New York Shitty Day Ender: Scales Revisited
It was touch and go for a day or two but today I finally caught up with the brains behind the happenings at 199 Green Street: Kacy. She’s an incredibly nice lady and although her shop is still very much a work in progress (right now she is featuring cowls but plans to sell more apparel, such as shirts, in the near future), she plans to host a knitting workshop (all ages are welcome) Sunday, February 28, starting at 7:00 p.m. Check it out— or swing by and welcome her to the neighborhood!

Greenpoint Business Watch: What’s Up At 199 Green Street?
I have been asked this question many times. Today I have an answer. Sort of.
Regrettably this establishment was closed when I walked by (so I could not ask its proprietor/proprietress about their business) but it appears to be a clothing shop/craft space of some sort. Does anyone have the 411 about Scales? If so, please share via comments or email at:

UPDATE 10:20 p.m.; Here’s the 411 per one of 199 Green Street’s neighbors we’ll call V:
I live next door and have seen the comings and goings for some time. It appears to be a woman in her mid 20s with a sewing machine, an ironing board, a wooden chest, and not much else in there. Right now, as the sign says, she is making circle scarves (cowls) which you can see hanging in the window, I believe. I walked by the other day and the sign said “be back at 7:00, at soccer,” which was cute. It looks like it’s about a 150-200sqft storefront, behind those curtains, so there’s not a lot to miss.
For a while, it seemed she was living there, but that may have just been her setting up shop. At least now it’s curtains rather than the butcher paper that was up previously.
UPDATE, February 18, 2010: Thanks to my buddy Seth I have been put in touch with the owner of this establishment! Hopefully I will meet up with her tomorrow. More to come…

Greenpoint Street Seating Du Jour: Cat’s Cradle
Some of you might be wondering why I have entitled this sectional and mattress assemblage (from Green Street) “Cat’s Cradle”. The answer can be readily found to the left: they are located next to the only dumpster in Brooklyn— and perhaps the entire world— that both eulogizes and pays homage to Kurt Vonnegut.

New York Shitty Day Ender: A Street Fair on Manhattan Avenue?
Although this is (obviously) a ways off I wanted to bring it to your attention anyway: any and all who would like to see a street fair this summer should head to 1018 Manhattan Avenue (AKA: The Greenpoint Grocery) and sign the petition. The proposed date for the “Greenpoint Hispanic Festival” is August 8, 2010 and the location will be Manhattan Avenue between Green and Dupont Street. I for one would love to see this happen. If you do too head over to 1018 and grace this petition with your John Hancock!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: 189 Green Street, Revisited Once Again
S writes:
just wanted to let you know that the crazy lady w/ the ‘king of beers’ xmas tree-tower, now has a cardboard sign on her fire escape and all I can read is “Fuck You”…Â She’s taking it to a whole new level
Welcome home.
Fuck you.

P.S.: In as best as I can tell this sign reads “Don’t fool with me — The Chyssy Woman”.
Greenpoint Photos Du Jour: 189 Green Street Revisited
As you can see, the Christmas display at 189 Green Street is even more spectacular in day light.
In fact, I’d go so far to say they have a jump on this year’s tree!

189 green St. Fire escape. Check out the aluminum tree. Gives new meaning to Christmas cheer.
Needless to say I had to investigate this matter immediately. Here’s what I found.
I realize the above image is a bit lacking in terms of quality so I will describe it to you. It is a Christmas tree lovingly erected in the honor of the King of Kings. It is constructed of 12 ounce cans of Budweiser (the King of Beers) and topped with a bow. It is located at 189 Green Street; Greenpoint, Brooklyn U.S.A.: the County of Kings! As a very kindly chap across the street noted as I was taking the above photographs:
Pretty cool, eh? She even taped it so it would not fall over!
An opus as this deserves recognition. I don’t care if Christmas is last week’s news. This is Greenpoint Glory at its very finest!
189 Green Street, I salute you!*

*Chez Shitty is a Budweiser and Miller High Life household. Brooklyn Beer does not inhabit our fridge. The reasons for this are numerous, but I’ll tender two:
- The political leanings of Brooklyn Brewery’s owner, Steve Hindy. This gent is decidedly pro-Atlantic Yards.
- Most of “Brooklyn Beer” is not made in Brooklyn. It is made in Utica.
Mostly the first point.
