Greenburg Photo Du Jour: McCarren Park

If there is one photo that best summarizes the homeless problem in this park— and north Brooklyn in general— this is it. This fellow was the source of considerable curiosity and bemused interest by parks and pool patrons as I walked by this afternoon. Concerned he might be susceptible to— if not presently experiencing— heat exhaustion/stroke, I spoke to the Parks staff at the (nearby) field house. In closing, I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude for securing the medical attention this man so clearly needed. Thanks guys (and gals)!
Reader Contribution du Jour: McGolrick Park
Per the tipster who sent me the above image:
(Taken) 4/21, but he was there till 4/22 as garbage piled up around him. This is just an impossible, totally depressing situation. And personally, as someone who grew up in a house where substance abuse was present, it makes me relive the anxiety and sadness I couldn’t wait to get away from – that’s why I’m so sensitive to it, and why I HATE that my kids are exposed to it…

As taken today, January 11th, 2012. Closing on a somewhat related note ABC news recently did a feature regarding the proposed homeless assessment center at 400 McGuinness Boulevard. You can view this item by clicking here.

Question Of The Day
Filed under: 11211, 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn
Which of the following do you find more troubling north Brooklyn park patrons?
1. A man sleeping in an idling car and homeless encampment replete with a cafe umbrella:
2. Or this.
Well, apparently if you are the New York City Parks Department (or perhaps a concerned parks-goer) the answer is #2 (a word).
The Vagina Tree
So I glad I knew you in your fullest state <3
Observation: If vaginas did not serve some positive, pleasing function the person(s) responsible for obliterating it from the previously depicted plaque would not be around in the first place. Regardless, I find it fascinating— especially in light of the manifold number of “issues” with our parks*— that this person thought a mere word merited such attention/censorship. Just a thought.
*Lack of general maintenance/upkeep. Hence why I embarked upon the “No Toilet Left Behind Project” and why there is a Vagina “stump” gracing said park in the first place. The powers-that-be have neither the will nor the wherewithal to replace the previous or remove the latter. This would require concepts such as “planning” and WORK.

Chris Arnade (who took the above photograph) writes:
In the interstate jumble where the Bruckner, Major Deegan, and Robert F Kennedy Bridge come together, there is a middle triangle, filled with construction detritus, that also houses a few homeless people. James “Dragon” lives under an exit ramp with his cat Mimi, a hard to access space that he keeps tidy. He earns money collecting cans and bottles. I asked him if he needed anything, he asked for some winter blankets, which I hope to bring next time.

Even the homeless get evicted. In the parking lot (behind Capital One bank!) on Lorimer and Calyer St. Greenpoint.

This second portrait was taken by Chris Arnade, who writes:
Eugene was panhandling and drinking outside of a Bodega. Homeless, he sleeps either inside the Bodega or in a shelter. He only drinks beer, “never having done any of that other stuff.” The owner of the store tells me he would “trust Eugene with his life, he is the most loyal man I know.” When I asked Eugene about the crown, he said its to show the world that his parents are with him, souls who live in his heart.
