New York Shitty Day Ender: And The Winner Is…

January 25, 2010 ·
Filed under: 11211, Caption This, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn

The Mister and I have reviewed the entries and surprisingly enough quickly agreed on the winning entry. I had my cell phone handy lest we needed a tie breaker. No need. Before I proceed I’d like to take a moment for a couple of honorable mentions.

Miss Heather’s Choice:

Actually, the only irony here is that the person drinking this was actually old and English. — Walrus Taco

This one is headed in the right direction, but it doesn’t address “800”. Close, but no cigar.

Mister Heather’s Choice:

Olde English 800:  It’s gotten to that point. Time for help. — Em Two

We both laughed our asses off at this one but felt “Time for help” was a bit redundant. If you’re drinking Olde English 800 with a straw this is already apparent. No need to belabor the issue.

And now without further ado the winner:

Olde English 800: Suck it like a Slurpee, Crush it like a Motherfucker. — Em Two

Congratulations Em Two! I will be getting in touch with you regarding your prize in the next day or two. This week I present for your enjoyment this specimen from Greenpoint’s very own Bushwick Inlet!

There is something elegantly practical about this. Not only does the rubber band keep the bag secure, but it provides a good grip so as to resist slippage. Who wants to cry over spilled Courvoisier? What’s more, it is eerily reminiscent of something one would see on There, I Fixed It. I like it!

The deadline for captioning this bad boy is Monday, February 1, 2010 5:00 p.m. EST. I haven’t determined a prize yet but I’ll come up with something. Get cracking folks!

Greenpoint Photo Du Jour: We Do It All!

Yesterday I really needed a laugh and thanks to the Production Lounge (where the above sign is located) I got one. We’re not talking a paltry chuckle either. We’re talking bent-over-gasping-for-air fits of maniacal cackling. There a measure of truth in advertising at play here: gun fire, noise complaints, monthly strip parties with lap dances— and now Bar Mitzvahs and Sweet Sixteen Parties! The Production Lounge really does do it all!

My advice: if you decide to have little Timmy’s b’rith at this establishment it might be best to bundle up your bundle of joy in some Kevlar. And oh yeah, toting along a bottle or two of hand sanitizer may not be such a bad idea either.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Greenpoint Coffee House To Close?

Dave writes in an email entitled “Ombudswoman of Greenpoint”:

Perhaps you’ve blogged about this, perhaps not. Rumor has it that Greenpoint Coffee House will close at end of March!
THIS CAN”T HAPPEN!

I was just chatting with barista there and I said we need to start a petition, raise some funds, or contact NewYorkShitty, or both!!! so, I’m contacting you…

This place, IMHO, has the quintessential Greenpoint charm. A faded beauty with thinning veneer of nostalgia…
It has a comfort that other places don’t…

realistically, not sure what can be done. BUT…thought it worth telling this valuable observer of all things Greenpoint….

THANKS!

I heard rumblings about this back in September 2008. I was told the landlord refused to renew their lease— but they still had the better part of two years left on the current one. Sounds like this was more or less spot on. If anyone reading this has more information about what’s going on at 195 Franklin Street do share. Inquiring minds (and Greenpoint caffeine addicts) want to know!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Trivia For a Souper Cause

January 18, 2010 ·

A lot of people have been horrified by the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. Of all the people I know none more so than my friend, poet and Greenpoint fashion plate extraordinaire, Philip. As it would happen he hails from Haiti. He told me when he saw the church he in which he was baptized rendered to a pile of rubble he was devastated. Buildings can inevitably be replaced, human lives cannot. This is why I was incredibly happy to learn that the folks at the Greenpoint Reformed Church and t.b.d. have organized a benefit for Red Cross Haiti Relief.

Samara writes:

Dear Miss Heather,

Thank you for donating a photograph to the silent auction of the Souper Trivia fundraiser for the Greenpoint Soup Kitchen (I am now the happy owner of said photograph, as I bid on it and won it) and for including the event on newyorkshitty.com.

There will be another trivia night fundraiser @ t.b.d. on Thursday, January 28th @ 7:00; this time, all proceeds will go to the Red Cross’s Haiti Relief Fund.

The format will be the same: $5 a person to play, teams of up to 6, 5 categories of 10 questions each, plus a picture round. 1st, 2nd & 3rd place prizes are gift certificates to local Greenpoint establishments. Ann will be the MC. The only difference is that this time there will not be a raffle or silent auction.

Please come if you can. And we would be very grateful if you could include the event on newyorkshitty.com.

Duly posted, Samara— and thanks for the kind words. In closing I would like to make it known to all business owners reading this that you too can help by donating prizes. Here’s the deal: they need to in increments of six. After the first Souper Trivia Night concluded a problem arose: as prizes were given out to the winning teams it was discovered they could not be distributed evenly to the winners of six teams! Thus far The Brooklyn Kitchen has donated six gift certificates of $20 each as prizes for a winning team. I will be contributing six photographs to be given out as prizes as well.

Souper Trivia Night II
January 28, 2010 starting at 7:00 p.m.
t.b.d.
224 Franklin Street
Brooklyn, New York 11222

Any and all who are interested in learning more about this event or wish to donate prizes should contact Samara at:

Use your creativity and your heart: donate a prize. It’s for a very worthy cause.

UPDATE, January 26, 2010; There will also be a prize for most creative and/or compelling answer to a trivia question!

Greenpoint Recession Watch: Pencil Factory Lofts Gets Served

I have been queried by a number of people lately about the status of the Pencil Factory Lofts (as seen above). Some of you might remember this site has been troubled this year: among other things, work was stalled back in May and a new construction company was purportedly brought in to complete it. Well, long story made short, it would appear that work has halted once again. Exactly why, I do not know. When will it resume, you ask? That’s anyone’s guess. But taking into account what I found at their former sales office this afternoon I’d hazard to say the prognosis isn’t looking very good.

A Greenpoint Public Service Announcement: More About The Adonis Lounge

December 27, 2009 ·
Filed under: 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic

adonisloungeTHUMBSome of you might recall ten days ago I shared the good news about the Adonis Lounge. In this post I posited the following:

If the address of this establishment, 113 Franklin Street, sounds vaguely familiar that’s because it is the location of the Production Lounge. Perhaps they have decided to diversify from hip-hop to himbos?

Well, certain events have come to pass (which, it should be noted started after I noticed a number highly unusual search query hits for this site— “Greenpoint handjob” being by far the finest) and I am pleased to announce I have an answer to the aforementioned question: yes. In fact, it appears to be a monthly affair and has been going on since (at least) November.

going

Per GoingNYC:

Adonis Lounge is a Private Male strip club for Gay Men held once a month in The GreenPoint (!!! Ed. Note) area Of Brooklyn NY , It will feature some of the hottest male strippers around plus there will be a lap dance area and VIP room for ones enjoyment ! Men must be 21 and up to attend  and be on the list for this November 19 event ( past events will not count ) write (excised).

This just keeps getting curiouser and curiouser…
