Spotted At Barge Park: A Royal Flush

No, make that two royal flushes!

It looks like we have finally gotten our temporary crappers, Greenpointers!

What’s more they’re actually clean! Will the wonders ever cease?

Miss Heather

P.S.: I have also word from Miss Mousey Brown two port-o-lets have been placed by the handball courts at McCarren Park. Click here and see ’em for yourself! On a related note, Monday, July 26, at 4:00 p.m. Parks Moms will be having a walk-through at McCarren Park. What’s the purpose, you ask? Here’s the 411 per the email I received:

THE IDEA IS TO WALK THE WHOLE PARK, POINT OUT, AND LIST THINGS THAT NEED FIXING/IMPROVEMENT (both short and long term) AND  DETERMINE WHAT IS NEEDED FROM OSA/PARKS/THE COMMUNITY/PARKS GROUPS TO GET THESE THINGS DONE. This meeting has a practical, get-things-done and work-together intent. Right now we will try to especially focus on “the “low hanging fruit” as Kate Z. so succinctly put it- things that can realistically get done now to improve McCarren!

WE WANT TO MAKE A “QUICK” WALK-THROUGH AND THEN FOLLOW UP WITH (OPTIONAL) COFFEE/HAPPY HOUR AT LOKAL FOR ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION/NETWORKING OR JUST PLAIN RELAXING.

Can someone please help me understand what in yahweh’s name this thing is that appeared overnight near the Newtown Barge Playground?

I suspect what you stumbled upon is a work of art by Specter! A few months ago he installed a fairly similar sculpture under the BQE.

LAST GASP: Presenting Newtown Barge Park Dot Com

This item was brought to my attention by Laura Hofmann, one of the founders of Barge Park Pals, the community watch dog/advocacy group for this park. She writes:

Is it common for concert organizers to set up a website for a “one time gig”?

I honestly did not know what to say. So I looked up the owner of this site instead.

So much for keeping it local.

Miss Heather

P.S.: I would be remiss if I didn’t point out this corker from Open Space Alliance North Brooklyn’s own web site:

Thanks to the efforts of the Newtown Creek Monitoring Committee (NCMC) and Barge Park Pals, a parkhouse with comfort station will be built in Greenpoint Playground. The small triangular playground is bounded by Franklin Street, Commercial Street and Dupont Street and is adjacent to the Newtown Barge Playground which is the only active park space in North Greenpoint (and yet Ms. Thayer et. al. saw fit to commandeer part of it for a concert. — Ed. Note.). The playground is heavily used and the comfort station is a long needed amenity.

So let me get this straight: it “is heavily used” and yet, Ms. Thayer, our Parks Administrator and Executive Director of OSA, told a reporter from the Williamsburg Greenpoint News + Arts this same park was (and I quote)  “underutilized”?

So which one is it, Ms. Thayer? Or by “underutilized” do you mean by those willing to pay $12.00 to enjoy a park their tax dollars are already (ostensibly) paying for?

Remember the post I wrote this weekend about 37 Commercial Street possibly being the site of a film shoot? This afternoon I received another inquiry about it from a reader we’ll call Christo (who took the above photograph). He writes:

Water feed. Building site? Movie set?

Most decidedly the latter! On a lark (and wishing to put the speculation to rest once and for all) I popped over to the Department of Buildings web site. Here’s what I found.

Yes folks it would appear the rumors are in fact true. HBO will filming what I would presume to be the upcoming miniseries Boardwalk Empire right here in Greenpoint. What’s more they will be building a boardwalk. Perhaps we should entrust these folks with building the manifold number of other “waterfront spaces” we have been promised? I’d wager they’ll get ’em knocked out faster than our city will!

One of the things I really like about getting reader inquiries (other than getting a better sense of what you find of interest and/or concern in the community as a whole) is it frequently serves to remind to write about something that I had otherwise forgotten about. In the case of today’s post  this is the above lot, which is located on Commercial Street just west of Franklin. Sean writes:

Hey,

Noticed your latest piece about 65 Commercial St.  Not sure if this is related, but lately I’ve noticed construction materials and tents arriving to the giant vacant lot between this spot and the baseball/basketball park at the very end of the street.  I saw a guy posted in there a couple wknds ago, but he had no idea what the stuff was for, he was just told to guard it.

I thought you could work your magic and find out a little more.  I’m dreaming one day this will be a park, but not optimistic.

All I had to do in the way of “magic”  to answer Sean’s question is locate a very compelling email buried in my inbox. It is written by a woman named Nika and read as follows:

Hi Miss Heather! Just thought you’d be curious to know that apparently that esteemed group is going to be in our hood. Scorsese is working on a series called Boardwalk Empire for HBO that the entire internet is calling the next Sopranos. It’s set in 1920s Atlantic City, and a nice lackey man working pre-production for the show told me they’re building a 300-foot replica of the old Atlantic City boardwalk on Franklin and Commercial. I haven’t seen any evidence of it yet, but I’m keeping my eyes peeled. Can’t even think of what exactly is out there right now. Nothing, right? Scorsese is directing the pilot, Wahlberg is producing, Buscemi is starring (along with Michael Pitt and some other folks). I have a few links to more info on tumblr… Anywhos, thanks! Love yr blog.

So there have you. Not only does it appear that something downright cool is afoot in our own backyard, but we also have a New York Shitty first: a reader question answered by an serendipitously well-timed email from another reader. Sometimes you gotta love the Internet!
