Greenpoint Photos Du Jour: DISGRACE
Filed under: 11222, Bloomblight, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
These photographs (which document the state of advanced decay and neglect to be found West Street between Green and Kent) were taken today, October 13, at around 2:30 p.m. I think they speak for themselves. This is inexcusable.

TOMORROW: Fall Cleanout

Hey Miss Heather,
I’m a big fan of your blog. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been talking with friends in the neighborhood about local goings-on and someone will say “Oh yeah, I read about that on NewYorkShitty!”
Anyway, thought I would drop you a line to let you know that my neighbors and I are banding together to create a stoop sale this Saturday, the 26th, at 111 Huron Street (between Franklin and Manhattan). Items up for grabs include men’s and women’s clothing, bags, books, a television, CDs, and other surprises. We’ll be kicking things off at noon. Between this and the other stoop sales that will be taking place for the Kent Street Festival, it should be a good weekend for bargain hunters in Greenpoint. I’ve attached a copy of our flyer in case you should feel moved to post something on your blog.
Thanks and keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words, Adam. They are greatly appreciated. I look forward to seeing what “surprises” you and yours have in store for us tomorrow!

New York Shitty Day Ender: The Good Neighbor Policy
This week I was pleasantly surprised to find an email from the owner of 131 Huron Street (AKA: neighbor to the Viridian’s backend) in my inbox. He writes:
Thought you could feature the other side[huron st] of 110 green street project [viridian] on your blog. check it out it looks like people park [bums empty bottles and guitars]
hope your well
Larry
I have, in fact, done just this. However, today I did a walk by. I didn’t find any homeless people but the garbage was plentiful, the workers were kind enough to hoot and holler at me (thanks guys) and I found this…
and this.
You have some nerve to park here all dia long. You deserve a double summons. You are lucky the police isn’t doing there job. PRIVATE DRIVEWAY. Next time we’ll make sure you get one. (NO RESPECT FOR PRIVATE PROPERTY)
The rebuttal can be found on the back:
Where is William F. Buckley when you need him? More importantly: why can’t ball point pens come with a grammar and spellcheck function?!?
Granted, painting lines of demarcation on the street is illegal. Then again so is blocking someone’s driveway. A garage is clearly visible in the background, therefore it can be deduced this is an active driveway. This is not rocket science. It is yet another example of how little regard— if not outright contempt— the folks at the Viridian have for their neighbors. It’s been that way pretty much from day one so I guess it would be unreasonable to expect better conduct on their part now.

TODAY: Stoop Sale Selections

For those of you who are staying home this holiday weekend (and want to do a little shopping on the cheap) here are a few stoop sales to consider.
150 Milton Street
Although the prospect of parsing through used (?) bathing suits skeeves me out to no end books and CDs are always on my shopping list. Especially if they’re cheap!
Yard Sale #1
September 5 & 6, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
150 Milton Street
Brooklyn, New York 11222
208 Huron Street
This one is for early risers only. Given that the wares advertised are for (small) children those of you who might be interested will probably be up and about anyway.
Yard Sale #2
September 5 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
208 Huron Street
Brooklyn, New York 11222
And last— but hardly least— today is the last day of this loft sale in Williamsburg.
Happy bargain hunting!

11222 Theft Alert!
Filed under: 11222, Criminal Activity, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
Although I prefer to refrain from blogging at the junk shop (the above image of the company computer’s keyboard should explain why) this just came to my attention and I wanted to pass it along ASAP. Apparently a gentleman’s car (which was parked West and Huron Street) was broken into (the lock was picked) this morning. Among the items stolen were (men’s) hockey gear: skates and a pair of mitts. These were contained in a blue plastic bag.
If anyone, dear readers, attempts to sell you anything fitting this description (presumably on the street or at one of our local parks) please bear in mind they may very well stolen property.
Thanks!

New York Shitty Day Ender: Danny R.I.P.
As I mentioned previously earlier today the Mister and I visited the Newtown Creek Nature Walk. When we left we decided to walk down Provost Street— and in so doing stumbled upon the site of Greenpoint’s latest auto accident.
It was not easy to miss, as Danny’s friends and loved ones have erected a sizable, heartfelt memorial to his memory. In fact, two women were busy tidying it up when we walked by. I refrained from taking photographs out of respect for their privacy. Nonetheless I found the remnants of this terrible— and possibly preventable— end of a youth man’s life incredibly disquieting.
Aside from part of a respirator laying in the tree pit, part of a windshield and discarded medical equipment laid on the sidewalk. These grotesques can be found at the intersection of Provost and Huron Street lest anyone cares to see them— but I can think of very few people who would.
It should also be noted that this was not the first serious auto accident to come to pass at this intersection this year. As some of you might recall, there was an incident there back in June. That one involved a police pursuit.
In any case, my heartfelt condolences go out to Danny’s friends and family. Their tremendous outpouring of grief at the site of his death bears testament to how very much Danny was loved in life. May he rest in peace.
