I have been meaning to touch upon the subject of “ironic” t-shirt wearing for sometime. This is because it is becoming much more commonplace on Manhattan Avenue. First it was a 20-something with a great many facial piercings wearing a shirt which read “I was country when country wasn’t cool.” Fail. Then a fellow who works at a bodega on my block (which does an impressive amount of business selling Baltika malt liquor) wearing a shirt “You are pretty because I am drunk” That one I give two enthusiastic thumbs up. This morning it was a young lady sporting a shirt which read “Titties and Beer”. No just no, but hell no on that one. Then came the piece de resistance: this.
As you can see this fellow is blind. I am not sure how a I “heart” NY shirt came into his possession, but clearly it has. The cup he is using (so as to solicit change) is from the Starbucks across the street. Is this funny? Only in a certain “gallows humor” kind of way. If I had to pick one photo to exemplify the dismal legacy that was our former mayor’s (especially in terms of homelessness) the first one would be it. In any case,we are rapidly approaching the time of year when many of our less fortunate neighbors, having consumed spirits, feel the ill effects of the heat. If you see something along these lines, gentle readers, say something to 311. Have a heart…
From The New York Shitty Inbox: Homeless At The House Of Suds

Laura (who took the above-depicted photos today, January 1st) writes:
Hi Heather!
Mike went across the street to the Bodega and came across a homeless guy passed out in the cold in the doorway of House of Suds. He couldn’t quite bend to help the guy. Mike was astonished that other people were out on the street and hadn’t called for help. After all it’s 26 degrees out there. He hurried upstairs to call 911. We heard the ambulance in a matter of moments, but Mike also used some key words. He said “I don’t want to see another one of these homeless guys dead in this precinct.” And then whatever was asked, he said “94th”.
Well said. Yes, the Bloomberg era may be over— but we will be dealing with the consequences of it for some time. Let’s face facts: our former Mayor’s “record” when it comes to the issue of homelessness is dismal. Thus it has been and will continue to be our responsibility as citizens to look out for those who may not be able to look out for themselves. If you see someone who may be unconscious on our city’s streets— especially now that winter (replete with storm warnings) is upon us— call 911. We have already had one homeless person die of hypothermia in this community so far. This is one too many.

It would appear 161 Huron Street— including its trash can container— has become ad hoc sleeping quarters for our local homeless population.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Coming At You From WNYC Transmitter Park
A Greenpoint resident and parks patron we’ll call “N” writes:
Ok. Here’s shocking news for you. Transmitter park has a proper resident.
Au contraire. I’d hazard to guess these are two French cinema enthusiasts staking out their seats for August’s film festival.
In all seriousness folks, am I the only person who finds a community which has a chronic addiction and therefore homeless problem— which is more often than not manifest in our public spaces being host to a French film festival a mite bit absurd? Please tell me I am not.
New York Shitty Day Ender: India Street
Those of you who are bemoaning the lack of a sweetheart this Valentine’s Day just remember you are, in all probability, loved by someone. It might be a brother, a sister, a parent, but you are loved nonetheless. I am certain this fellow is (was?) loved by someone, but I doubt he will be fretting over eating a box of chocolates or where to have a prix fix dinner this evening. He’ll simply be happy to have something to eat and perhaps a safe place to sleep tonight. Why not pass on the supper, champagne and sweets and send some much-needed love your neighbor’s direction today?
