New York Shitty Videos Du Jour: Open House

Yesterday afternoon my buddy from the Newtown Pentacle and I sojourned to St. Cecilia’s Auditorium for the Kosciuszko Bridge Project Open House. While hardly standing room only, the peeps behind the presentation were pleasantly surprised by the turn-out. I suspect word about the blue chip refreshments (which included coffee, tea, cream, milk, zero fat milk, water and soda; cookies and crackers with an assortment of cheese) might have had something to do with this. But who’s to say for certain?

In any case, I filmed the proceedings for your entertainment and edification. Mostly the latter. This material might strike many of you as being boring (for the most part, it is) but if you reside in this southern Greenpoint or western Queens you should view this footage. How this projects proceeds (or not) will effect our community for a long time to come.

INTRO: (self-explanatory)

PART I: The process/research leading up to this project & how the bridge will be constructed

PART II: Property acquisition & park space (including a kayak launch on Newtown Creek!)

PART III: A run-down of the four bridge types under consideration

PART IV: End of Presentation, the Q & A session begins

PART V: A Lombardy Street resident asks some very compelling questions

PART VI: An Apollo Street resident speaks and the meeting concludes

I suppose some of you are probably wondering which design I voted for. Here you go.

The rationale for my decision was (more or less) as follows:

1. I found it visually compelling and felt it juxtapose nicely with the Manhattan skyline.
2. This design leaves more open space under the bridge. Given how oppressive this area is currently I believe this to be a big plus.

3. It embraces/showcases the Shit Tits rather nicely!

Priorities, people!

East Williamsburg Abjectecture Du Jour: Presenting The Rapunzel Building

February 24, 2010 ·
Filed under: 11206, Abjectecture, East Williamsburg, East Williamsburg Brooklyn

This fulsome fortification hails from 36 Scholes Street. I have nicknamed it the Rapunzel building due to its rather medieval looking parapet and Juliette style balconies. While unfinished, one can envision a quartet of Rapunzels lowering their golden tresses to their respective princes even now. But what kind of princes would come calling to this edifice, you ask?

The kind who wield sharpie markers, that’s who!

Awww, now that’s just sweet! I can’t quit you either, 36 Scholes Street!

In closing, I did a little poking around the Department of Building’s Building Information System. I made a number of interesting (but hardly surprising) discoveries. Among them peeps behind this property owe several thousand dollars in fines for various and sundry offenses. Follows is the most intriguing:

Who knew the Department of Buildings had the authority to issue citations for illegal parking? I thought that was the stuff of the N.Y.P.D. You learn something new everyday in East Willie…

Today the guys at Curbed were kind enough to give me a shout-out regarding the monstrosity that is 94 Scholes Street. A guest commenter was kind enough to point out (and I quote):

miss heather is one of the most hideous thigns i have seen lolololololol

I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In any case, my (ostensibly hideous) person doesn’t hold a candle compared to the crap being built in North Brooklyn on any given day. There’s only five feet of me. What’s more, I do not sport balconies. But I digress.

I found of specific interest that Philip Toscano Architects had a hand in this atrocity — albeit for very “geeky” reasons. You see, his office (which you can here in its resplendent pink stuccoed glory) is the site of a former Bonanno family hang-out. It took me a while to pin down which one— but I did!

Which brings me to my retraction:

On June 17, 2008 I wrote (in a post entitled “Greenpoint Photo Du Jour: Hanging Out“):

To see what this corner (at the intersection of Huron Street and Manhattan Avenue) looked like back in the 1970’s click here.

Well, I was wrong. The Motion Lounge is— or more accurately was— located at 420 Graham Avenue. Here is what it looked like back in Sonny Black’s day.

Pretty neat, eh?

UPDATE, 7:12 p.m.: I have received a very interesting pair of emails from a person we’ll call “S”. He/she writes:

Saw the link you had to that great pic of the motion lounge (now the be-stuccoed offices of toscano architect).  I live on the block and like to chat with some of the old timers about what used to happen in the area, and there’s more to that corner building.  in between being bonano hangout the motion lounge and an office, it was known for a while as the san giuseppe social club and was a hangout for some genovese family associates.  there was a mob related murder during a card game there in 1994.  in a very strange trial and turn of events, the owner of (a local bakery) was convicted of this murder at his second trial in 2007, while the other defendant walked away (the actual hitman had turned state’s evidence).  a judge overturned (said baker’s) conviction last year, and he’s a free man now.

oh, I forgot to mention his co-defendant! He owns a local pizzeria.

here are some articles about the case:
