Greenpoint Photos Du Jour: Seasons’ Greetings

The Noble nys

Those of you who need a pick-me-up on this dreary post-election day would be well served to swing by 133 Noble Street.

Special thanks goes out to autovac for contributing this photo to my photo pool. It was the nudge I needed to swing by and behold this bit of Greenpoint glory with my own eyes. You should too!

As All Hallow’s Eve draws closer Greenpoint keeps getting more and more ghoulish (like this goose I found on Noble Street). Follows are some highlights from my sojourn around the neighborhood today. Enjoy!

648 Humboldt Street didn’t disappoint. However, I am concerned about the absence of the demonic clowns. They’re my favorite (after the Humboldt Hurler). But we have thirteen days to go…

Williamsburg Photo Du Jour: Frost Street Gets In The Halloween Spirit!

Erma (the woman behind this fabulous door which I posted back in August) writes:

first i wanna thank you for posting our door i wanted to know as we change the door if you were gonna post it. this way i can email you when we change it rather than leaving a comment on the website. alot of people come to the house to look at the door cause they saw it on your website.

I finally had the time to swing by today. It’s really neat!

I realize the glare makes these images somewhat difficult to discern. Go to 180 Frost Street and see it for yourself. You will not be disappointed!

BEWARE2

Don’t less this pup’s stern expression fool you: he is a great big cream puff! After taking the above picture he licked the bejeezus out of my hand— with his owner’s permission, of course. One should never, ever pet a dog without his “person” being present!

Greenpoint Halloween Watch: It Has Begun!

October has found its way to the Garden Spot. Since the weather was absolutely stunning I decided to table the blog and go for a walk. On a lark I decided to swing by my favorite house on Humboldt Street to see if they have commenced work on this year’s Halloween extravaganza. For those of you who are not in the know this is yours truly’s favorite holiday of the year.

They have! What’s more, I wasn’t the only person to notice that something very exciting is going on at 648 Humboldt Street.

Female passerby: Wow, this wasn’t here yesterday.
Me: Yup, and they’re just getting started.
F.P.: Yesterday I saw an inflatable ghost and I said to him (pointing to male companion) “Wow, a Halloween yard”! He said, “That isn’t a Halloween yard. I’ll show you a Halloween yard!”
Me: These people go all out. Wait until they bring out the guy who vomits up blood. He’s my favorite.
F.P.: Do they do this kind of thing for Christmas?
Me: Yeah, but…
F.P.: It is not as good?
Me: It’s good alright. They make it look like a ginger bread house and have a full-sized Santa and Mrs. Claus. It’s cute. But I don’t like cute. It like (pointing to ghouls on the second floor) this.

To refresh your memory dear, readers, as to the glory of that is 648 Humboldt Street on All Hallow’s Eve I have resurrected a slide show of last year’s masterpiece. Enjoy!

I have much more Halloween goodness from the Garden Spot to share— so stay tuned!

Halloween Photos du Jour: Finally!

After getting off to late start I am pleased to announce that 97 Russell Street is getting down to some serious Halloween business! What’s more I got to meet the woman behind some of this madness (she was waiting for her husband to arrive with a lift so they could hoist a ghost onto their tree) and get the 411 as to what is going on.

Apparently the reason they got off to a late start this year (the left-hand side of the yard was still incomplete as of today) was because she went on a trip to Egypt (!) and her hubby didn’t where she had stashed all the Halloween goodness!

Once the aerosol foam insulation dries on this bad boy he’ll be brandishing a meat cleaver! YAY!

This cute little witch holds court with her retinue of ghosts above the front door…

right next to this rather nasty looking fella.

Scaryass clown? Check.

Wraith and an organ? Check.

These skulls on a pike come from Long Island!

I can hardly wait to see what this looks like once they fire up the smoke machine. (YES, they’re going to have one!)

Last week I learned from their neighbors over on Humboldt that there is some long-standing friendly competition between brains behind the Humboldt Hurler and the folks at 97 Russell. As a matter of fact, their properties abut each other —enabling them to keep careful track of each others progress. It’s all in good fun though. The incredibly kind woman at 97 Russell told me today with a hint of pride that their house and 648 Humboldt were featured in the New York Daily News last year. This came to pass because her daughter happens to be a reporter for this publication.

Now that’s what I call an inside scoop!
