Greenpoint Photo Du Jour: Koi
This bit of much needed tranquility hails from Nassau Avenue which, as many of you are all too aware, is experiencing a great deal of upheaval lately due to construction. Yours truly got a taste of it yesterday at the intersection of Russell Street and Nassau Avenue. This is where a motorist, apparently unaware of the stop sign and a fellow directing traffic decided to proceed through the intersection and damned near hit yours truly in the process. The traffic monitor had this to say about this fellow’s intransigence:
Fucking idiot!
To wit, I clarified:
I beg to differ. Methinks fucking asshole is more apropos.
I look at it this way: having to reside or operate a business in the midst of this mayhem is bad. Having to preside over it— especially in 90+ degree weather— is probably worse. This post is for you, Mr. Traffic Monitor.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Nassau Avenue Reconstruction Community Meeting!
This comes courtesy of our Community Board ‘s Transportation Chair, Karen Nieves. She writes:
Please mark your calendar!!! Nassau Avenue Reconstruction Community Meeting is set for Monday, April 23rd 6:30pm at the Lutheran Church on Russell Street.
I have word a flyer will be distributed shortly. When I receive one I will pass it along here. In the meantime, those of you who have concerns and/or issues arising from this project (For example: having port–o-let stationed next to the front door of your residence which turns over and disperses its “contents” on your front yard.*) take note!

From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part II: This Weekly Construction Bulletin
For those of you who want to know where the action is going to be this week (regarding construction on Nassau Avenue) I present this— their latest bulletin!
Greenpoint Photo du Jour: Nassau Avenue
An unintended consequence of Nassau Avenue reconstruction as spotted this weekend: an ad hoc skate park! I’m glad to see the powers that be have seen fit to install pylons. They were needed— badly! As for the wisdom of skating on this stretch, well, that’s still open to question…
From The New York Shitty Inbox: And Now An Announcement From the Department of Design & Construction
A great deal of the content of this site of late has been dedicated to the reconstruction of Nassau Avenue. This is because is because a number of people are confused and/or concerned about it (I have literally had people stop me on the street and ask me what is going on. No kidding.) and/or are very unhappy. Therefore I feel compelled to share the latest information as sent from the DDC’s Office of Community Outreach & Notification Office today, the Ides of March (via an anonymous tipster).
I have taken the liberty of highlighting what I find to be the most interesting passage of this tome:
on/about
New York Shitty Analysis: the Department of Design & Construction appears to be employing what is commonly known as “CYA”. For those of you who are not in the know as to what this acronym means you can get enlightened by clicking here.
To be continued… (no doubt)
New York Shitty Day Starter: Whoops
The reconstruction of Nassau Avenue has thus far proven to be fraught with challenges. I for one do not find this encouraging given the actual work has not even commenced yet. The latest issue to be brought to my attention is the copious amount of signage which has been installed directing motorists to alternative thoroughfares. While certainly laudable, the powers-that-be seem to have overlooked that in so doing they are precluding pedestrians from actually using our city’s sidewalks. Which brings me to the above item (as spied by Sherry Wasserman). She writes:
Check out the new traffic sign on Diamond and Norman, which amusingly takes up more than half the sidewalk.
I certainly hope no one who happens to have mobility issues (READ: requires the assistance of a wheel chair or scooter to go about his/her daily life) resides on this block. Given the number of senior citizens in the Garden Spot this is highly likely. Conversely, this might prove to be an interesting deterrent for the increasing number of individuals who see fit to walk our community’s sidewalk while texting.
To be continued…?
From The New York Shitty Inbox: Changes…
A person we’ll call “D” writes:
Hi! Have you seen the detour alerts by the b48 bus stops? It wasn’t able to snap a picture this morning, but it looks like they will be repaving Nassau Ave and detouring the b48 to Norman Ave from March 12- Fall 2012 – yikes!
Have you heard any details about this plan? thanks!
This project has been in the works for some time. In fact I attended a presentation regarding it some time ago. However, I wanted the most up-to-date information and to this end asked our the Transportation Chair, a very dedicated lady named Karen Nieves, for the more information. She delivered. The following material will (hopefully) clear up any confusing regarding:
- The scope of the work is being done.
- Why it is being done.
- Who is doing said work. And most importantly of all…
- Who to complain to!
Without further ado here we go!
NOTE: a number of my fellow citizen have voiced interest in a hearing being conducted so as to gain a better understanding of this project and voice their concerns. If and/or when one is scheduled I will post the details here. In the meantime I hope this was helpful, D!
