do I start? Well, I will preface by stating I that tend to stay away from sweets. There are two reasons for this:

1. I am a very, VERY picky eater (just ask my parents or the Mister).
2. Too much sugar makes yours truly bounce off the walls.

The previous disclosures having been made, I have to say my favorite bakery is Jubilatka. Advice/Tips:

  1. If they are offering apple pie, BUY IT! They do not go overboard with the sugar. The sweetness of the apples they use carries the day!
  2. Jubilatka usually rolls out a pretty nice assortment of babka this time of year. Their chocolate/ginger bread babka, as I learned last year, is pretty— and tasty!

My piece having been said (and knowing there are many great bakeries here), I am going to offer up Mark’s question to my commenters. What is your favorite Polish Bakery— and why?

Greenpoint Babka Watch: Jubilatka Is Back!

After all the rather grim news I have relayed the last few days I thought a little good news might be in order. When the Mister and I saw the brown paper go up at 940 Manhattan Avenue we expected the worst. Rest easy fellow Greenpointers, your babka needs are in very good (and improved) hands!

It’s a beautiful day in “Little Poland”!

Remember the babkaporn I featured a little over a week ago? If not, the following should jog your memory.

Today as I walked by Jubilatka Bakery I succumbed to temptation and picked up one of these bad boys for Christmas dinner. It set me back $18.00 dollars, but what the hell? We only live once.

Luca, our household capo, was nonplussed with my newly-acquired chocolate gingerbread creation. Mind you Luca also grunts, snorts, farts and licks his ass on occasion. While a loving companion, a gourmand Luca is most decidedly not. I, on the other hand, can’t wait to give this a try. Yum!

Miscellaneous Notes on the Greenpoint Food & Drink Front

Although this is a ways off, I want to pass it along. Those of you who might have wondered what is going on at 195 Nassau Avenue (as seen above), today I got the scoop! Cody Utzman, the man behind Brooklyn Standard and Papasitos is going to open a wine Bar there! Cafe Royalle (as its name indicates) will be serving up fare with distinctively French twist. Cody told me that he guesstimates it will be open for business in “about two months”. That may seem like a ways off, but I assure you it will be upon us soon enough!

Lastly, I suspect I speak for a number of my fellow north ‘Pointers when I write that Jubilatka has had some downright mouth-watering cakes in their front window of late. Today I finally broke down and asked about them. Here’s the deal:

cakelist

  1. This powdered sugar spritzed castle is chocolate brownie/ginger bread cake.
  2. This is conventional babka with a topping of assorted fruit.
  3. These are chocolate babka.

All of the previous cost a measly $12.00. Speaking as someone who is not especially talented when it comes to making baked goods, I know where I will be buying my Christmas dessert this year!
