Greenpoint Halloween Watch: Looking Good On Russell Street

Yesterday I shared the good news about 648 Humboldt Street’s Halloween decoration extravaganza. Today I will give equal time to their neighbor (and friendly competitor): 97 Russell Street.

At long last my itch for demonic clowns has been scratched!

97a

Impressive.

97b

Abandon all hope ye who enter here!

97c

NOTE: this butcher knife wielding gentleman is wearing a NYC Department of Corrections ball cap. I found this to be a tremendously amusing touch. When asked by the owner of this house why I found this so entertaining I couldn’t muster a satisfactory answer. I just do.

yamaha

The headless horseman is on the synthesizer.

97d

Satan himself is twinkling the ivories.

97e

A ghostly quartet provides the chorus.

97f

And a good time was had by all— even the rats got into the act!

I want to give a New York Shitty shout-out of gratitude to the folks at 97 Russell Street for making Halloween a little more fun for all of us. Thanks guys, gals… and ghouls!

Something Neat: A Garden Grows In Greenpoint

October 27, 2009 ·

When the sun makes a much-needed appearance some people go to the beach or for a walk in the park. Not yours truly. Since the weather was lovely— if a little brisk— yesterday I took a little time to step out, stop and smell the roses— in the shadow of the Shit Tits. You see, on North Henry Street between Greenpoint and Meserole Avenue I stumbled upon (the remains of) something remarkable: a guerrilla garden.

garden1

Granted, this looks like a Wuthering Heights/Grey Gardensesque mass of overgrowth now but at one time it must have been quite beautiful.

garden2

Sunflowers abound.

But there are also for your delectation roses…

garden3

morning glories…

garden4

and tomatoes?!?

Speaking for myself I would NOT put anything in my body that was grown in the soil here— much less within eye (and nose) shot of the Eastern seaboard’s largest waste treatment plant. But to each their own. If you happen to find yourself in this area, dear readers, swing by and give this garden a look-see. It’s really neat!

P.S.: Be sure to see the remains of an ingenious ad hoc hydroponic set-up down the block while you’re there.

Greenpoint Video du Jour: Think Tanking

Remember “Think Tanking”, the brainchild of my buddy Larry da Junkman and his cohort in crime Willie? Well, they’re hitting us with a new episode— which they purport to be their worst— in which they go to Town Square’s Pumpkinfest, muse about Manhattan Avenue cougars and pay our very own Shit Tits a visit. I was present during a great deal of the filming of this opus but alas, save one line, I found my way onto the proverbial cutting room floor. Enjoy— or not!

Shortly after this was filmed I was made aware that as of Spring 2010 the Visitor’s Center at the Newtown Creek Waste Treatment Facility will officially open and regular tours of the tits will be conducted. Perhaps when this comes to pass the guys at Think Tanking will film a follow-up episode? I can only hope so!

P.S.: Those of you who are wondering about 718-STANDUP’s provenance you can see it here. I suppose Max was a supporter of Isaac Abraham for the 33rd City Council District.

648 Humboldt Street* is looking pretty good nowadays…

gptstrollermom

and by good I mean bad! Little refinements over last year’s opus (such as the inspired addition of a very 11222 stroller mom, as seen above) are not only literally stopping traffic, but as you will see it made one little girl run away shrieking. Enjoy!

I will be uploading more Halloween goodness a little later so stay tuned!

STORE, that is. R writes:

babe.

we don’t patronize the deli on the corner anymore (the one with the window above the train staircase at nassau and manhattan).  the garden store, it’s called, right?  i went in to get some juice and was followed in by a guy with a lit cigarette dangling from his filthy mouth.  the clerk was talking on the phone and the smoker asked for a pack of cigarettes.  the clerk wordlessly went to get the requested pack.

a third customer: “you shouldn’t be smoking in here.”
clerk (momentarily leaving his telephone conversation): “hey!  why you asking the customer like that? [sic]”

at this point, i pipe up, thankful that the third customer relieved me of my burning obligation to raise the issue with the shopkeep.

me: “because it’s against the law, that’s why.”
clerk: “you don’t talk to my customers in this way!”
me: “you are abetting a violation of the law and could be fined.  heavily.”
third guy: “yeah, it’s against the law, that’s why.”
offending patron (to the third guy, puzzlingly): “i’ll remember you.”

he buys his smokes and exits.  the clerk then begins to berate the third customer, finger wagging and all.  above the tumult, i announce that my deli needs will henceforth be met elsewhere.  as i leave, i hear the clerk tell the third guy to get the hell out of his store and never come back.

truly bizarre.

I have a confession to make: I have only been in this bodega maybe twice in all the years I’ve lived here. I got a creepy “vibe” from the place and haven’t been back. Is R’s experience (and my gut instincts) par for the course for this establishment? Thoughts, anyone?

This flier (which, appropriately enough, was located outside the India Street entrance to the G train) has since been removed but I feel compelled to pass it along anyway. As you have probably noticed it has quite a few takers.
