New York Shitty Day Ender: A Street Fair on Manhattan Avenue?

Although this is (obviously) a ways off I wanted to bring it to your attention anyway: any and all who would like to see a street fair this summer should head to 1018 Manhattan Avenue (AKA: The Greenpoint Grocery) and sign the petition. The proposed date for the “Greenpoint Hispanic Festival” is August 8, 2010 and the location will be Manhattan Avenue between Green and Dupont Street. I for one would love to see this happen. If you do too head over to 1018 and grace this petition with your John Hancock!

You know the budget cuts at MTA are beginning to hurt when you see something like this (which hails from Manhattan Avenue and Dupont Street). Then again, I suppose a Sharpie marker and address labels filched from the United States Postal Service are more cost effective than printing out a new schedule.

When I saw this downright elegant specimen on Dupont Street today I simply could not resist sharing it for all to enjoy. A new decade will upon us soon enough and you know what they say:

Out with the old and in with the new!

Nonetheless, I cannot shake the suspicion that Ikea had a hand in this forlorn love seat’s ignominious end.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at my favorite house on Dupont Street!

Reader Question/Contribution Du Jour: A Wreck On Dupont?

Margot writes (in an email entitled “very scary looking smashup on Dupont”):

right now between manh. and mcguin. lots of uniforms, firetrucks, and one absolutely demolished looking car. i dont know how fast youd have to be going to end up looking like that. no idea what happened or whom it  happened to. sorry, no photos.

1

Well, as it would happen my buddy Laura (who took all photographs gracing this post) was on the scene and has the scoop.

3

And what a scoop it is.

She writes:

…I’m sorry that these are not the clearest pictures. I’m still getting used to the camera settings. I also didn’t reset the time on the photo. These photos were taken more like 4:35  and on. At 4:30 there were a few large crashes that rumbled the building so much that I felt it on the fifth floor. I heard that the vehicle got stuck in reverse from the second parking spot on the block, onto the sidewalk and past a few buildings. Thank God, few people were out front and were able to get out of the way. There’s usually loads of people hanging out there. Apparently, the vehicle first banged that grey car which banged the yellow car… As you can see the vehicle ended up on the stoop a few doors down. It took police over a half hour to respond. They wouldn’t even bother looking under the vehicle to see if there was anyone under it. A neighbor from the building got a flashlight and looked. Folks were worried and making sure everyone was accounted for. The vehicle took out the wrought iron recycling fence in front of my building. After many, many phone calls from many people, the fire department also arrived at 5:18.
They’re still working downstairs.

Even on a dreary day such as this I cannot but help but smile when I walk by this house (which is located in Dupont Street). It just keeps getting better and better!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Helicopters?

Shashi writes:

know anything about those incessant helicopters over greenpoint from 6-7:30 in the morning? traffic copters? how does one complain about them?

Truth be told Shashi, I am not 100% clear on what your recourse is. However if you are writing in reference to the helicopters flying around the waterfront this morning methinks I can give you answer. I have it on very good intelligence that our very own Mayor was in the far north Garden Spot conducting some kind of dog and pony show which we will undoubtedly be subjected to in the near future. I am certain the message will (more or less) be:

Everything’s just great!

Had our fearless leader bothered to actually step out where the common peasants live he would quickly ascertain things most decidedly are not.

Looks like the natives are getting restless.

swastika

I hate Greenpoint Nazis.

Some of my colleagues amplifiers in the print media might have noticed I have given no indication whatsoever as to where either of the previous items are to be found. You can rest assured they are in Greenpoint and the lack of naming their specific locations was no oversight on my part. If you are going to earn your livelihood plagiarizing my work I’m going to make good and damned sure to make you work for it.

Now that I have undoubtedly sent a pack of hack reporters scurrying around the Garden Spot looking for Nazi lamp posts*, do you have any advice, dear readers as to how Shashi should handle her noise problem? My educated guess is she needs to call 311 and file a complaint with the Department of Environmental Protection.

Miss Heather

*Oh yeah— if think you’re being clever by referencing the comment Tony left on this post:

This is much better than the swastikas I’ve been noticing on lamp post bases lately… just saw another today on Nassau @ Russell.

You’re not. As of 3:00 this afternoon there were no swastikas whatsoever to be found at this location. My guess is (given the police presence I saw there) they had been made note of and removed. Happy hunting!

This menagerie (which is located just off of Franklin Street) just keeps getting better. Note the addition of stuffed animals and Christmas lights to the tree truck. Very nice.

*Yes, I know it is after 1:00 p.m. After celebrating two friend’s birthdays this weekend (Saturday and Sunday respectively) and the Mister’s being tomorrow I have been a little busy.
