Happy April Fool’s Day From New York Shitty!
I can think of no better way to kick off today’s selection of absurd New York Shitty goodness than this masterfully executed (and most assuredly illegal) seven point turn* from Huron onto Franklin Street Whoever you are, truck drivin’ man, thank you. Watching your herculean effort to round this corner gave the Department of Sanitation employee idling on Huron Street (in the correct direction) and I a much needed laugh.

Greenpoint Photos Du Jour: Along The Waterfront
Filed under: Greenpoint Magic
Late Sunday afternoon the Mister and I braved the blustery weather to explore some of north Greenpoint’s waterfront. Our persistence paid off: the fog provided a certain “mood” which rendered our experience thoroughly enjoyable (if a wee bit chilly). Follows is a Flickr slide show I created featuring my favorite shots. Enjoy!

Post Blizzard Wrap-up Part II: A Walk Around The Garden Spot
Filed under: Greenpoint Magic
As promised here is a slide show featuring highlights from my jaunt around Brooklyn’s one and only 11222 yesterday. Enjoy!
Inasmuch as I gripe about the snow I have to admit it has does have its charm— as does Greenpoint!

Felines Lost & Found
I have a couple of pet-related items to relay to you. In the interest of brevity (it’s been a long day) I have decided to put them in one quick and easy post. Here it goes.
LOST
First up, Mingus the cat has gone MIA. I’m not too certain where his home is but this flier hails from Huron Street. So all of you who live in the general area keep an eye out for this little fella. It goes without saying (but I’m to say it anyway) if you have seen him or know of his whereabouts please contact his owner at the above telephone number. Thanks!
FOUND
This item comes courtesy of Laura Hofmann. She writes:
This cat showed up today on our 5th floor fire escape… He wondered onto a brick gargoyle on the front of the building. Fortunately, my son was able to reach him and rescue him. We’ve knocked on many doors in our apt building. Looks like he doesn’t belong to anyone here. The cat has a purple collar on it.

Greenpoint Photo Du Jour: The Party’s Over
Filed under: Greenpoint Magic
This piquant and very timely message hails from Huron between West Street and the waterfront (the lot slated to sport a 39 story condominium complex courtesy of the genius who brought us the Oro condominiums in Downtown Brooklyn). To see more nifty pix from my walk around the neighborhood yesterday point and click your way to my flickr set.

Winter Wonderland!

If there’s one time Greenpoint really shines it is when it is has a nice dusting of snow. For this reason I am going to share with you some photographs I took of yesterday’s snowstorm. Enjoy!
Be sure to check out the neat pix Rowan5 took of Bushwick inlet as well. They can be found in the New York Shitty photo pool. They’re worth the point and click!

Urban Artifacts Du Jour: Greenpoint Vs. The Southside
Anyone who lives in North Brooklyn will tell you its streets are a treasure trove of interesting stuff. Just take this splendid example from Huron Street.
No, I am not talking about the discarded copy of Harlan Coben’s Gone For Good my intrepid Greenpointers. It is of the wooden box I write!
I didn’t know our fair city did curbside recycling for ordnance. Before you grab your respective telephones and get your Department of Homeland Security on dear readers be advised that there were no explosive projectiles in this container: only a few scraps from a metal frame.
Alas, there will be no revolution in the Garden Spot. Or it has already begun. In which case I suppose there really isn’t much we can do about it except wait for Big Bertha to be rolled out by the Greenpoint People’s Liberation Army (or some similarly guerilla-ish sounding movement).
Greenpoint never ceases to amaze me with its little surprises. After finding the above item I (foolishly) thought to myself:
It’s not going to get any more interesting than this.
Then I sojourned down to South 3rd Street and was proven wrong. Very wrong.
Even though this smiling little fella was unceremoniously crammed into a bucket of grout I knew what laid before me.
Behold the Southside inflatable schlong! In keeping with my mission to save the world’s (or at least Brooklyn’s) stray adult novelty population* I promptly snatched this little critter up and (being all too aware of the possible risk of bringing some unwanted friends home) I (as I have done with all penises I have brought home before) subjected him to a rigorous inspection. He passed with flying colors and we headed home.
A rather elderly Orthodox gentleman didn’t seem to be very pleased when I hopped on board with my new, 24″ (deflated— but circumsized!) friend. But that’s what I love about America; he can worship in the manner his conscious suits him without fear of persecution and I can ride the B61 with an inflatable penis.
I’m not too sure what I am going to do with my new penis other than give him a thorough soaking in a solution of 3 parts water and one part Clorox. After which I will probably introduce him to the “the girls“. Slowly. I suspect they’ll get along smashingly.

Life In Dangertown
On Thanksgiving Day of this year I wrote:
What constituted “Dangertown†here in 11222, you ask? I’m saving that for an extra juicy post!
Well, that time has come.
Although the above image did not accompany the following article from the July 18, 1886 edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle I felt it illustrated perfectly the grinding poverty that was once commonplace in the fair burgh we call home. Believe it or not this see-saw was considered plush by contemporary accounts. Greenpoint at the turn of the century was rife with crime, filth and gangs with colorful noms de guerre such as the “Dangertown Slobs”, “Jolly Four”, “Sons of Rest” and the “Undertakers”. The latter most moniker is my personal favorite, as the members purportedly called themselves as such because they completed everything they undertook —but make no mistake about it: the young Republican’s Glee Club these gentlemen most decidedly were NOT.
Two things haven’t changed over the last 124 years in Greenpoint; the watering holes are still quite plentiful and there’s plenty of hideous architecture to go around.* You can read the rest of this article about “Dangertown” (and its numerous shenanigans) by clicking here.
