Reader Question Du Jour: Casa Mon Amour

January 10, 2009 ·

After announcing earlier this week that Casa Mon Amour was going out of business I received the following question from a reader named Rowan:

…any idea what Beatrice will do next?

Well as it would happen a gentleman named Tony was kind enough to share the scoop with yours truly. I will in turn pass it along to you:

I just had a smoke with Beatrice from Casa Mon Amour. As you know the restaurant is closed down now. She wants to spread the word that she is selling anything and everything now and will be around all day Saturday (1/10) for a CMA indoor yard sale. Like I said on the post, a big bummer. Beatrice said that she will be having a few private parties for the immediate future but no plans for any further restaurant business.

Those of you who are interested in (what I would surmise will be) a sale of restaurant fixtures might want to brave the inclement weather and make your way down to Casa Mon Amour tomorrow, January 10th. I also have word that the restaurant itself is for sale and she has had at least one “nibble”.

In other restaurant related news…

What (somewhat) recently vacated restaurant space appears to not only have a taker also has an application for a liquor license pending with Community Board 1… along with a few summonses from the Department of Buildings? For the reveal click here.

Greenpoint Bar Watch: The Alligator Cometh

On December 16 yum1 wrote (in regards to this post):

According to Eater, L&F is about to reopen under yet another name. Free pizza with drinks (a la Alligator Lounge) this time around.

This does in fact appear the be the case. The Alligator Lounge is expanding into this space. It will be interesting to see how it fares in light of the crappy economy and the fact there are no less than eight bars along this strip (including The Production Lounge which is located on the same block). Then again, when a lot of folks are out of work and/or low on funds the offer of free pizza (as promised on the above-depicted, albeit illegible sign) may very well prove to be a draw.

P.S.: As of January 7, 2009 it is open.

Regrettably the opening for this has come and gone. However, I took a look-see this evening and I have to tell you: these photographs are pretty darned neat. By all means give this show a whirl. It is completely worth contemplating over a cocktail (or two)!

TOMORROW: Saying Goodbye To Casa Mon Amour

January 5, 2009 ·

As some of you might have noticed Casa Mon Amour has been shuttered since January 2nd. After a number of bureaucratic hurdles and tough financial times (of which anyone operating a business in Greenpoint can attest) Beatrice has decided to call it quits. Those of you who had the pleasure of knowing Beatrice (as I have) and wish to thank her for the laughter, good times and (what is by all accounts) the best sangria ever to grace the Garden Spot should swing by tomorrow, January 6th, and tender your kindest regards.

Goodbye, Beatrice. You will be missed!

I don’t know about you but there is NO WAY I am going outside today! However, I have more photographs (such as the above one I took en route to the post office*— oh joy!) to add to my collection of Greenpoint winter-time goodness, so keep an eye out for them… and STAY WARM!

*Who managed to misplace two packages of ours and where we had the pleasure of having some utterly clueless (intoxicated?) gentleman wave an envelope in our face and query us as the whether it had sufficient postage to mail. If you are wondering, the answer was yes… and no. The stamps he placed on it totalled out to 46 cents. But alas, one of them hard already been used. Dumbass.

If there’s one time Greenpoint really shines it is when it is has a nice dusting of snow. For this reason I am going to share with you some photographs I took of yesterday’s snowstorm. Enjoy!

Be sure to check out the neat pix Rowan5 took of Bushwick inlet as well. They can be found in the New York Shitty photo pool. They’re worth the point and click!

Tis The Season: Kicking It Off!

December 1, 2008 ·

It’s already beginning to look a lot like Christmas in and around the Garden Spot of the Universe. To this end I have decided to kick off my (hopefully) daily revue of Yuletide goodness from Greenpoint and beyond in grand style. In addition to featuring Christmas decor which graces homes I have decided to throw in some choice decorations from retail establishments. My reasons for doing so will become all too apparent later in this post. Enjoy!

This, my favorite Greenpoint feline from Kent Street, senses holiday spirit in the air!

Ever since this pharmacy (on Manhattan Avenue) featured a replica of the Empire State Building made of Fleet enema boxes back in 2002 I am always eager to see what they whip up.

While a bit of a disappointment (I mean, how could one honestly expect to top an edifice made of implements used to irrigate certain orifice?) this juxtaposition does have a certain charm.

However, if you want to get your sensuous Santa on make your way to the 7 train without delay and head over to Jackson Heights.

Why not get things started with a few naughty MAD LIBS underneath the mistletoe? As you can see it is a best seller at this Duane Reade (located at 73-01 37th Avenue). Need stocking stuffers? No worries. Roosevelt Avenue has ’em!

Who wouldn’t be delighted to receive this lovely work of art on Christmas Day (or at the office party)? I know I would! Of course such occasions demand proper apparel.

I don’t think I would want this chap coming down my chimney. What in god’s name has he stuffed in his pants? A bear claw?

HO! HO! HO!

What does this naughty little Santa’s helper hang on her bush, you ask?

Cock rings, anal beads and Spanish fly! DUH.

So you’ve got your Mad Libs, stripper sculpture (and/or other life style accessories), you and yours are dressed up and the Christmas tree is festooned with anal beads of many colors. You’re pimped up and ready to ho down. Now what?

The wine, of course. Yes, this bottle says exactly what you think it does.

Quite a bit(ch), as a matter of fact.

This libation can be found right here in Greenpoint at none other than Dandy Wine.
