New York Shitty Day Starter: From Greenpoint’s Historic District

My brother in law is currently paying our fair city a visit. Wishing to show him one of the nicer parts of Greenpoint I took him to Milton Street. We gazed and pointed. We ooohed and we ahhhed. Then we saw this.

coozetown

A piece of viral advertising— in a “Historic District”, no less. Is it not the point of preservation to prevent this kind of crap blighting one’s enjoyment of what few blocks of lovely row houses, brownstones and churches my neighborhood has to offer? If it isn’t, it should be.

I never really thought much about Courteney Cox (because there is not much to consider). Until now. Every time I see one of these signs (and I am, increasingly— they are proliferating) her mug puts me in a blind rage. I hope the brain trust behind this campaign will take this into consideration before erecting any more of these signs. It is probably not the reaction they are looking for.

UPDATE, September 22, 2009: My good friend at Musings on ‘point has a few things to say about the Cougar Town viral advertising experience. Aside from being an eyesore, they would also appear to be illegal. MOP writes:

This is an “advertising sign” as defined by ZR 12-10 and such signs can only be located in commercial zoning districts C6-5, C6-7, C7 and C8. Not only was this picture taken in a residential district, but you’d be hard pressed to find any of the aforementioned zoning districts anywhere in Greenpoint or Willliamsburg.

The offending signs are everywhere and starting to grate; I demand satisfaction.

I want them removed. What’s more, I want to know how much compensation the homeowners who allowed these signs to be posted on their property received. Did they pay taxes on this revenue? Did the agency behind this campaign know that erecting said signs in a residential neighborhood is illegal? Do they care? I, too, demand satisfaction!

New York Shitty Day Ender: Brownfield Farms?

On Labor Day I posted an item entitled (appropriately enough) Happy Labor Day From New York Shitty. Among the scenic points of interest I pointed out to my fellow Greenpointers was Bushwick Inlet…

and this dead rat. This was several weeks ago. Not only is the dead rat box still there, but more garbage has accumulated and the weeds have overgrown the sidewalk to a point where pedestrians are taking their chances on the bike lane nowadays.

The owner of this property, Motiva, also has holdings on Paidge Avenue. For some inexplicable reason those facilities there are better maintained.

Perhaps my buddy, fellow Greenpointer and New York Shitty contributor, Rowan, offers an explanation: they’re trying to go green on brownfield.

RowanCORN1nys

They’re starting a farm. Rowan writes (in regards to the above photograph):

Yes. A lone corn plant.

CORNrowanNYS

I couldn’t believe it. Is this really corn?

Hell if I know. Can anyone out there verify if discarded Marlboro containers and dead rats make good compost in a brownfield? Is this a halfhearted attempt to restore some much needed greenery to The Garden Spot of the Universe? A foray into alternative fuel? Or simply a public nuisance?

THIS WEEKEND: Robot Monkey Chimpionship II

Remember this spring’s Robot Monkey Chimpionship between Greenpoint and Williamsburg? Well, if you don’t you can refresh your memory by clicking here. I attended and had a hell of a time. Therefore, I am pleased as punch to announce that this Saturday, September 26, starting at 4:00 p.m. the second chapter of the Robot Monkey saga will begin with…

FLIER

Tip to the wise: be sure to stick around for the end. The contestants get much more interesting after they have been drinking for awhile.

New York Shitty Day Ender: Saturday Night In Greenpoint

This nook— or would that be cranny— on Green Street has become a very popular place for our increasing homeless population to get a little al fresco shut-eye. Perhaps the Viridian could take him in? They have the space to share. Let’s put this nondo to good use!*

Miss Heather

*This week I had an epiphany regarding the multitude of half-completed/bankrupt apartment buildings in north Brooklyn. We, as citizens, should not be rewarding these chaps by bailing them out with our tax dollars with no strings attached, e.g.; if said properties do indeed turn a profit we’ll see no return on our investment. (Which is exactly what the HARP plan will do). We should convert them into for profit prisons and homeless shelters. Greenpoint has pretty much become one (of many) dumping grounds for Manhattan’s “undesirables”— why not make a few bucks off it? Beside, convicted felons *cough*  *Madoff* deserve scenic Manhattan views, a doorman, swimming pool and balconies too!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Happenings At The Greenpoint Hotel

September 19, 2009 ·

hotelTHUMBThose of you who were keeping an eye on Brownstoner yesterday probably noticed a post entitled “Seedy Greenpoint Hotel Changes Hands“. Yes, it would appear our favorite flophouse has exchanged hands (along with a few “adjoining parcels”). For those of you who are keeping count this is the third time this establishment has changed owners in ten years.

Naturally it didn’t take long for something to find its way to my inbox— and it isn’t pretty. Laura writes:

Hi Heather! According to a neighboring store owner, the Greenpoint Hotel is being taken over by another landlord. According to tenants, it’s posted in the Hotel lobby. They also claim that as tenants leave, the rest are being shifted to one side of the building. Why? When all the tenants are gone, it’s going to be some sort of rehab facility. We really need to find out if that’s true. If so, N. Greenpoint is F&%cked

So let me get this straight: they’re moving the residents of this hotel— a number of whom have substance abuse problems— to one part of the building so as to (presumably) start a rehab facility in the other?  This is diabolically clever. Not only has this property come with a built-in clientele base but if/when this (rumored) rehab facility opens their patients won’t have to go far to get a fix. It’s right across the hall! Genius!!!

If anyone has heard anything that affirms or refutes Laura’s tome please leave them via comments or send ’em to me via email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. Thanks!
