New York Shitty Photos Du Jour: Bushwick Place Carbeque

Today yours truly finally felt well enough to take a walk. A five hour walk to be precise. To this end I bundled up, braved the brisk weather and marched bravely forward to see the best (and worst) that north Brooklyn has to offer.

It was at Bushwick Place and Boerum Street that I stumbled upon this hot mess of a carbeque.

Here’s another view.

Toasty!

While not on par with the India Street carbeque (which is yours truly’s all time favorite) or this one from Ellery Street (which sported clown paraphenalia in the trunk) this specimen is compelling in its own way. Why, you ask? Very simple: while this ride sports no tires whatsoever on its axels…

they were rather abundant nonetheless.

Fascinating.

Street Trash, Revisited

In light of the recent controversy regarding the residential conversion of the Greenpoint Hospital and the fact that Halloween is just around the corner I cannot help but make mention— once again— of a very special cinematic feature which inhabits yours truly’s DVD library. I speak of none other than Street Trash. What is this Street Trash, you ask? I’ll let IMdb clue you in:

When a liquor store owner finds a case of “Viper” in his cellar, he decides to sell it to the local hobos at one dollar a bottle, unaware of its true properties. The drinks causes its consumers to melt, very messily. Two homeless lads find themselves up against the effects of the toxic brew, as well as going head to head with “Bronson” a Vietnam vet with sociopathic tendencies, and the owner of the junkyard they live in.

The premise is interesting enough. It is even more one takes into consideration that this film sports a scene from the Greenpoint Hospital (more specifically, its Outpatient Annex) and the Garden Spot itself is prominently featured! Those of you who want a glimpse as to what our ‘hood (and the surrounding area— including Maspeth) looked like circa 1897, Street Trash delivers. My favorite scene is arguably the shoplifting scene which was shot in none other than the Met Food across the street from McGolrick Park. Unfortunately I have decided it is a little too risque (READ: “language”) to post here. The trailer will have to suffice.

It would appear that someone has been thoughtful enough to upload this entire film onto YouTube for your (free!) viewing pleasure. WARNING/CAVEATS:

  1. This movie is most decidedly NOT safe for work.
  2. Some of the material in said film is quite offensive. So if you have delicate sensibilities do NOT watch it. Seriously.

Enjoy!

Quicklink: Inside The Greenpoint Hospital

I was supposed to swing by this very place today. Regrettably I had to decide against doing so: I simply did (and do) not feel up to it. Luckily my colleague over at Nathan Kensinger Photography has enabled me to go there without even having to leave my jammies. Do give this blog post (from which the image to the left hails) a read. It’s seriously good stuff!

East Williamsburg Photos Du Jour: Zeitgeist

I could tell something was afoot when I passed a youth wearing a t-shirt which read as follows:

FUCK YOU

FUCK YOU

FUCK YOU

FUCK YOU

FUCK YOU

FUCK YOU

FUCK YOU

Have a nice day.

If there’s one thing I have observed about East Williamsburg over the years it is its citizens do not mince words. This is a large reason why I find this neighborhood so endearing: they say whatever is on their mind. CASES IN POINT:

I encounter this pup on Lorimer Street. When I inquired of his “person” as to what his friend’s name was he replied:

Give me your phone number.

To wit I replied:

If he has a cell phone— and I trust he does— I’ll be more than happy to program it into his phone since I have opposable thumbs.

It took a moment, but he got the joke and ‘fessed up that this— his— dog has no name. He asked me to give him one— and I did: Amos. As I have mentioned fairly recently, I grew up with a bulldog with just this name as a kid. That was a good enough reason as any so it stands: Amos it is!

Montrose Avenue

While no explanation is given methinks what happened here is pretty clear: this person had his (her?) bike stolen. I can only wonder what Janice Sadik Khan would think of this. But I digress. As I continued down the street— pondering the fact this act of theft came to pass a mere five minute walk from the 90th Precinct all the while— I stumbled upon this.

Wow, they really do have a problem here.

I thought to myself. And this.

Yup.

And last— but hardly least— this find from Graham Avenue

I will readily admit my command of Spanish (or pretty much anything for that matter) was not up to par today— it was one of those days. We all have them. But the message gets across nonetheless.

I love a happy ending! *sigh*
