Hey Heather! I hope you are well.
I contacted you a month or so back when I was brainstorming about venues for the Greenpoint Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry benefit concert that I was proposing. Thank you again for your suggestions.
You’ve been in touch with my friend and co-organizer, Jennifer Basset so I’m not sure if she’s told you, but we decided to make the church the venue. We’ll have food and drinks in the backyard and bands and authors in the chapel. Should be ok…fingers crossed.
You offered to help with publicity before so I wanted to check in with you to see when you would like to receive info from us about the event? It’s scheduled for July 9.
Also, I don’t know if this is something you typically do or not, but I’m not having the best of luck with gathering volunteers to help on the day of the event. We still need about 15 people…do you ever post like a “Call for Volunteers” on your blog? Or do you have any suggestions about this?
Here’s the deal: I am more than happy to get the word out about events which will help our community’s neediest. To this end I asked Kat to give me a break-down of what kind of help is wonting and how she can be contacted. Here’s the rundown:
The event is from 12:00 PM (set up) until 8:00 PM plus clean up (1 hour tops) and
we are looking for people to do a couple of things (below):1. Bartender/bar back (make SIMPLE drinks, pour beer, manage ice, cups, etc.)
2. Take money at the door and stamp hands of those who’ve entered
3. General help (to hang out and do whatever is needed, i.e.; manage recycling, trash, etc.)We are asking people to commit to 2 -3 hr blocks to help and people can volunteer solo or in pairs.
Any and all who are interested in lending a hand should contact Kat via email at: kat (dot) carlton (at) gmail (dot) com
Thanks!
Miss Heather

Hi Heather,
I’m hoping that you might help get the word out about an opportunity to do food stamps outreach through the VISTA program. The candidate would serve in Greenpoint, helping to enroll people to receive Food Stamps. It’s a really great opportunity.
Duly blogged— and yes, this is a great opportunity!

Notes From the 94th Precinct Community Council Meeting
Filed under: 11211, 11222, Criminal Activity, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn
It was a pretty subdued meeting last night (and no spitting was spied by yours truly). Without further ado here is some footage with commentary.
PREFACE: a roll call was held and minutes from the previous meeting recited. Moving forward all 94th Precinct Community Council Meetings will be conducted at the Church of the Ascension:
127 Kent Street
Brooklyn, New York 11222
Click here for this year’s schedule of 94th Precinct Community Council Meetings.*
Various and sundry police officer introduced themselves:
- Lieutenant Marvin Louis, Community Affairs Officer for North Brooklyn Task Force.
- Sargent Mullen: Head Inspector for the 94th Precinct. She mentions that an elderly woman was mugged on a Sunday en route to St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. The perpetrator of this crime has been caught.
Part I: D.I. Hurson give a run-down of crime statistics.
- Crime was down 19% last month
- Car break-ins are still the biggest problem.
- Last month there were three car break-ins in as many weeks. This is good. And our multiple snow storms had something to do with it, as he notes.
- Transportation/traffic enforcement is up 37%
- The Phil Collins Parade is noted.
- An attendee brings up the robbery at the Greenpoint Reformed Church. This came to pass during Friday night Bible study and I have been told that residents of both the Greenpoint Hotel and the 3/4 house have been ruled out as suspects.
- The subject of the aforementioned mugging is resumed.
- Traffic issues are discussed.
A representative from the Organized Crime Control Bureau (which covers drugs, prostitution, gambling and automobile theft) speaks. He advises everyone in attendance that if he/she sees any of the aforementioned activity to report it at: (646) 610-6610. Your identity will remain anonymous if you so desire.
Part II: Lincoln Restler introduces himself and suggests a cooperative policing model be established in north Greenpoint.
Part III: A Greenpointer reminisces about the bad old days and expounds upon about public policing. This garners much applause.
Part IV: A couple of citizens complain about graffiti
- Interesting fact: per D.I. Hurson north Brooklyn leads the city in graffiti arrests.

I leave you this evening with this lovely image taken by Gina Herold. Otherwise to close on a totally unrelated note yours truly attended this evening’s 94th Precinct Community Council Meeting. Although it was a pretty uneventful affair I learned two things I found rather disturbing:
- The Greenpoint Reformed Church was held up during Friday Evening Bible Study.
- An elderly woman was mugged on her way to St. Stanislaus Kostka at 7:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning. The good news is (if you can call it that) is the “perp” was caught.
Naturally I shot footage and took notes. You can look forward to both of the previous soon!

LAST GASP: Babies Wanted
Ann Kansfield, the co-pastor of the Greenpoint Reformed Church, writes (in regards to my inquiry as to how Ann K 2.0 is doing):
Ak 2.0 is coming along, although I wish she’d show up in time to play Jesus in the Christmas pageant on Sunday. Maybe you could post a request saying that we are casting a baby Jesus. Applicant must be a baby. Nothing else required except showing up on Sunday at 10:30. The pageant runs from 11:00 am- noon. It’s gonna be hilarious, and very Greenpoint. Potential Jesuses (or their agents) can email me. If only our kid would have arrived sooner, she coulda been a star…
Any and all Greenpoint— or Williamsburg— babes can contact Ann via email at: kansfield (at) yahoo (dot) com. STAT.
Miss Heather
P.S.: Kids arrive when they want to. Just ask Pa Heather. I arrived exactly seven days after his desired birth date (for tax purposes). And despite being born two weeks early I have been a week late and a dollar short ever since!

This items comes from my friend at the Greenpoint Reformed Church, Ann Kansfield. She writes:
Hey Heather,I have a favor to ask…We’re starting a queer friendly youth group at the church, and we need some help getting the word out. It’s open to everyone, and I’m hoping that you might help us reach teens who are looking for such a group. I’ve attached a flier, and it’s posted on the church website at http://greenpointchurch.org/archives/224. Feel free to put a shout out that we’re an LGBT-affirming church. Also, I’m more than happy to be a supportive clergy-person to anyone who might be struggling with matters of faith.

LAST GASP: A Birthday Wish
It does not take a rocket scientist to know times are tight for a lot of people in north Brooklyn. Even the Mister and I are feeling the pinch. But we have the presence of mind to know we are lucky. Very, VERY lucky. We have a roof over our heads; we have food (even if it means eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches went rent time comes around). We have it good. Much better than a lot of our neighbors and friends. Which brings me to the purpose of this post.
Jennifer Aull— one of the co-pastors of the Greenpoint Reformed Church and overall great gal— turns 21 tomorrow! Just kidding: she’s turning 22. Anyhoo: her birthday is tomorrow and her wish (via Facebook) is as follows:
I believe that the Greenpoint Church food pantry changes lives. I know it has changed mine. Please make a donation in honor of my birthday.
I can personally attest that the Greenpoint Food Pantry has changed lives. What’s more I want the compassionate ladies of the Greenpoint Reformed Church to continue serving our neediest! Give what you can Greenpointers. Every little bit counts!*
Miss Heather
*Those of you who are reading and possibly wondering (mom and dad— I shit you not my parents read this— I do not come from a broken home— I come from a more or less functional and intact family) what I want for my third fifth** wedding anniversary (which will come to pass on Halloween) it is this: donate to the Greenpoint Food Pantry. You can do so by clicking here.
**Yeah, I’m in trouble.
LAST GASP: The Shit Never Sleeps?
As if my props to this, the Garden Spot’s most prominent landmark, via Time Out New York was not enough now I have learned our very own Shit Tits have made their way onto the silver screen. In an Oliver Stone film, no less! Jen (one of the fabulously cool co-pastors of the Greenpoint Reformed Church) writes:
Hi Heather,
You might already know about this, but today Ann and I went and saw the new Wall Street movie and the shit tits play a major role in the film. Of course they aren’t playing the role of a poop processing center. Instead they have been casted as a green energy research facility. Creative casting.
Methinks I might just have to see this (or would that be “them?”) on the big screen!
Miss Heather
P.S.: On a related note, the Greenpoint Reformed Church’s food pantry and soup kitchen needs your help now more than ever. You can make a donation by clicking here and learn how you can volunteer by clicking here.
FRIDAY: Supper For A Good Cause
It’s been a long time— too long— since I have a nod to the wonderful Co-Pastors who operate the Greenpoint Reformed Church. Not only do these lovely ladies give succor to our neediest—- but they’re really cool to boot! This post is an attempt to catch up. Here it goes.
This upcoming Friday, September 17, they will be conducting a fund-raising supper for their food pantry and soup kitchen.
The (tentative) menu (whose produce/foodstuffs has been donated from local farms/businesses!) is as follows:
- Soup—Sunchoke with crispy brussel sprouts
- Salad—Vegetarian Nicoise: Lettuce, string beans, potatoes, boiled eggs, etc…
- Main Course—Creamy Polenta, fire roasted tomato ragout, grilled veggies, garlicky greens
- Dessert—(the most tentative menu item!) Sugared crepes, carmelized apples, Van Leeuwen ice cream (!)
A cocktail hour will be conducted in the backyard from 6:30 – 8:30 as well. Among the offerings are:
vodka with mint syrup and raspberries and bourbon with ginger juice and lemon—as well as wine–$8 suggested donation per drink.
This includes “snacks”. Check it out!
