More ESCOS Fun In Greenpoint

February 23, 2009 ·

I recently received an email from my buddy down at Concerned Citizens of Greenwood Heights. It would appear that IDT Energy is no longer the only ESCOS game in town. On February 20, 2009 he wrote:

7:45pm, 3 folks were canvasing the block saying ‘ Hi, we’re from the power company.”

This ESCOS was less “deceptive” due to the fact that they had hats and jackets with the logo on it, but they did not identify them as an ESCOS. Add U.S. Energy Savings Corp to the list.

I told them to get off the block or we’ll call the cops…initially they were “nicer” than IDT Energy and said “good night.” When I pressed them further, they got nasty.

Response was “go ahead, we have dealt with that before.” (and a few profanities).

After I yelled at them at every house they hit after ours, and more of “what we’re doing is regulated by the New York State” (only partially true) and “we deal with the cops all the time,” they left the last third of the block. On to the rest of the neighborhood, I guess.

Argh! Another ESCOS doing deceptive tactics! Here’s the ESCOS

On a related note, yesterday afternoon as I was running errands around the Garden Spot I made an interesting discovery. As a result I have some good news and some bad news to relay.

getonboard

Let’s start with the bad news first: not content to let IDT Energy have all the fun in our fair burgh, someone has posted fliers for another ESCOS entity called Ambit Energy along Driggs Avenue. Now comes the good news…

ambitflier

they’re hiring! Those of you who have been laid off (and have the moral flexibility required for this kind of work) should give “Mr. Licko” (I’m not kidding— this really is his name) a ring STAT.

Tell him Miss Heather sent you!

Greenpoint Gets A Little More Caffeinated

Although I did not have the time to check out this establishment yesterday (I was in a rush to get to the new and improved Cup Of Joe’s* to order a blueberry pie for the Mister) I wanted my fellow Greenpointers to know the space formerly occupied by Brooklynski has— at long last— a new tenant: Lucky Shot Espresso. I suspect I speak for many when I say this establishment (Cup of Joe’s and Boneshakers) are much needed additions to this seriously under-serviced section of Greenpoint.

If anyone reading this post has given Lucky Shot a shot and would like to share his/her experience please do so in the comments. I would love to hear what you have to say! Thanks.

THIS WEEKEND: The Brooklyn Record Riot

Although I am not a vinyl enthusiast myself the fact of the matter is I know a great many folks who are. Bearing this in mind I wanted to pass along  that the Third Annual Brooklyn Record Riot will be going down this upcoming Sunday, February 15, at The Warsaw right here in Greenpoint. Here’s the 411 per their press release:

Hey kids, the Brooklyn Record Riot is less than 96 hours away and the buzz is still growing mysteriously…this may our best show yet! BRR #3 features a number of new dealers (hey, I’ve never heard of them either but they promise great things), along with old stalwarts and local heroes. Plus we are now offering the DOLLAR ROOM, the area that also houses the bar (oh ok, have a beer while digging). Everything in this room is a buck, records and CDs, full-length albums and 12″ singles. Phast Phreddie leads a stellar group of DJs (identities unknown, tunes classic), and the Warsaw is cooking and cooking getting ready for this kielbasa and pierogi-fest. Of course the drinks will be flowing and the vibe steamy. Records of all genres and price-range will be offered. Hip families will be strolling around. There are always a few fanatics who make a crazy scene. Hours are from noon to 8pm and admission is three dollars (total lunatics can pay twenty dollars from 10am to noon)…

Early admission (10:00 a.m.) will set you back $20.00. Otherwise regular admission (from noon until 8:00 p.m.) is a measly three bucks! For more details point and click your way over to Iris Records.

While you’re in the area why not check Greenpoint’s very own Permanent Records, Eat Records and scrounge around for hidden treasure at The Thing— at two bucks a disk, how can you lose?

TOMORROW: A Few Things For Cat Lovers

Tomorrow Empty Cages Collective will be having an adoption event at NYC Pet Supplies in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Their finest cats and kittens of all sizes rescued from the streets of New York City are promised to be in attendance, so why not swing by and say hi? As I have written before, all of ECC’s cats and kittens have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, and tested for feline leukemia and FIV. There is a $75.00 adoption fee and all adoptions require an approved application. You can get a sneak peek of what awaits you tomorrow by pointing and clicking your way over to Empty Cages Petfinder page.

Back here in Greenpoint the ASPCA’s mobile clinic will be offering cheap/free spay and neutering at Petland Discounts starting at 7:00 a.m. As the flier clearly states this is purely a first come, first served affair. My advice: get there EARLY.

Last up, I have been woefully remiss about passing along these wonderful works of art available at District Dog. My favorite is the “Vomitron Series”. However, there are also plenty of offerings for all you dog lovers out there. Best of all is the price; they’re a mere $25.00 a pop! Check ’em out.

This choice bit of bicycle basket goodness hails from Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg. There really isn’t much more I can say. This arrangement pretty much speaks for itself. Although the empty (?) can of Pabst Blue Ribbon is a nice touch.

Miss Heather

P.S.: I am slowly— very slowly— uploading more bicycle basket goodies to my pet project: Shit In Bicycle Baskets. Thank you for your contributions and patience. Trust me, it’ll be worth it! Can you say used diapers, astroturf and golf clubs? Uh-huh!
