Greenpoint Photo Du Jour: Question Of The Day
Have you ever asked yourself what is the difference between Greenpoint and the Ninth Ward of New Orleans other than, say, the latter was pulverized by a cataclysmic force of nature? If so, today I learned the answer.
According to a scouting agent for HBO, apparently nothing.

P.S.: I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when I saw this.
UPDATE, March 11, 2010: It has been brought to my attention by several folks that Treme will be shooting footage in Greenpoint that will actually depict New York City. I know, I know. I’m just as surprised as you are. Especially in light of the fact a substantial part our fair nabe’s waterfront has been given a make-over so as to imitate Atlantic City and there are in fact parts of Greenpoint that look like they have been on the business end of the wrath of god. LAST GASP: Socks Has Been Found!
Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
Okay, I was going to call it an early night— but then I received this email. It is too cool NOT to pass along ASAP. Remember a cat by the name of Socks whose flier I posted yesterday? Well, he’s safe and sound at home! His person, a lady named Genia, recounts how this wonderful happening came to pass:
Hi Miss Heather:
It was my lost cat flyer that you posted on your blog. I wanted to thank you so much because, nothing short of a miracle, it worked! The persons who found Socks, back on Feb. 13, about ten blocks away on Humboldt, saw the photo on your blog today, and called me and sent a pic of Socks, and indeed it was him. A young Polish woman, named Adriana and her family, took him in two days after he was missing. She said he was sitting at the doorstep to her building, looking cold and sad, as if he was waiting to be let in. Bless the people of Greenpoint who look after the animals in the neighborhood. I am so relieved to know that he was well taken care of for these past three weeks just when the weather was so brutal. So some happy news due to your championing of local causes, big and small.
All best, Genia Gould, Williamsburg Greenpoint News + Arts
Thanks for sharing this Genia. It made my day!

Reader Contribution Du Jour: Still Works!
This item comes courtesy of Katie Sokoler. Curiously enough, I have been informed by Ms. Sokoler this conifer (which hails from Humboldt Street) still has no takers. Hmm…

‘Tis The Season: 648 Humboldt Street
Since the afternoon proved to be sunny— if a bit brisk— I decided to go out for a walk. And in so doing I spied a number of homeowners busy hanging garlands, Christmas lights and other holiday mirth on their homes. When I finally reached my destination, 648 Humboldt Street (which some of you might recall are no slouches in the Halloween decoration department), I was pleased to find their holiday cheer in full swing.
Carousels, ferris wheels, candy canes, lollipops, ginger bread people and a nativity with Mr. and Mrs Claus presiding over the mirthmaking on the second floor.
All in all it is quite an impressive sight— but photographs don’t quite do it justice. Follows is a little video footage to help you appreciate the feast of the five senses that is 648 Humboldt. Enjoy!
I want to give a New York Shitty shout-out to the peeps of 648 Humboldt Street for this, their best Christmas display ever! In addition I would like to tender my heartfelt condolences to the residents of 646 and 650 Humboldt; I don’t think I could handle listening to that Christmas music ALL DAY.
