Notes From The Community Council Meeting

Although not as well attended as February’s meeting last night’s 94th Precinct Community Council Q & A session once again proved to be full house. As was the case last month the Production Lounge (and the numerous quality of life issues it has posed for its neighbors) was the primary— but not necessarily exclusive— topic of the evening. Follows are a few other points/factoids I found of interest:

  1. Burglaries and grand larceny are up from last year.
  2. There is one burglar at large whose activity has increased in the last two weeks. His M.O. is to strike during business hours. He is particularly interested in lap top computers.
  3. Robbery and felony assaults are down.
  4. There are 68 bars in the 94th Precinct.

Something I observed at this meeting which I found interesting was the very visible presence of local business owners. Establishments such as the Shayz Lounge( whose owner, an incredibly cute man named Seamus— who some might remember had the front window of his bar punched in last month— brought up the subject of local bar owners putting their heads together regarding some of the problems eating and drinking establishments have recently posed for the community of late), the Black Rabbit, Dalaga and Papasitos, were among those presence. Conversely, it should be noted that no one from the Production Lounge was present at this meeting.

On that note and without further ado follow are some selections from the evening’s meeting. For the sake of brevity (there was much redundancy with both the questions posed by the attendees and answers tendered by Deputy Inspector Fulton) and my own sanity I have done a great deal of editing so please consider these movies as highlights or “Cliff Notes” of what came to pass. On with the show!

SEGMENT 1: This primarily deals with minutes from the previous meeting and Deputy Inspector Fulton giving us a rundown of current crime trends.

SEGMENT 2: In this segment D.I. Fulton gives us more information regarding the two recent homicides in Greenpoint as well as a drunk driving fatality. He begins to take questions. Not surprisingly it kicks off with neighbors of the Production Lounge airing their frustration.

SEGMENT 3: The owner of Shayz Lounge speaks & much ado about the Production Lounge.

SEGMENT 4: Mixed bag: more ado about the Production Lounge, car break-ins and a bartendress raises her concern about a uptick in muggings at the Bedford Avenue stop of the L.

In conclusion I suppose what I found most compelling was that a woman present finally mustered the nerve to say what was undoubtedly on the minds of a great many people in the room.

I can think of no better way to kick off this— one of New York City’s most beloved days of the year— than with a few shots of what is without argument the most festive house in Greenpoint. It hails from Apollo Street and, well, it has to be seen to be believed. Enjoy!

Adoptable Cutie Video Du Jour: Heath Lets Loose

Yesterday I had the pleasure of finally checking out Empty Cages Collective’s new digs right here in Greenpoint. I have to say it is a significant improvement over their older space. Among other things the split level layout enables them to let their Feline Leukemia positive friends roam about without the risk of cross-infecting their non-Leukemia roommates. Among the kitties getting a little exercise this Sunday afternoon was a kitten named Heath. As you will see he found my camera strap of the utmost interest. Enjoy!

For more information about this little fella (who isn’t much of a cuddler but clearly loves to play) check out Empty Cages Collective’s Petfinder page. Otherwise you can see more footage of Heath’s bunkmates (including a couple of roosters that were recently rescued from a cockfighting ring) point and click your way over to my newly created Flickr set.

Magic’s magic is ummmm… bankrupt!?

Not to wish ill, but let us be reasonable about the reality of where we live and what it can (should?) house.

Maybe they’ll make a skate park for the youth in the drained pool… and turn the sauna into a Public Russian (Polish) Bath House?

Among the numerous ideas my Greenpoint think tank came up with as to what to do with this Modernist monolith (including a scenario which can only be described as post-Apocalyptic class warfare) I really liked the idea of having the pool utilized as a public skateboarding park. The sad fact is the parks in my fair burgh are abysmal. The only thing worse in Greenpoint are arguably the drivers. When I see a child skateboarding on the street I get worried.

Children* should be able to have safe facilities where they can get a little exercise. It is my belief that being physically active allows kids (of all ages) to blow off steam and consequently keeps them out of trouble (and Miss Heather’s hair). Needless to say when I noticed two teenagers opening the front door of the Viridian (as seen above) shoving a prepubescent boy inside and then holding it shut (thus encasing a Greenpoint young ‘un in luxurious captivity) I found it most interesting. In fact, I immediately pulled out my camera to document the most unorthodox use of a former condominium building I have seen to date.

I know Magic Johnson (a dedicated advocate of physical fitness/paid spokesman for Aetna) would be most pleased to know his monument to progress on Green Street is helping our children stay physically active and have a little fun to boot. Perhaps the new sales strategy for 110 Green Street should be…

The Viridian: The Affordable Choice for Luxurious Male Bonding/Hazing Since 2009.

Brouwerij Lane is open for business!

growlers-for-ten-bucksthumbWhile the Mister was in awe of the wonderful selection of suds they have on tap I spoke to the store’s Manager. Here’s the scoop:

1. “Growlers” can be had for a $5.00 deposit.

2. (Re)fills of beer can be had for $10.00 bucks a pop. To see the selection of beer they have on tap click here.

3. Personalized six packs of beer (or “Pixs of Six”) are in the offering. In other words, you can mix and match your beer to your personal taste from freezers which are sorts by price. These range from $2.00 – $3.00 per bottle up to $8.00 per bottle.

4. No mention whatsoever was made of massages so I guess we Greenpointers will have DIY it.

5. Brouwerji Lane’s official Grand Opening will be Saturday, March 21, from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. Goulash, ‘wurst and a beer tasting will be in the offering!

Greenpoint Fashion Watch: The Aviator

I have lived in Greenpoint for over nine years now. It certainly doesn’t feel like I have lived here the better part of a decade but this in fact the case. I guess time flies when you’re having fun. As time has gone by I have witnessed a number of highly unusual things in my neighborhood of choice. This includes (but by no means is limitied to):

  1. Watching an old Polish woman drop her underwear and go to the bathroom at a temporary stop of the B43 bus.
  2. Having as a neighbor a woman who wore a sleeping bag wrapped around her head like a turban.
  3. Finding a man passed out cold on the stairs leading up to his stoop at 2:00 a.m. in the morning. His car keys were still in his hand but someone had seen fit to steal his shoes.
  4. Jessica.
  5. Learning that a one armed man is one of the junk shops most ingenious shoplifters: he even succeeded in stealing a pair of shoes once. (Think about this one for a moment.)
  6. And of course there was the legally blind guy who wanted me to “model” for some “pin up” photographs.

Suffice it to say the Garden Spot of the Universe had (and still has) some highly unusual people. What would probably merit a 911 call in Brooklyn Heights would not get some much as second glance here. Have I become jaded? This is a distinct possibility. However I know something (or someone) special when I see it. Which brings me to this guy.

theaviator

I apologize for the poor quality of this photograph. The truth of the matter is I was in awe at the sheer sublimity of what the Greenpoint gods had seen fit to send my direction. I have christened this chap “The Aviator” and he is too fucking amazing for words.

aviatordeconstructed

I quietly (but very excitedly) stalked this man until he stopped to pause in front of a liquor store. I got up the nerve to speak with him. I mean, how often do you see a guy walking down the street who  is a dead ringer for one of the frogmen from the movie Delicatessen? Don’t everyone answer at once.

Where did you get those goggles? They are fucking amazing.

I asked. To wit he replied:

I really like this absinthe fountain. Every time I try my prepare it at home I just don’t get it right.

Why don’t you go inside and ask about it? I am certain he will sell it to you.

I replied.

Oh, he is selling them. I like that because I won’t have to order one.

And with that remark he went on his way.

InFUCKINGcredible.

Yet another “Gourmet Deli” rears it’s ugly head in Greenpoint… this one on the corner of Nassau and Leonard.  Obviously, whoever wrote the copy for the awning went to NYC public schools.  Sorry for the crappy pic… all I had was my iphone.

I don’t know about you but I don’t think the fact this was shot from a cell phone diminishes this item’s Greenpoint glory one bit. Great catch Jeff!
