From The New York Shitty Inbox: Props & Bicycle Theft At The Viridian

A very nice chap (and Viridian resident), Michael, writes:

Hey Miss Heather,

Avid reader, first time tipper. First I gotta say I love the blog – really great stuff. Indispensable if you live in GP. And congrats on the NY Mag article!

I wanted to write you b/c my 2 bikes were stolen from the Viridian garage (110 Green Street) yesterday (I think). They were last seen on Thursday at 11:30pm and were gone this morning around noon. The 2 bikes were: 1) 1980’s Schwinn World Sport – blue frame with black handle bars, fixed and 2) 1980’s Windsor Carrera Sport – gray frame with red handlebars. I’m really bummed about them being stolen… Maybe you or one of your readers will see them around town. If you do please let me know! Thanks again and keep on rockin!

First off, thanks for the incredibly nice words Michael. They are greatly appreciated! You might be interested to know I will be featured on L Magazine’s web site this upcoming week— so keep an eye out! Otherwise, if anyone has seen a bicycle fitting either of the above descriptions please contact Michael via email at: michael (dot) auerbach (at) gmail (dot) com.

Thanks!

UPDATE, October 3, 2010: Michael has gotten one of his bikes back! He writes:

I got 1 back! Saw some dude with the Windsor on green. Said he found it on the end of Huron street and he gave I back to me! Still missing the Schwinn tho! I hope we can get it back!!!

Greenpoint Fashion Watch: Bex Rocks!

I’ve seen this woman around the neighborhood for some time and have long been intrigued by her sense of style. Today, dear readers, I finally had the time and wherewithal to ask if I could take her picture. She kindly agreed and as we were talking it ended up that we knew each other— in cyberspace that is! “Bex” is one of my flickr contacts! Some of you might be wondering what the deal is with the hoops. She is a hula instructor and had just completed giving a class.

Which brings me to this item (which I have blown up for better viewing). The silver and black number with appendages is called a “fire hoop”. A fire hoop is pretty much what it entails: you set these attachments on fire and shake your groove thing. The more adventurous among you might be interested to know this one is for sale. Bex’s asking price is a $100. Any and all interested parties should contact Bex via her Flickr mail. Good luck!

Yesterday yours truly took it easy. However, as the afternoon whiled on I found myself drawn (by virtue of the lovely weather) to go on a little walk. Follows are some highlights from my sojourn. Enjoy!

The Word On The Street: A Bike Theft Epidemic?

September 18, 2010 ·
Filed under: 11222, Criminal Activity, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic

This week I have heard complaints from no less than three people who have had their bicycles being stolen in the Garden Spot. Whether or not this is a coincidence (READ: I have by chance encountered more— and/or more vocal— people who have has their bikes stolen or if this is an indication of an uptick in petty theft) is anyone’s guess. In any case I feel compelled to write a couple things. Here they are.

1. The 94th Precinct registers bicycles (so in the event they are stolen they can traced via a serial number they will assign and engrave on said bike). This service is totally free and you can make an appointment by contacting Officer Moulterie (the woman spearheading this project) via telephone at (718) 349 – 3879. DO IT!

2. LOCK UP YOUR BICYCLES! One of the people I spoke to who had his bicycle stolen this week because he left it unattended (READ: unlocked) while he ducked into his apartment to get something. While by and large Greenpointers are honest, good folk that fact of the matter is some of our number are not. Be street smart and keep a careful eye on your personal property (be it a bicycle or otherwise).

3. I would advise each and every person who has had his (or her) bicycle stolen to bring this to the attention of the commanding officer of the 94th, Deputy Inspector Fulton, at the upcoming Community Council meeting (which is next week!)

Something Neat: What Do These Two Things Have In Common?

(Or: Meet Eddie)

This, a SRO (and formerly a home for the aged), at the intersection of Oak Street and Guernsey Street…

and this stretch of Green Street. The answer (as I discovered this week on the premises of the aforementioned SRO) is this!

It reads as follows:

H.C. Fischer Iron Foundry
234T324 Greene St. B.E.D.

For those of you who are not in the know before E.D. became a buzz phrase associated with “male enhancement” products it meant “Eastern District”: a moniker employed to describe the Greenpoint/Williamsburg area. So this manhole cover —which is found in the Garden Spot— was, in fact, made in the Garden Spot. Or to use the parlance of the day: Brooklyn Eastern District. Naturally I had to look into who this Fischer chap was (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle archives of course).  I couldn’t find anything for H.C. Fischer— but I did find something about a H.E. Fischer. Without further ado (and in nod to this week’s primary) here it is: an item from October 17, 1900 edition the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. Enjoy!

Another item of (macabre) interest I found is this. It dates from December 18, 1885. One word: YIKES!

To close this post on a more informational (and upbeat) note:

1. You can read more about Greenpoint’s former home for the aged (as bequested by Samuel J. Tilden!) by clicking here.
2.
Here are a few shots of the premises and my host: Eddie!

He muses:

When you sit out here at 5:00 a.m. with a cup of coffee you can hear at least sixteen different kinds of birds singing!

And of course Eddie’s on-again/off-again* companion…

Patrick! Eddie found him as a wee little kitten in an earth mover. He nursed him back to health.

Patrick loves squirrels. Or more accurately: killing them.

But Eddie told me that occasionally Eddie’s prey of choice have elected to fight back: one such varmint— in the heat of battle— ripped out part of Eddie’s throat! This set Eddie back $1,000 in veterinary bills.

They build ’em tough in Greenpoint!

Miss Heather

*As Eddie told me Patrick seems to sense when a vet visit is around the corner. Let’s just say this fetching feline is currently keeping his distance!

P.S.: This post goes out to my friend, Jen Blossom, who lost a very good friend today. Kali rests with (or would that be chases?) the angels now.

LOST IN NORTH BROOKLYN: A Pomeranian

No details are given but I found these fliers along Manhattan Avenue and parts of the north side while running errands today. If you have seen this winsome little one (or know of his or her whereabouts) please contact his/her “people” at the above-listed telephone number. Thanks!

This items comes from via the New York Shitty inbox via one of the inimitable (and fabulous) boys of Alter. Roy writes:

Hey Miss Heather,

Hope you are well. I wanted to a share with you that this Friday, Sept 10th is Fashion’s Night Out. A global outreach to get people excited about shopping produced by Vogue, NYC and the CFDA. Most of the shops on Franklin St are participating and we all have collaborated on promoting the night. I have attached the flyer for it and would love to see if you are interested in featuring it on your site. Each store will have different events going on. Some will have DJ’s, free giveaways, complimentary drinks, discounts etc. (Alter will also be selling the official FNO tee shirt as well as having a photo studio in the shop to shoot all customers who attend and of course champagne) Its going to be fun night on Franklin St. There will be an after party at Veronica People’s Bar as well!

This is the second year for this event and last year was great for all the shops that participated. Only 4 last year, this year 10!

Duly blogged! Show your local indie businesses a little love this upcoming Friday and check this out!
