Greenpoint Photos Du Jour: An Ode To Ash

This evening while running errands I caught my favorite bodega cat, Ash, in a rather compromising position.

However, Ash is a good sport about these things provided she gets rubbins. She knows I am a trusty provider too. They always know.

As I was lavishing attention upon her, one girl appeared at the door. Naturally Ash, being not just a loss prevention expert but also the ambassador of this establishment, obliged her.

Then two girls appeared.

Then three.

Ash then proceeded to demonstrate her skillz on the nearby Wall of Beer. Much to her peril, as it proved.

Those two packs of beer at far right almost toppled over. I caught them. This sent her youngest admirer into pealing fits of laughter. I did not just save Ash’s dignity, but I probably saved an aficionado of Zywiec and Lomza from opening a can of beer and having it spray in his face. That shit is for DRINKING. Two counts of dignity, saved.

But enough about me. Or beer.

This post is for you, Ash. The joy you give patrons of this establishment, children foremost among them, even melts the cockles of my heart. I’m sure the parents of the aforementioned children would concur, despite the exasperation of having to collect their them from partaking of your charms (which happened tonight). Ash, you are a loved, cherished member of the community.

Just keep away from the Wall of Beer, okay?

Mini Mart 1 nys

Mini Mart 2 nys

This magnificent beast’s place of enjoyment is the Mini Mart at 711 Manhattan Avenue. As you can see she opted to spend this lovely day in the shade watching the world go by. And, as I learned, I too was being watched. Noticing my interest in this comely cat a few fellows decided to give her head rubs and yours truly a little art direction. More specifically: they wanted me to shoot a photo of her from this angle.

By Request

We all agreed this one did not quite work.

She stopped being cute.

One of my collaborators noted. To wit I replied:

Of course she stopped being cute. She’s a cat. If you want cuteness on demand ask a dog.

Urban Fur: The Best Bodega Cat In Brooklyn, R.I.P.

notes

Last night the Mister and yours truly were walking down Lorimer Street. As we approached Meeker Avenue, I excitedly told him we were about to pass the bodega that the fittingly-named furkid, Tank, called his place of work and play.  You can undoubtedly understand my sadness, gentle readers, when I happened upon the above memorial. Rest in peace, big boy, you are and will continue to be missed.

RIP

It is with a heavy heart I relay that one of Manhattan Avenue’s most beloved citizens is no longer with us. As a woman I saw crying upon reading the above heartfelt eulogy clearly attests: she is missed by many.

ROAR

H/T: to Greenpointers for breaking this distressing news.

Urban Fur: Meet The Iron Lady

This afternoon/evening yours truly went on a photo walk with a frequent contributor of my photo pool: Carnade. Knowing my affection for Mexican culinary items we decided to check out Sunset Park. He played tour guide. Where he went, I followed. One of the stops we made was at the above bodega: Sam’s Grocery. It is, as I learned, a very curious place. For starters I met Sam: he is Lebanese. For those of you playing along at home (and to make it perfectly clear) we are in a bodega which sells Mexican groceries whose (very nice) proprietor hails from the Middle East. Stuff such as this is why I love New York City. But it gets much more interesting, as you will see.

Meet Sam’s bodega cat in residence. Carnade inquired as to what this fetching feline’s name was.

Thatcher.

Sam replied. Carnade and I couldn’t believe what we just heard so we asked again.

Thatcher, you know after the British Prime Minister. It’s a nice name, yes?

Sam said.

Me (once I absorbed what I have just heard):

I guess it depends on one’s politics.

Then Carnade asked the $64,000 question:

Do you like Margaret Thatcher?

To wit Sam gave the coup de grace:

No, I hate her.

And then he proceeded to explain why. Inasmuch I could ascertain Sam’s dislike of Ms. Thatcher had something to do with Cyprus. Exactly why Sam elected to name this (very friendly) cat after the Iron Lady remains a mystery. Methinks it is probably better that way.

The Mister and I encountered this rather substantial dude at a bodega on Lorimer Street.

Per a woman exiting this establishment his name is Tank.

It suits him well.
