A lady named Chris writes:

Hi Miss Heather,
Love your blog! Read it all the time and I feel that it is very funny, yet a great service to the community so Thank You for doing it!

My question for today is: You highlight so many houses in the Pernt that are decked out for Halloween. I am now wondering if you have compiled a list of the top houses to hit for this big day? I tried searching on your site but didn’t have much luck. Maybe I am searching the wrong phrase? I tried “Halloween decorations”.

Any advice would be much appreciated and thanks again!

As it would happen I was out and about today documenting Greenpoint’s best ghoulish goodness. Before I proceed to the “winners” (so to speak) here is a slide show showcasing genuine Greenpoint Halloween goodness as spotted by yours truly. Enjoy!

And now onto my picks!

216 North Henry Street: While sporting a small front yard, they make excellent use of it!

This house on Beadel Street: I did not get the address. However, it packs a nice punch and crossing Vandervoort Avenue in order to view it is rather horrifying its own right!

Best Block: Without question this distinction goes to Hausman Street. Watch the following slide show and learn why!

And last— but hardly least— we have the usual suspects: 648 Humboldt Street and 97 Russell Street. I have to say Beverly (the lovely lady responsible for the latter) outdid herself this year. Mazel tov!

Other haunted houses worth a visit: 85 Calyer Street and 57 Franklin Street. I hope this was helpful, Chris. Have a very happy (and safe) Halloween Garden Spotters!

Sisters: Beadel Street Brooklyn

Chris Arnade (who took the above photograph) writes:

Beadel Street is a wonderfully odd place, a single residential block in an otherwise industrial area.

Cut off from the rest of north Greenpoint by the BQE its managed to maintain a strong community spirit, with well maintained homes, an active neighborhood patrol, and generally friendly people.

The unique zoning came from an attempt to find homes for returning WW II veterans. Now it has the feel of a very small town surrounded by a much larger city.

(Or: The DOT Builds a Snow Fort!)

Tara on Beadel Street (who forwarded me the above photograph) writes:

Hi Miss Heather

I have been reading your blog for years and enjoy it. I live on beadel street and vandervoort ave. I don’t know if you have seen the huge pile of snow the city started dumping last Thursday on vandervoort which has caused a ton of honking and horrible traffic.  It’s now Monday and the ave is still shut down. The city has been loading garbage trucks filled with snow and dumping them in front of key span on vandervoort – the actual street itself for more than 5 days now. Why would the city do this?  Seems very unproductive.  Thought  you could solve this riddle.

Aside from basic municipal incompetence I honestly do not know what to say. But then again, it was on Vandervoort where I once saw this:

The above photograph was taken March 10, 2010. A month or so later the DOT saw fit to stick a street cone in it. I can assure you this was truly a vision.

My advice:

Update, 5:35 p.m.: unlike a lot of the Snowmageddon posts I have erected over the last week, I have some very good news to report! After receiving Tara’s email— but before I wrote this post— I advised her to contact a number of people. This list included Community Board 1’s Transportation Committee Chair, Karen Nieves. Tara writes:

I got in touch with Karen and she has been a great help today. We had called 311 on Thursday night as well… She came and took pictures of the snow pile.* I wish I had taken pictures on Thursday when it was a complete nightmare.

You rock, Karen!

It would appear that Waldemar has elected to nix the leopard print and fringe in favor of this melange of metallic goodness. Love it!
