I have received a number of questions about the above establishment. Most of them run more or less as follows:

Hi- I wanted to point out this new gym I passed over the weekend.  Is this the local gym scammer?  Not sure as I saw actual equipment in the place.  Wanted to call the new establishment to your attention, as you tend to know all things Greenpoint.

In light of what happened at Cutting Edge Fitness I too have been very curious about this establishment. Today I decided to swing by and see what gives.

Gym Source was on the scene.

And men were very busy at work. Including Quick Fitness’s General Manager and Personal Trainer, Michael Losardo. He was kind enough to talk to me for a few minutes. Follows is a general rundown of our conversation:

  1. Mr. Losardo’s former career was being a recruiter. He was unhappy so he made a career change. He is now a personal trainer and the General Manager of Quick Fitness.
  2. He has been queried by a number of people about his establishment. He understood they were understandably cautious given some of the scams that have come to pass in North Brooklyn.
  3. Quick Fitness is to some degree a joint venture between Mr. Losardo and the building’s owner (whose name eludes me at the moment). The latter has invested heavily in converting this formerly industrial space into a fitness center.

In other words, Quick Fitness (inasmuch as I can ascertain) 100% legit. In fact, a number of people have already signed up for memberships. Those of you who are wondering (and I am certain you are) the peeps at Quick Fitness, while offering one year memberships, understand a lot of people (in light of our uncertain job market) are not able or willing to make this kind of obligation. For this reason they are waiving membership fees and offer month by month memberships. In other words: there are no contracts to sign. The monthly fee to join Quick Fitness is pretty reasonable too as well: $65.00 a month. Other amenties this establishment will be offering is onsite day care Mondays – Fridays 1:00 -4:00 p.m., Yoga, Spinning, Kickboxing classes, “Mommy & Me” classes and much, much more.

Those of you who are interested in learning more about Quick Fitness should consult their web site. Oh yeah, they’re set to open June 1st!

I didn’t have my camera with me when I was out today, but I thought I’d give you a heads-up on something rather amusing.  If you take a stroll over to Eckford Street and Greenpoint Avenue, you’ll notice that the construction fence around the vacant lot on the southwest corner has been replaced by a nice chain link number.  You’ll also notice that this new fencing affords a superb view of two tall, yellow, black-tongued denizens of our fair neighborhood.
I nailed them to the inside of the construction fence about a year and a half ago, but moved out of the adjacent property shortly thereafter and figured that the next tenant had removed them.  Now that the fence is gone, I can see that my replacements were lazy, not all that handy, or blessed with a decent sense of humor.  In any event, I’m glad to see my pets looking healthy.

Naturally I headed down the aforementioned intersection without delay.

The creatures of which C wrote were not at all difficult to locate.

Genuine Greenpoint giraffes!

A big New York Shitty shout-out of gratitude goes out to C for tipping me off to this. It made my day! Well, after the Bushwick bunnies.

As All Hallow’s Eve draws closer Greenpoint keeps getting more and more ghoulish (like this goose I found on Noble Street). Follows are some highlights from my sojourn around the neighborhood today. Enjoy!

648 Humboldt Street didn’t disappoint. However, I am concerned about the absence of the demonic clowns. They’re my favorite (after the Humboldt Hurler). But we have thirteen days to go…

Every so often I like to create assignments for myself. This, my latest one, came the way they usually do: via a flight of fancy. One day I wondered to myself if Greenpoint, the Garden Spot of the Universe— and patron par excellence to the aluminum siding industry— sported a rainbow assortment of siding products. What you have just seen, dear readers, is the result of one month’s worth of research. There is only one conclusion that can be drawn from the copious amount photographic evidence/data I have collected: yes!

New York Shitty PSA: Cat Killer On The Loose?

…Too many cats keep getting shot in this neighborhood. It is punishable by law.

This is not the first time I have such fliers in this area (Greenpoint Avenue between Eckford and McGuinness Boulevard) and I doubt it will be the last. If anyone reading this has a feline companion please keep him or her indoors! To everyone else: if you see anyone mistreating an animal— ANY ANIMAL— please report them to the ASPCA and/or the police department STAT.

Reader Comment Of The Week

heroinYes I know it’s only Tuesday but I seriously doubt (hope? pray?) Ihave to moderate a comment of this caliber for the next five days. After all, It’s not every day you:

  • ask the police what you can do about drug activity in your apartment building only to be told it is “a tenant landlord matter”
  • have a friend of your landlady’s son, an alleged drug dealer, die in the basement of your apartment building…
  • and there his body remained for over 12 hours

Then again this is the 94th Precinct we’re talking about. Nothing— no matter how crass— surprises me anymore. Even so, I have to confess this is one very special story. Rebecca11222 writes (in regards to this post):

Hi, Laura – My 2 cents as to who to also contact at this point: The NYC Parks Department.  In McCarren and McGolrick Parks there is a Manager on site.  I can say that the fellow at McCarren is very helpful.

I guess the question to have answered is: do they have a Manager on site at the new park?  Find out the name & what his/her hours are.  My bet is that weekend availability is patchwork. Report the incident and ask what they advise if you are in that situation again.

My concern is the threats of violence (albeit alcohol-fueled) with which you & your family were met.  I’m sorry that happened and when calling the 94th, I’ve found to place the emphasis on behavior that they can either get arrests out of or at least big $.  Like “driving while intoxicated” or ” behaving violently around children”  You’d think that a nice steep fine for littering would be incentive; but I guess not.

Personally, I live in a building w/ a junkie/ low-level drug-dealer in the basement.  He is the landlady’s son.  People who fall asleep standing up around the nabe are his only friends.  I see deals going down around my apt building  (Calyer at Eckford) frequently.  All my neighbors (some of whom have lived in Greenpoint for over 50 years) have seen him make deals around the blocks and in front of the house.  Yet she is in denial about his habit and he manipulates her.  When we first moved in, we found used syringes an glass vials in the fireplace ashes.  The son had been living in our apt before we moved in. When we brought this to her attention, our landlady said “this is a drug-free house.”

My husband & I asked some 94th officers what we could do b/c people who do heroin or crack tend to steal or fall asleep w/ lit cigarettes (or become violent in the case of crack).  They said it was a landlord tenant dispute until “something” happened.

Well, early this Friday morning, one of the son’s “friends” died in the basement.  The landlady told me, “my son wanted to move the body & dump it somewhere else, but I said he couldn’t.” She attributed his desire to move said body to a desire to protect her rather than, oh, say, hide some evidence.  The body stayed there until about 8pm Friday & there was a cop posted outside the building.  I wonder if this will be enough of a “something” to warrant further police investigation or action.  Or maybe someone else has to die.

Btw: if anyone wants 2 awesome, quiet, responsible tenants, my husband & I are looking for a new place.

So there have you.
