Syrup of figs

Those of you who love vintage/faded advertisements take note: one of the finest examples our city has to offer, the Syrup of Figs ad at 96 Greenpoint Avenue (as seen above), will not be with us much longer. Follows is why:

a four story, eight family apartment building is slated to “move in” next door. Those of you who have always wanted to revisit and/or photograph this gem but never got around to it the time is now. Once the plywood fence of death goes up (and it has) the clock is ticking….

Welcome To Greenpoint

As taken today, September 29, 2013 one block away from the India Street Pier.

Thought of the day: if the leaders of our community want to attract tourists, perhaps they should crackdown on speculators/developers who do not maintain their properties, illegally occupy the sidewalk and/or street with their “accoutrements”*, etc.? Is it just me or are our electeds sort of missing the forest for the trees here?

*This a nice way of saying shit.

Greenpoint Photo Du Jour: Sto Lat!

josef

It has been awhile since I have seen Josef. So much so I was beginning to get worried. Thus you can imagine my delight when I saw him this afternoon. The reason for the sombrero? Very simple: today is his birthday. Upon hearing this news, I told him “Sto Lat”.  Impressed, he gave me a candle. He admonished me that when I die I was to light it, leave it on my grave and he’d come visit me.

This one’s for you, Josef!

Hi,

This cat followed me home late last night and wouldn’t leave. It’s very friendly but was very hungry and dirty. It doesn’t have a collar only an old flee collar. It’s currently hanging out in our back courtyard with food and water. Would you mind posting it on your blog in case it’s owner is looking for it? Please don’t post my email address! The cat was spotted near Kent St and McGuinness when it started following me.

Thanks!

Thought you may be interested in this MOOC. It’s a course titled “introduction to environmental law and policy”. It’s already started but you can still enroll.
Feel free to spread the word about this course.

A fellow we’ll call “B” writes:

Not sure if you’ll find this interesting. A younger citizen on our block (Manhattan + McGuinness) has angered an older citizen with his scooter-based junk pile / roving artwork.

The back and forth is hard to read in the photo. It reads, “This is not a bike rack. You are not a resident at this building. Any damage to your bike is at your own risk.”

Response: “Of course. This is a public space, meaning a space for the public. So I am not sure what the problem is. Anyone who would do damage, I feel really bad for and sincerely hope they can eventually be in the present moment + make peace with their demons.”

Enjoy.

My prognostication: this is not going to end well.
