Dear Miss Heather,
I hope that you are well and had a nice Thanksgiving. We are having our 2nd annual holiday window display competition next Saturday, December 14th from 1 to 4 pm. We hope you will mention it on your blog. If not, we totally understand.
We have asked high school art students to design holiday windows for 12 of our businesses and inviting the community to vote for their favorite.
To entice people to come to Grand Street we also have Santa walking around, free face painting and scavenger hunt for kids. We are also raffling off a $100 gift card for those who vote.
Below please find a little write up. I have attached our postcard for you, and this link to our website’s photo gallery shows a few samples from last year. We are very excited and cannot wait:
Due to last year’s successful event, the Grand Street BID has organized its 2nd annual window display competition. This year four schools—the Green School, The High School for Enterprise, Business and Technology, Progress High School, and the High School for Architecture and Design—are designing holiday windows for 12 businesses on Grand Street between Lorimer and Humboldt Streets in East Williamsburg.
The students will install the designs on Friday, December 13th, a day before the competition; and on Saturday, December 14th the community is invited to vote for their favorite window and be entered to win $100. The winning design students will also win a gift certificate to a local art store.
There will be free face painting at Café Chillo: 702 Grand Street; kids’ scavenger hunt and Santa on Grand Street as well as lots of specials and discounts.
The event this year is bigger than last, which had two schools and eight windows.
The goal is to promote our businesses by involving the community and showcasing students’ talents.
Thank you so much for your consideration, and I hope to see you on Grand Street.
Gladly posted— and thanks Artineh!

On December 4th I wrote (in this post regarding the Big BK Toy Drive):
…What if I cannot attend tomorrow’s event?
You ask? NO PROBLEM! There are a number of toy drop-off locations where you can make a donation (which are being accepted through December 16th!). Follows are a few:
- Any East River Ferry
- Brooklyn General Barber: 144 Bedford Avenue Brooklyn, New York 11211
- St. Nick’s Alliance: 11 Catherine Street Brooklyn, New York 11211
- The Grand Street Business Improvement District (whose head honcha, Artineh Havan, has not only been wonderful in terms of getting the word out, but has something very special lined up this holiday season— more about that in another post!): 246 Graham Avenue Brooklyn, New York 11206…
Now without further ado here it is!
Ms. Havan writes:
Dear Miss Heather,
As previously mentioned, we are so excited about our holiday event this year…For the first time, we have asked local art students to design window displays for eight of our businesses. We are inviting the community out on Thursday, December 13th from 6 to 8:30 pm for their debut: to walk around, enjoy refreshments, and vote for their favorite window.
For voting for the best window, everyone will be entered in a raffle to win great prizes. The best window will also win a prize. We will also have Santa and Carolers as well as a Holiday Scavenger Hunt.
I have attached our poster, postcard (both back and front) and e-flyer. Kindly mention it if you have the space.
Gladly! This sounds like some serious fun folks— so mark your calendars and check it out!
