LAST GASP: Greenpoint Degentrification Watch

Today I intended to call it an early night. I’ve been running around like crazy all week. I’m tired. Then the following found its way to my inbox tonight at 10:06 p.m. Man, oh Manischewitz

The owner of this Lexus Infinity (which has been unburdened of its wheels) writes:

Hello Miss Heather,

Thought you may find this a bit interesting… All four OEM wheels stolen from my vehicle on Kent Street between Manhattan Ave. and Franklin St. in Greenpoint. Pics taken today 3/18/10 at 6:50p
I have become acclimatized to the odd carbecque here and therebut this?!? In the Historic District no less?!? I know a number of people who live on Kent Street. They keep a very watchful eye over their block. For this reason I am both amazed and concerned that someone could pull off stealing four tires without getting caught. But I suppose that’s gentrification for you.

Otherwise— and quite frankly— I’m speechless.

Miss Heather

P.S.: I have been told these tires were MIA as of 4:30 a.m. Thursday morning. I guess some people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day differently than others.

Greenpoint Business Watch: A Blind Item

March 17, 2010 ·

This afternoon as I was walking down Franklin Street I bumped into a friend of mine. As it would happen this person is a local business owner and in this capacity hears a lot of neighborhood buzz. For starters, he/she told me a boutique is slated to open on Oak Street (who knew?). But what I found intriguing was the following, which constitutes today’s blind item:

What vacated storefront on Franklin Street is also slated to become a boutique?

The answer might interest and/or amuse you. For the reveal click here!

Greenpoint Videos Du Jour: Adoptable Cutie Cavalcade!

Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic

I don’t know about you but the weather today is— to put it nicely— a bit rough. Instead of staying home with a case of the rainy day blues I decided to head over to Dog Habitat and meet a few of their newest adoptable cuties. They definitely made me smile and I am certain you will too. Without further ado here they are!

First up, we have Sasha. She is an eight month old Staffordshire Terrier mix rescued from the Center for Animal Care and Control. She’s a bit shy but nonetheless very sweet. I’ll let Jay take it from here.

Next up we have Monkey. Not only is he too is a Staffie mix rescued from the Center For Animal Care and Control but he lives up to his name! It was very difficult to shoot a photograph of Monkey because he was more interested in giving puppy love than aping for the camera— as you’ll see!

For those of you who fancy furkids of the more diminutive variety I present for your Saturday afternoon entertainment this sweet pair of Chihuahua/Jack Russell terrier mixes: Milo (as seen above) and his more outgoing brother Hootie.

Last up, a little something for the cat lovers. A comely one year old chap named Westly. Not only is he very friendly, but he sports some, um, interesting assets.

Those of you who care to know more about the “markings” referenced in the previous video can click here for the reveal. Anyone who is interested in providing a loving home to any of these lovely (and loving) furkids should contact Dog Habitat via telephone at (347) 601-8678 or via email at: rescue (at) doghabitat (dot) org.

Greenpoint Lost & Found

February 27, 2010 ·
Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady

As I was knocking about the Garden Spot today I found two fliers regarding lost and found pets. I am going to pass them along here— along with a few notes.

I stumbled upon this flier for a found pup (Bichon Frise? Maltese?) on Noble between Franklin and Lorimer Street. No details are given other than he (or she) was found on Lorimer Street. If this is your dog or you know to whom he (she?) belongs please contact the 94th Precinct at the above-listed telephone number.

I found this flier at 87 Dobbin Street. Once again no details are given. However, if you have happened upon a kitten resembling the one depicted in the above photograph around the intersection of Dobbin Street and Norman Avenue, chances are pretty good it is this guy (or girl). I suppose it goes without saying— but I am going to say it anyway: if you have seen the above kitty or know of his/her whereabouts please call his (or her) people at the above telephone number. Thanks!

Nifty Consumer Item of The Day: Subway (He)art

February 13, 2010 ·
Filed under: New York City, Subway

When I saw this delightfully frivolous and fun item— a heart-shaped map of the New York City subway system— on the Subway Art Blog* yesterday it was love at first sight. So you can imagine my disappointment when I learned it is not available in the United States… yet. Today I was informed by the owner of Greenpoint’s very own Word Books (who saw them at the recent gift show at the Javits Center) that she will be selling them once they get a U.S. distributor. I can hardly wait!

Greenburg Slide Show Du Jour: Blizzard!

As promised, here is are some highlights of from my sojourn in the snow. It was nice to see kids (of all ages) out having fun. I regret to inform everyone no snow phalluses have been erected in McCarren Park— yet. But hope springs eternal and the day is still young. Enjoy!

And on that note, dear readers, I am off to take a nice HOT bath!
